Welcome to Steppler Farms Charolais Bull Sale March 11th, 2018. We are proud to offer more bulls than ever before with 80 outstandingyearlings and 15 two-year olds. Videos will be available on all thebulls on our website stepplerfarms.com. DLMS will again live streamthe bull sale.

This year’s sale on March 11th offers the largest selection of SparrowBraxton 519C herd bulls and showcases Braxton’s progeny. Braxton‘sfirst calf crop has more than exceeded our expectations and we believeBraxton represents the future of the Charolais breed! Braxton calvesare born consistently and easily with the highest level of vigour, traitswe value since we calve the majority of our 450 PB cows in January.As we watched these calves develop on pasture and in the feedlot, wewere impressed with their ability to grow and consistently perform.Braxton has also passed down his calm and easy nature as well as hissound feet and hair. Welcome to the 7th Annual StepplerFarms Bull Sale. The quality fromtop to bottom in the bull pen thisyear is very strong as you wouldexpect when you are taking the topof the crop from their over 400mother cows. This year we did thecatalogue in sire groups to make it

easier to see the consistency of type. This also allows those thatwant to put some ½ and ¾ brothers together for consistency intheir calf crop, an easier way to do it.

There are calving ease bulls that would work on any heifers tohigh performance bulls that will add big pay weight to any set ofcommercial calves. If you are a purebred breeder, you will alsofind bulls that will work in any program with some nicevariations in proven pedigrees and a great set of calves by greatbreeding Sparrows Braxton. They have sourced the best bullsavailable to complement their cowherd and spared no expense inpurchasing them.

If you need two-year old bulls, the quality here is also strong.These aren’t leftover bulls, but were held and developed slowlysince weaning to be bulls that will go out, work and last. Withover 40 years in the Charolais industry, they have worked hard asa family to build a great cowherd and a great reputation forsupplying a quality product that they stand behind. •All bulls sold through the 2018 bull sale are covered for all injury and death 6 months after the March 11th bull sale date with ZERO PREMIUM.•The buyer must contact Steppler Farms immediately to ensure coverage is within the 6 month warranty date.•All injured bulls become the property of Steppler Farms and a signed transferable registration paper must accompany the bull upon return.• If requested, injured bulls must be checked by a certified vet and this report shared with Steppler Farms. A vet report must be supplied if the bull dies.

•You will receive a full sales credit to be used in next year’s 2019 bull sale. Steppler Farms will only cover upto a $10,000 investment on a bull. •Bulls must be returned to Steppler Farms with a

satisfactory body condition score, with a signed transferable registration paper. Steppler Farms reserves the right to deduct from the sales credit for any bull returned with a body condition score lower than 3. Steppler Farms also assumes full possession of the returned bull.

The Herd Bull Guarantee is as follows:

After 1 breeding season – 75% sales credit of the originalsale price to be used in the next year’s sale

Year 2 – 50% sales credit of the original sale price to beused in the next year’s sale

Year 3 – 25% sales credit of the original sale price to beused in the next year’s sale

The majority of cattlemen’s programs have changed in thepast decade; with larger cattle herds and more calves bornon grass, calving assists must be minimal. Calving ease hasalways been an important consideration in our breedingprogram, so we have included a calving ease score to helpyou select your next herd sires. We provide in thecatalogue actual birthweights, and birthweight and calvingease EPDs. Before selecting your next sire, first evaluateyour cow herd and breeding program and know the typeof bulls that work for you. All bulls should sire calves withhigh levels of vigour at birth with the majority being bornunassisted as long as the bulls are used on therecommended cow type. I should note that we run severaldifferent types and ages of females, so we have used bullson all 4 levels of our calving ease score. By using ourcalving ease score, you get my best evaluation of a bull’scalving ability, so we have included a calving ease rankingto help you select your next herd sires.

Ask these questions when you evaluate your cow herd:

• What are my calving ease expectations and program goals?

• What does my cow herd look like?Breed, cow size, age of female, female genetics

• What are my management factors?Nutrition, exercise, time and interval of calving

• What are the outside influences?Weather

My criteria when I determine a bull’s calvingease score:Phenotype

How the bull is made. Structural soundness for calving ease. Smooth shouldered, smaller head, degree of bone, balance.

GestationDays between conception and birth date.

Maternal calving easePedigree – How predictable and consistent has the pedigree been for calving. Ex. Inconsistency can come from a larger birthweight grandmother.

Actual Birthweight and Calving EaseEach calf is weighed and a calving ease score given at time of birth.

Environment• Weather and nutrition of dam in the last 30 days of gestation. Calves’ birthweights and calving ease can be substantially different when comparing calves born the 1st of January to those born the 1st of March.• Outside factors affecting the calf’s actual data (Twin, placenta issues, dam injury etc.)• CCA EPD Data

BULL MANAGEMENT• Get your bull settled inBulls can sometimes have difficulties settling into a newenvironment. Different feed, management practices andclimate all contribute to new stressors for the bull. If youwant your bull to reach his highest breeding potential, itis important to get him a few weeks prior to breeding tomake this transition easier. If you don’t have an extra penor space, sometimes this just isn’t a reality and a box stallin the old barn doesn’t count as a pen for the bull.

• Evaluate breeding and re-evaluate his breeding soundness throughout the seasonWith yearlings and virgin two-year olds, we need tomake sure they can effectively breed a cow. Time andpatience is essential! If your breeding season happens ongrass, this evaluation becomes more difficult, but duediligence will aid in preventing lost time and open cows.Take the time to evaluate the bull throughout thebreeding season. If you suspect an issue, contact meimmediately. Back up bulls are always on hand.

• Pull your bull and provide proper nutrition accordinglyThe most important management practice for insuringyour bulls’ next year service is to pull them from thecows. All bulls will perform better and recondition moreefficiently if they are pulled and fed the proper nutritionto regain lost weight, grow and put on needed muscle forthe following year. Work with your nutritionist todevelop the right ration for your bulls. Having youryounger bulls away from your mature bulls is also wellworth the investment. Younger bulls can be built upmore effectively and the mature bulls won’t get overconditioned.

• Recheck semen and re-evaluate breeding soundness the following yearLeading up to the next breeding season, it is important torecheck semen and the bull’s ability to breed. Injuries anddamage from our cold winters can greatly affect thebull’s breeding potential.

We purchased Copenhagen 210Z from the Sparrow’s 2013 BullSale. Copenhagen’s depth of quarter, curly hair and hisexcellent foot led us to buy our first horned bull in a very longtime. Looking back, what an excellent decision to have made.Copenhagen’s first calves are all stamped with his depth ofquarter and full hair coat and they are as correct as they come.The Copenhagen daughters are simply awesome. Lots of milk and beautiful udders. Top 2% for Yearling Weight, 1% formilk and 1% for Total Maternal. Copenhagen’s mother andgrandmother are two of the best uddered females I have ever seen.

Production and efficiencies are very important on our farm. We have ashort, intensive breeding program. All females are AI bred forefficiencies and calculated matings. We try to get 95% of the cowsexposed in the first cycle with a 70- 75% conception rate. Correct,accurate nutrition, high quality semen, and time invested in heatdetection and inseminating are the keys to achieving this target. Steppler Farmsretains the right to have a vet chosen by Steppler Farms to evaluatebulls and has the right to take our vet’s opinion on said herd bullguarantee animals. Steppler Farms is not responsible for any morethan the original purchase price of the bull and does not guaranteethat semen collected from the bull will freeze. Steppler Farms willwork with all bull sale customers who use the Breeding warrantyand or Herd bull guarantee but with the understanding thatSteppler Farms makes final determination in any compensationlegal or otherwise to the buyer.Exception Guarantee: In the case where the animal is subjectedto any hormonal or surgical reproductive techniques after the sale,this guarantee shall be null and void. The seller is not responsiblefor damage caused by foreign bodies after the animal has beensold or for sickness not apparent at sale time. In no event shall theseller be responsible for more than the purchase price.Accidents: Although every precaution will be taken to protect thesafety and comfort of buyers, neither the sale manager, auctioneer,or sellers assume any responsibility and disclaim any liability, legalor otherwise, in the event of accident or loss of property.Sale Manager: By Livestock is only acting as a medium betweenthe buyer and seller and is not responsible for failure on the part ofeither party to live up to their obligations; or for the truth of anywarrantees or representations, expressed or implied. By Livestockassumes no obligation to enforce or collect monies betweenparties. By Livestock assumes no responsibility for any creditextended by the seller to the buyer.
