ANSWERS: Progressivism Part 2

Part A: Short Answer: Instructions: Answer the questions below. 1. What was Prohibition and why did many women support the movement? Prohibition was the banning of alcohol. Many people felt a variety of social ills were impacted by alcohol. Women in particular supported the movement due to spouse abuse. Likewise, many women argued alcohol abuse caused men to fail to fulfill their roles as fathers or to hold steady jobs.

2. What were unions and how did they try to give power to the common worker? In this Progressive Era, the factory owners had massive power due to their wealth. Many workers were upset that they worked long hours for low pay. Therefore, the workers tried to use their strength in numbers to form unions. This way, they could strive for power as a group instead of merely as individuals. For instance, together, they could go on strike to demand better pay.

3. How did Henry Ford’s use of the assembly line change manufacturing forever? The assembly line method gave each person a specific job. This increased the amount of cars that could be made in one day. This was a quicker and more efficient way to make automobiles. This changed the way all manufactured products were made and increased the amount of products that could be produced for manufactured goods.
