What is an informal letter?

• An informal letter is written in a friendly manner to someone you know

What is a formal letter?

• An informal letter is written in a professional manner to someone official or professional (e.g. Prime Minister)

Features of an informal letter

• Sender’s address

• The date

• Appropriate greeting

• Introduction

• Present tense

• Informal style (chatty, friendly…)

• Finish with a signature

Features of a formal letter

• Sender’s address in the top right corner

• Recipient’s address on the left hand side.

• Date

• Formal greeting (Sir/Madam if you don’t know the person you are writing to. Dear Mr/Mrs (Surname) if you do)

• An introduction

• Formal signature (Yours sincerely if you know them/Yours faithfully if you don’t)
