Congratulations and a really warm welcome to the University of Hertfordshire. The next few months and years are going to be some of the most exciting you’ll ever have.

I graduated from Hertfordshire in 2012 and I can honestly say that university was the best time of my life. At first, three years seemed like a lifetime but trust me, it goes by so quickly. Make sure you make the most of every minute.

You might hit the odd speed bump along the way but don’t worry, there’s plenty of support available and all these things will help to define you and your time here.

Freshers’ Week is really important – and great fun. You’ll make new friends, get to grips with student life, familiarise yourself with the campus and find out about all the incredible support services that will get you through your degree. Enjoy it!

HELLO!

Page 5: Welcome to Herts 2015

4

There’s so much to do during Freshers’ Week and this little guide gives you a taster of the kind of things you can get involved with. Remember to keep checking online at go.herts.ac.uk/freshers to keep up to date with even more exciting new events.

AnthoniaPS: Social media is a great way to keep in touch and find out about all the latest goings on. I’ll be tweeting using the hashtag #ILOVEHERTS. To get you started, try these top recommendations too…

MAKE YOURSELF AT HOME

GETTING ONLINE “Getting online is really easy but if you have any problems there’s loads of help on hand over the first few weeks to make sure you get connected. Just call the Helpdesk on +44 (0)1707 284678 or pick up the phone at any information point on campus.” Rachel, Second Year Social Work student

To get started, you’ll need your personal university username and password. They’ll help you access all of the University’s online services, including StudyNet. Forgotten your password? Don’t panic! Just go to www.pss.herts.ac.uk.

There are three ways to connect to the internet and the University’s online services:

1. Log in to a University computer in one of the Learning Resources Centres (LRCs) with your University username and password.

OR

2. Connect wirelessly via UHWifi or the eduroam service. For set-up see StudyNet > Help & support > Computing, Wifi > Computers and wireless on-campus.

Page 7: Welcome to Herts 2015

6

OR

3. Plug into a University datapoint using your own network cable. Open your web browser to get the login screen, then select Student and enter your University username and password.

STUDYNET – YOUR UNIVERSITY ONLINEStudyNet is our innovative 24/7 study network. You can use it any time, anywhere, including back home or even in another country. It’s a great way to study

and communicate with the University, other students and staff, as well as access your lecture notes, search the library or get some student support.

When you’re registered on your course your StudyNet portal will be personalised with all the modules you’re studying, including timetables. www.studynet.herts.ac.uk

KNOWHOWFor a handy introduction to the University’s learning information and computing services, take a look at www.studynet.herts.ac.uk/go/knowhow. You’ll also find a help section at StudyNet > Help & support.

SUPPORTING YOU AND STAYING SAFE “The staff are really helpful and always do their utmost to make sure you have the best possible experience.”

Jason, First Year Business student

There are lots of support services at the University. So, whatever you’re looking for help with, there’s always someone with the advice and answers you need.

IN ACCOMMODATION...You’ll find Student Support Officers and Resident Assistants who are here to support you while you live on campus.

ON CAMPUS...You’ll find our Student Wellbeing team, which includes Disability Services, Counselling and the University’s Medical Centre all based in the Hutton Hub. We also offer faith based support through our Chaplaincy at the Key Centre on College Lane.

AT THE STUDENTS’ UNION ADVICE CENTRE…You can get independent and confidential advice and support on a whole range of topics.

AND IN YOUR ACADEMIC SCHOOL…You’ll find lots of support from your Programme Tutors and Lecturers.

We know that having fun is a big part of student life and we want you to have plenty of it – but please stay safe and know your limits. The University has a Code of Conduct that applies to all students. You can find it on notice boards or in your licence agreement and it’s a really good idea to check it out so you know where you stand.

Page 15: Welcome to Herts 2015

14

KEEPING YOU SAFE...The University has one of the safest campuses in the UK and is actually the safest in the East of England. In spite of this, incidents do occasionally occur so remember to be careful, always lock your door and travel home in groups.

Our security team is the first point of call in any emergency and is available twenty-four hours a day, all year round. We also work very closely with the police and have a dedicated University police team. They work to promote safety, both on and off campus. You can report any non-emergency incidents by calling 101 or, if it’s an emergency, please call 999.

If you lose anything on campus, first retrace your steps. You can also report it missing at The Oval, the Main Reception, the Students’ Union reception, the de Havilland Reception, the Gatehouse at de Havilland or the de Havilland Residential Services Office.

If you have any concerns, please contact security. From an internal line dial 1010, or from an external line dial 01707 281010. In an emergency, call 5555 from an internal line or 01707 285555 from an external line.

“While you’re studying here, Hatfield will become your home. I really enjoy being involved with the local community and do lots of volunteering.”

Jack, Third Year Geography student

OFF CAMPUS SUPPORTThere’s lots of support available if you’re living or moving off campus. We have a Community Liaison and Support Officer who can help you with any issues relating to living off campus, so feel free to get in touch at [email protected].

YOUR COMMUNITY, YOUR TOWNWhen you’re looking for off-campus accommodation, get some peace of mind by choosing an accredited landlord. The PAL (Partnership for Accredited Landlords) scheme aims to improve the standard of privately rented properties in the local area.

Page 19: Welcome to Herts 2015

18

“There’s so much to see and do nearby – it’s great when my friends come to visit because there’s always somewhere I can take them.”

Henna, First Year Marketing student

SHOPPINGON CAMPUSThere are convenience stores just inside the Forum on the College Lane Campus and next to the Residential Services office on the de Havilland Campus.

LOCAL SUPERMARKETSIf you’re stocking up, Hatfield also has plenty of supermarkets. There’s a Co-op on Bishops Rise and an Asda in the town centre, as well as an Aldi opposite The Galleria and a twenty-four-hour Tesco Extra just out of town.

THE GALLERIAYou can’t miss The Galleria. It’s slap bang in the middle of both campuses and because it’s an outlet mall you can grab some really good bargains. Inside, you’ll also find an Odeon cinema and lots of restaurants, including Nando’s, Harvester and McDonald’s.

There’s lots more going on in the local area, so have a look online at go.herts.ac.uk/freshers to find out more.
