Dear CHIJ OLQP Family

We like to celebrate with our students, teachers and parents as we move towards the end of 2016. Working alongside with our dedicated teachers and the unwavering support from our parents,

we are encouraged by how our girls have achieved and done us proud, both academically and non-academically. We thank God for His guidance to our girls, who have indeed lived up to being a Leader, Learner and Lady!

Our holistic development programmes continue to grow strong, giving students opportunities to pick up essential skills, sound values and a positive attitude. Learning is emphasised both within and outside the classroom. We thank our students for their enthusiasm and care for one another.

Over the years our students have continued to prove their strength in Netball, Softball, English and Mother Tongue Languages Literary competitions, Art & Environment programmes, bringing glory to CHIJ Our Lady Queen of Peace. These would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of those who lead them. Thank you, teachers and coaches, for inspiring and guiding our young ladies to be sportswomen, debaters, artists and achievers in many areas. Our students also did impressively at the literary and SYF performing arts competitions. We are particularly thankful to all the parents who have been understanding, supportive and helpful with the preparations leading up to the competitions and performances.

We would like to thank our staff for their diligence, teamwork and dedication. Our worthy students are a reflection of all they have done. Our respective teachers-in-charge of the various CCAs deserve praise for their hard work and commitment in seeing our students through the training and competitions.

Many parents have volunteered their time in service and support to the school, assisting in conducting enriching programmes and activities for our girls. It is this selfless, communal attitude that enables us to focus on character development and at the same time, pursue new academic heights. We welcome more parents and former alumni to return to support and join OLQP as partners in nurturing our children into fine young ladies.

We are pleased to share and congratulate the following staff for being awarded the National Day Awards 2016:

• The Commendation Medal Mrs Clare Lewis

The CHIJ OLQP Sports and Environment Symposium took place on 26 May. The aim of the Symposium was to build character through sports, and ignite conversations on environmental awareness among our educators and stakeholders.

Through the theme “Character Building through Sports & Environment”, local and overseas invited speakers shared their insights, practices and experiences on how educators can build character in their school athletes, and promote an environment that is conducive for sports.

Our Guest-of-Honour, Dr Teo Ho Pin, Mayor of North West District and Member of Parliament for Bukit Panjang Constituency, launched our student-initiated school-led community project “Love Your Pet, Love Our Environment”. This year, our school partnered Chestnut NC in this project to heighten awareness among residents to join us in going green and advocating care for the environment.

Our Keynote Speakers, Professor Naofumi Masumoto and A/P Katsuya Otsu, are both experts in the field of character development through sports. They shared about the importance of environmental conservation in promoting healthy sports culture.

Other highlights of the day included concurrent sessions on the making of a Google 3D Glasses (a collaborative activity with Ricoh Pte Ltd), Eco-Craft (Hands-on Workshop conducted by teachers and PSG member), a baking lesson using crops grown in the garden, and a session on Global Citizens Care for the Environment. In addition, there was also an array of exhibitions displaying environmental projects from our West 8 cluster schools.

Cyber Wellness WeekOur Cyber Wellness Week (28 June to 1 July) saw engagement from all levels of students. Some of our Primary 4 students attended a Cyber Wellness Advocator Training Workshop. With their new roles as Cyber Wellness Ambassadors, they advocate proper netiquette and moderation in the use of online media platforms.

Invited speakers went into all classrooms to engage students in workshop sessions, including bookmark and comic designing competitions. The lessons learnt were reinforced with projects done by the Cyber Wellness Ambassadors. Excited students also spent their recesses at the experiential learning game booths during the Cyber Wellness Carnival.

The week concluded with an assembly programme. Students learnt about the three main personalities of Internet users – the Achiever, the Befriender and the Free Spirit. Students gleaned useful takeaways on being a responsible and tactful cyber user.
