Welcome Message from the President of USG Eamon Mackle.

Dear Colleagues and FriendsIt is once more my pleasure to welcome you to the Hilton Hotel, Templepatrick for the Spring meeting ofthe Ulster Society of Gastroenterology. I hope and expect that you should find sufficient in the programmethat will be both interesting and educational.

This spring meeting we are testing a new format and the morning will have a focus on trainees with aseparate Symposium for SpRs in Gastroenterology and Surgery. Our own Dr Tony Tham kicks off thetrainee session with a talk on JETS/JAG. This is followed by Mrs Louisa Graham, Head of OrganisationalDevelopment at the Royal Preston Hospital. She is leading a session on something I still haven’t mastered:Difficult conversations and conflict management. As a mere surgeon one thinks enviously that perhaps SirLancelot Spratt had it easy within the hospital hierarchy in his day!

The main meeting is split into a Pancreatic Cyst Section and an IBD Section. The afternoon leads with DrMike Mitchell discussing the role of endoscopic ultrasound and whether it makes any difference. Dr EoinNapier will advise us on how to appropriately investigate pancreatic cysts. The session before coffee closeswith Mr Tom Diamond advising us when do we refer these patients to the HPB surgeons.

After coffee we are privileged to have Dr Sara Mc Cartney, Consultant Gastroenterologist, University CollegeLondon Hospitals talking on Transition in IBD Care- How should patients be managed?. This is followed byDr David Kevans, Consultant Gastroenterologist, St James’s Hospital, Dublin talking on Penetrating Intra-abdominal Complications of Crohns Disease – Medical versus Surgical management. After the two talks weplan to discuss a couple of difficult cases.

In April 2013 we held the BIG meeting in the Waterfront Hall. This was an ambitious meeting which I amdelighted to say was a great success. In October last year we entered in to discussions with the BSGregarding the possibility of another BIG meeting. I am pleased to announce that on 27th and 28th April2017 we will be holding the meeting in the Europa Hotel and would ask you to keep the dates free in yourdiaries.

A meeting like todays doesn’t happen without a lot of behind the scenes work. I am indebted to Dr PatrickAllen and Dr Jenny Addley for their dedication in planning this meeting. Most importantly I would like tothank our friends in the industry for their continued support and to thank Michael and Cora for all the hardwork they do in producing the programme and organizing the venue and meeting.

Lastly I would like to thank all the speakers and also you for attending and helping to make the meetinga success.

Eamon MacklePresident Ulster Society of Gastroenterology
