Group Study Exchange
What Is Group Study Exchange?Group Study Exchange is an educational program of The Rotary Foundation wherein Rotary districts in different countries are paired to send and receive professional study groups of non-Rotarian team members and one Rotarian team leader to travel for four to six weeks, staying in the homes of Rotarians when possible. A traditional GSE team consists of four team members plus a Rotarian team leader.
Goals and ObjectivesThe Group Study Exchange program is a unique cultural and vocational exchange opportunity for young business and professional men and women in their initial years of professional life. The program is designed to develop professional and leadership skills among young adults so that they can address the needs of their communities and an increasingly global workplace. GSE offers Rotarians the opportunity to participate in sending, receiving, and sharing educational experiences of study teams that will enhance Rotary’s worldwide mission.

Note from the District Governor
A Texas “Benvenuti” to the GSE Team Members of District 2100:
On behalf of more than 2300 Rotarians, I welcome you to District 5910, the southeast part of Texas. We are excited that you are here and we promise to make your visit to our District an unforgettable experience.
Our part of Texas has many things to offer. We hope you will enjoy the program we have put together while you are here. Texas is a diverse state in many aspects and what you are going to see and experience will be a small sample of that diversity.
The Rotarians and Rotary Clubs in our District are looking forward to meeting with you. They will showcase the special industrial, economical, and cultural character of their area. What you will see and learn almost certainly will become an experience of a lifetime, professionally as well as personally.

At the District Conference at the end of April, you will meet our outbound GSE Team we are sending to your District May 4 – June 2. I am sure you will have a wonderful time together.
Texas is well known for its great hospitality. In fact, everything is said to be great in Texas. This certainly includes the friendships we will be offering to you; hopefully they will last for many years to come.

Team Leader – Alessandra Testa
Alessandra is 46 and lives in Reggio Calabria, a city in the deep south of Italy. A Rotarian for 4 years, this is her first assignment of responsibility. She has a PhD in “Human Cell Biology” with research interests in molecular genetics of hypertension and renal diseases, cardiovascular risk factors, gene expression studies and human cells cultures. She is employed as a researcher at the Italian National Research Council, where she is responsible for the laboratories of molecular genetics and clinical biochemistry of Reggio Calabria. She and her husband, Carmelo, are the parents of, Edoardo (20) and Federica (17). She enjoys travelling with her family and has visited every continent. They now particularly enjoy diving, and organize a trip to dive in new places each year. Their home of Reggio

Calabria, in the Strait of Messina opposite Sicily, offers some ot the most beautiful diving spots in the world. She also enjoys reading, attending the cinema, theater, and opera. She and her husband attend a Latin Dance School and go dancing when time allows.
She looks forward to visiting the “many elite research medical centers. . . located in Texas,” including the “Biosafety Level 4 (BSL-4) laboratory. . . at The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston.” She “would like to find out if the American writer, John Steinbeck, told the truth [when he said]: ‘Texas is a state of mind. Texas is an obsession. Above all, Texas is a nation in every sense of the word.”

Team Member – Valentina Ilardi
Valentina is 26. She lives in a small town near Naples called San Sebastiano al Vesuvio.Educated in biology, her work experience, conducted in the laboratories of Biochemical chemistry at the University of “Federico II” Naples, includes research about mutations in DNA that cause diseases like thalassemia. She now works in a laboratory of clinical pathology at the II University of Naples (SUN), and studies the genetic markers associated with cardiovascular disease risk factors, in order to find new preventions and/or treatments.
In Texas, she hopes to see how American researchers are studying cardiovascular disease, particularly two techniques that are very common in the US: microarray and DNA sequencing. She also hopes to establish a collaboration between universities related to

his research work in order to improve or learn new modern methodologies.
When not working, Valentina enjoys swimming, playing tennis, fit-boxing, shopping, and dancing. She also likes taking long walks, reading, and watching a good DVD.
She’s been a member of Rotaract Club Naples South West for 6 years, and is a former president and district office holder. Recently she has led an activity to raise funds to send to the city of Aquila, which had been damaged by earthquake. Now she is responsible for a project to place information panels written in braille language in museums and churches.
She says, “I cannot wait to come to Texas ... for sure there will be large green areas where you can spend some free time and relax yourself.”

Team Member – Alessia Campo
Alessia is 26 and works as a fashion designer and “cool hunter” (seeking out trends). She was born in the town of Locri (Reggio Calabria), grew up in Siderno, near Locri, but moved to Rome at 18 to study. She works in Rome but travels each week around Italy to visit exhibitions of clothing and textiles.
She attended secondary school in art in Siderno, the Fashion's Academy in Rome, and received a masters degree in "Design and textile materials” in Milan, with the founder of Italian fashion, Giorgio Correggiari.
After a number of fashion-related positions, since April 2011 she has managed the design department of her brand “Apparel Side,” a collection of clothing and accessories. In Texas she hopes to visit many fashion companies.

She has always dreamed of going to the USA, and hopes to find out more about our country and its local traditions.

Team Member – Nadia di Paola
Nadia, 34, lives in Naples in Southern Italy, not far from the university where she works. She has a Phd in Business Management and is a lecturer at Naples University “Federico II” in business management for the biotechnologies. Previously she was a lecturer in Organizational Behaviour at Basilicata University.
Her main research interests are in business strategies, supply chain management with particular focus in agri-food chains,and innovation management with particular reference to biotechnology businesses.
Her other work experience includes: project manager and scientific coordinator and analyst for Campania Region Agency for Logistics and Freight Transport Promotion (LOGICA) and for Ente Autonomo Volturno srl, the Campania Region holding for rail transport.

These two jobs required her to travel extensively all over Europe and Africa to carry out several cooperation projects. She also has worked as a consultant in research planning and monitoring for the CRdC GEAR (Campania Regional Competence Center in Genomics for Applied Research. She frequently teaches training courses in the field of management. She is now completely involved in innovation studies focusing on the one hand on the primary sector, in particular in the agri-food business, and on the other hand on biotechnology. She finds Texas particularly interesting because it’s a leader in each of those two fields.
She hopes to have a chance to interact with: Texas researchers in the two fields, to establish contacts, to exchange research methodology and to start a collaboration for future joint research works; and Texas professionals in the two businesses; and with managers belonging to some important innovative companies.
As a teenager she was a singer in the most important Neapolitan opera house, the San Carlo Theater, but due to the time demands of singing she stopped that career to study at the university.
She loves reading, traveling around the world, photography, and dancing.

Team Member – Renato Leone
Renato is 26 years of age and lives in Naples. He was educated in dentistry, and currently does research in dental prosthesis with the University "Federico II" of Naples. He enjoys nature and spending his free time outdoors; sports such as skiing, swimming, horse riding, and soccer; and good food. He is interested in the history and culture of other countries because his own city has been influenced by so many conquering civilizations (Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Aragonese, Spanish and French). He is particularly interested in American Western culture because he is the grandson of the film director Sergio Leone who made many Western movies. He works in a project to help homeless people in Naples together with his Rotary sponsors through the "Massimo Leone Foundation. "(www.fondazionemassimoleone.it)

and serving the sick in Lourdes, where he travels every year with the association UNITALSI.
Professionally, he is very interested in American techniques in dentistry, and hopes to establish a collaboration between universities related to his research work.
