Title I • is a federally funded program designed to

ensure all children have an opportunity to access a high quality education.

• The goal of this program is to close the achievement gap for all students.

• There are two types of Title I programs in Howard County: Targeted Assistance and Schoolwide. Talbott Springs is a Schoolwide Title I Program.

Involvement Plan• HCPSS Countywide policy and plan. During the school year, we would welcome any feedback related to our Title I Schoolwide program, these documents and events that are scheduled at the school.

• Offered to every child free of charge• Optional-children do not have to eat

breakfast!• Four menu items each day, three must

Lunch Information•Free/reduced lunch forms must be filled out yearly and turned in as soon as possible. http://www.hcpss.org/foodservice/free.shtml •Until families have gotten a letter from Food Services full price ($2.75) must be paid for lunch.

HEALTH AND NUTRITION POLICY

•Community snacks are provided by the families. Please purchase large/bulk size containers. •Ingredient labels must be on food items. PLEASE no nut/peanut products (check labels).•If your child has allergies you will need to provide daily snacks.•Birthday celebrations are to be food free. •Ill children need to be kept home until “fever • free” for 24 hours.

Recess•Outdoor recess daily- weather

permitting•For safety reasons, tennis shoes are

preferred.

•Dress your child for outdoor play.•There is no supervision for children

who are sick and cannot play outside.

READING IN KINDERGARTEN

•Reading instruction is based on students’ needsand grouping is flexible.•Focus is on reading behaviors (phonemic awareness, decoding, comprehension…).•Emergent skills are what is expected in kindergarten.•Guided reading groups for instruction and literacy centers for practice and reinforcement.•Practice of sight words at home is very important!!

WRITING IN KINDERGARTEN

Writing in kindergarten occurs in many different situations:•Reading groups•Journal writing•Writing table•Handwriting practice •Functional writingDifferent writing focuses for each quarter-Class stories -Book Reviews-ABC books -PoetryOur goal is to keep the child’s reading and writing at similar levels.

MATH IN KINDERGARTEN

•Common Core Curriculum is the base of math instruction with Math Investigations as a primary resource. •Our focus is developing math vocabulary, reasoning skills and problem solving skills through the eight Common Core Practices.•Math looks like:-Hands on activities-Safe environment to encourage participation-Movement and talking-Large and small group instruction-Differentiation to meet the needs of all learners More math information will be shared at our second Parent-Teacher conferences in February

•You get each report 4 times per year. •Comments are specific to the kindergarten skills that are being worked on in class.•Gives you information on academics and behavior.•Please sign and return your child’s white envelope. Please do not seal the envelope.

VOLUNTEERSWe would like to have volunteers in our

classrooms from 9:00-10:30 for reading and 12:00-1:00 for art class. Each classroom teacher would also like to have a “room parent” to help organize special events. Please let your child's teacher know if you are interested.

•Find your child’s TSES folder and take it home.•Leave your child’s labeled school supplies.•Make sure to complete the “How my child will get home from school” paper. If your child is a bus rider check our bus list information.•Tour the room (this is not a time to play!)•Meet the teacher and have your child's picture taken.•Take a shoe box and the directions for the first Family Project.

DON’T FORGET!!!•Bus Orientation begins promptly at 1:00 tomorrow!•Orientation for kindergarten students begins promptly at 1:30!
