Objective: This course allows you to develop mathematical concepts and strategies that can be used to solve a variety of real world and mathematics problems. As students become better problem solvers, they will gain confidence and truly value mathematics.

OBJECTIVE AND CONTENT OF COURSE(S) INTENSIVE MATH – 6TH GRADE

Objective: The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop mathematics skills and concepts through remedial instruction and practice. It does not take the place of the mathematics being taught in your other math class. Instead, the explanations and problems should help you remember the mathematics you already learned and help make your skills stronger.

Objective: The purpose of this course is to enable students to develop mathematics skills and concepts through remedial instruction and practice. Math 1:

• Tests 35%

• Quizzes 25%

• Study Island (computer problems)15%

• Classwork (Effort and participation) 15%

• Homework 10%

PINNACLE (GRADEBOOK)

Parents can access their child's grades by following these steps:

1. Go to www.gradebook.browardschools.com/PIV

2. The user name is the student's ID (This is not the student’s social security number)  Please check your child's schedule to find out the correct Student ID number.

3. The Pin Code is the child's date of birth – this will be typed as year, month, and day (four digits for year, two digits for month, and two digits for day) – no spaces, slashes, dashes, or commas) – for example, if the student’s birthday is February 5, 1992, it would be typed in as 19920205.

4. Choose the correct school  from the School drop down menu: Somerset Academy Middle.

STUDENT SUPPLIES

Students must come to class prepared at all times with the following:

• A 3-ring binder (1”-2”) with 5 Dividers/Tabs labeled : 1) Warm-ups, 2) Notes, 3) classwork 4) FCAT Practice 5) Data chats • Sharpened pencils• Expo Marker• Paper• Other materials as needed

HOMEWORK POLICY – (NO HW FOR INTENSIVE)

• Students can expect to have homework assigned for each class, (with written and/or Study Island).

• Late homework is accepted and will earn a grade of no more than 70%.

• Homework turned in on time will receive a grade of 100% - every problem attempted and completed showing adequate work and effort.

• 50% - at least half of the problems attempted and completed showing adequate work and effort.

• 0% - missing assignment, work is not shown, or attempted only a small fraction of the problems.

• Occasionally homework will be graded from 0% – 100% based on the correctness of a subset of the questions.

• Note: In either case, students will not receive credit unless their work steps are clearly shown. No Work=No Credit.

CALCULATOR POLICY

6th Grade/Math 1: Students will not be allowed to use a calculator for the entire year. This will help them to strengthen their mental math skills and prepare them for the FCAT. They cannot use a calculator on the 6th Grade FCAT.

8th Grade/Math 3: Students will be allowed to use a calculator all year. (4 function calculator.)

STUDY ISLAND / FCAT FOCUS

• Student will be using the Study Island/FCAT Focus computer program at home.

• The program is accessed via the internet.

• A link to Study Island / FCAT Focus will be provided in the near future.

• If a computer with internet access is not available at home, students can use the computer lab before or after school hours.

• Students must keep up with the units assigned! Late assignments will result in 70% grade.

CLASSROOM WISH LISTParents receive 1 volunteer hour for every $4.00 spent on materials for the classroom. If you are interested in this, please make sure you keep your receipts and turn them in with the materials and Mrs. Imperatori’s name and room #319 to the front office ..
