What is the Geraldine Scout Group:

The Geraldine Scout Group is an officially sanctioned group within Scouting New Zealand in the Upper South Island Region which is also Zone 47 South Canterbury which includes, Temuka, Pleasant Point, Waimate, Fairlie and Timaru groups. Geraldine has a long history of scouting back to as early as 1910 when the scouting movement was in its infancy in New Zealand.  The group was inactive in late 2002, but has since been revived and we’re getting stronger each term.  Although scouting in Geraldine has had its ups-and-downs over the years, we’re happy to say that we are on an “up” thanks to the leaders, committee and parents that have taken their time to meet the challenge and make it happen.

“With a focus on learning and FUN the section leaders are working to create programmes that challenge and stimulate”

AGM’s

Fundraising:

Disclaimer:

Group Joining Fee:

Group Subscription:

Discounts for youth member families.

The Geraldine Scout Group holds it Annual General Meeting in October or November.  All parents are requested to attend the meeting as it’s very important to gain feedback from parents and set a clear path for the Group to follow.  Your input and involvement makes it all possible.

Members and parents are asked to participate in fundraising. All funds raised will go to the Geraldine scouting group and our fundraising Committee will organise fundraising activities and require your support. We also seek grants to cover major capital items (eg. Tents and Camp gear). Sections also fundraise for specific events from time to time to cover costs of events such as Jamborees and camps.

Although we strive to create and run safe activities for all sections and leaders conduct risk assessments for activities, injury can occur.  The Group will not be held liable for lost or stolen property, or physical or other injuries.

Fees are set annually at our AGM.  These fees go to the treasury and cover the following:

Supplies for activities Booklets, badges, scarves etc. National, Area and District fees Insurances and Rent

A joining fee of $40 per child has been set, and is payable before an investiture can take place. It covers almost all initial administrative expenses including the provision of a scarf, woggle, record books, badges and certificates.

Our fees are $280 per year for youth members. This will cover national and running costs and the costs of materials used in delivering the Scout programme. The Treasurer will send you an invoice indicating total amount owing per child and payments can be made by cheque/cash at the BNZ Branch Geraldine or by Direct Credit.

We do offer discount on your fees: Leaders First child are free. (We always need more leaders) Discount is given if you help our group with fundraising this is a one off discount

of $80 per year. We also discount additional children. (Discount is $40 per year) We also offer discount if you clean our den. Please let your section leader know if

you are interested. This is in place to help assist families.

It’s great fun and rewarding!

Term fees are expected to be paid for each term!!

Volunteering:

Committee:

If group subscriptions are not paid within 3 weeks from the start of each term you can expect a phone call or visit from either the Group Chairperson or Group Leader to discuss the matter. Hardship cases will be considered by the Group Leader. Please contact the group leader if required as we are always happy to assist.   These fees are very important to the continuation of the Group and without them the Group would have to close down. Additional fees for special events or functions such as camps may also arise but are generally small.

All leaders and committee members are volunteers.  A growing group like Geraldine is always in need of leaders and committee volunteers.  We are currently looking for:

Section leaders (Keas, Cubs and Scouts) Committee members

To be a section leader, one must be warranted by Scouting New Zealand.  This will involve police clearance and training courses.  These are paid for by the Group.  If you are interested in becoming a section leader please let us know.  See the contacts area above. We are working with a skeleton committee and always require a few extra hands.    If you would like to bring your much-needed skills to the committee please let us know.  See the contacts area above. Along with the leaders and committee members, we always are in need of Adult Helpers.  Adult Helpers offer assistance by participating in activities.  All parents are welcome to attend meetings and get involved.  If you would like to offer your expertise as an Adult Helper, talk to a leader at the next meeting.

The committee works with the leaders to bring the activities and events to life.  The committee works with the section leaders to ensure that programmes and activities run smoothly, oversee the Group’s finances (treasury) and work to provide information to parents and the public about the Group’s activity.

Getting Started

Activity Wear

“All members are expected to be tidy and wear their activity wear to all

Meetings unless their leaders say otherwise”

It is necessary that a parent or guardian complete the Scouting New Zealand form for each child.   Normally a newcomer will attend 3 or 4 meetings before officially joining their pack (Cubs) or patrol (Scouts).  After this introduction period they will be invested and receive a:

Scarf Woggle (holds the scarf ends together around the neck) Certificate Booklet Badges or Patches

Cubs and Scouts become members by way of an investiture.  It is important for newcomers to know their Laws and Promises and to have a basic understanding of the behaviour rules.  The leaders will help new members with these points.

Applying interest badges to the official Scouting New Zealand uniform is not permitted.  We however feel that there is not much point in earning these badges unless you can show them off a bit.  As a work-around we have adopted Activity Wear, or in other words, an “unofficial uniform”.  For Cubs the activity wear consists of:

You can also buy uniform online at www.scoutingdirect.co.nz  by creditcard.

Sneakers should be worn to meetings unless the section leader specifies other footwear such as gum boots.
