OVERALL COMMENTS TO THE TEACHER

This English version is the final revised overall manual of the educational material developed by Erasmus+ BEPRESEL project implemented during the periode of 1st of October 2017 to the 30th of September 2019.

This final version is not identically to the draft versions, developed as background and to inspire the developing off the different national educational content to be implemented and tested during 2 test courses in each partner country.

The 8 test courses was implemented during the period of February-June 2019, by various methodologies and pedagogical approaches.

In the same way be believe it is important future users adapt this material to their national contexts, to your own methodology and especially to the specific profile of the senior learners to be educated.

There might be differences in how power points are to be illustrated in different countries and to different learner groups. You are free to change the pictures & illustrations used at the power points. In the same way you are of course free to change or supplement with national statistical figures, if they are aviable.

It is not the intention providing this material for this module , that you have to or shall use all the slides presented.

The intention is, you pick out the most relevant slides that, that fits

the time frame you have available for the presentation of this module and

match the specific profile of the seniors you are going to educate.

In the same way you are free to change the order of the powerpoints.

The text, the suggestions of »what could be said« in connection with the individual power point are for inspiration. As you will see, there are room at the different pages, so you may to write:

Your own ideas how you will like to present the different slides. How you will like to put the facts and documentation into words. What you will like to tell the seniors.

What questions you believe could be good for you to ask the senior learners

o to answer, o to discuss a little, o to reflect about.

It is important you make your presentation in your own words.

Create your own personal presentation but please stick to the facts as they are presented and avoid to present your own version of what you think ageing and what ageing period is about.

We believe the pedagogical intention should be, to establish a dialogue with your senior learners based on the slides you present.

Make sure you have time for that.

It is important to be aware using power point very easily speed up the presentation, which might not be beneficial for all senior learners

If it is possible to you, try to remember some of the information you are going to present. It might be a good idea to present some of the information, by chalk and blackboard or at a flip over.

Make sure the seniors have time to think, time to reflect. Time to ask questions.

It is serious to educate seniors have to avoid loosing their independent living later in life, howewer it is still important to have a good laugh once a while during the lessons.

Consider have you might be able to present some of the statements the material provide, with a little humorous approach and a smile

Prepare your self for a little resistance from some among your learners. You will probably meet resistance related to some of the results – statistics and the conclusions to make. To many senior learners some of the info and conclusions will be controversial as they don`t confirms or match, what many seniors believe, what many seniors assume as facts and what they have noticed and know from “their own experiences”.

Try to avoid entering into long discussions – just refer to what science tells – what the statistics show.

Some will also be critical. Make clear from the very begining that they overall frame of what you going to tell and show during the lessons to come, is:

»We aren’t going to talk about training and exercising to become a participant for the next Olympics. You are going to talk about, what it takes, what it require of a little weekly effort, training and ongoing exercises to maintain or develop the daily activities that will make us stay independent for longer later in life.

If any have ambition about making a world record it shold have been redeemed in our younger years.«

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES OF THIS PART.You find what the BEPRESEL partnership believe should be the objectives of this modul in the Curriculum: Senior Health Education – a BEtter PREparation for SEnior Life.

YOU COULD SAY:

What is our mindset when it comes to the ageing process? – To the years to come – and the final years of our life?

We have probably many different views or do we?

However, if we ask people to draw how they look on – how they think life develops through

Childhood Youth Adult – middle age Senior lifeThen most people will draw a line very much like the one I will show you on the next slide.

How would you draw it?

To the teacher:

you can consider providing them with a paper – with an x-axis and a y-axis – like the one to be presented and let them draw their point of view.

YOU COULD SAY:Click slowly forward to click 9:

This is a very typical way to many people - even professionals – to draw how we believe, consider and imaging how life develops.

Childhood, youth and pre-adult period up to 25 – 27 is very a green – positive – a time for DEVELOPMENT and LEARNING. We become stronger and stronger, more and more competent in almost all aspects of life. We think very positive and green about this period of life.

Adult and working life is a positive life period – but basically we don’t think that there is so much learning and development – perhaps more MAINTAINING and STAY IN BUSINESS. Good periods change with not so good periods. Some develops and some doesn`t. It is a little up and down period. We make it blue.

But suddenly and it various very much o in different countries, o in different cultures,

o in different families and socio-economis groups –

We start to think “down the hill”

For the first time we start to use our age as explanation why we lose physical strength

WORST OF ALL TO MANY OF US THINK LOSING STRENGTH AND CAPACTIY IS “NORMAL” WHEN IT COMES TO THE AGEING PERIOD

Question to senior learners: Is this identical how you consider life to develop?

Then you tell them – that we will call this “normal development” for plan B

Then you continue to show them plan A.

Click slowly forward to click 10 & 11

Tell them you can make any plan for any development they might wish from today.

o You can make a plan A as an example – you just have to make a plan that ensure they will do less than they do today – move less – sit more and so on.

o It will for sure guarantee that they will be in need of practical and personal support very quickly.

Click slowly forward to click 12 & 13

Then you offer them an alternative – to make a Plan C which will ensure they will be just as physical fit as they are today – 2, 3 or more years ahead.

o It only require that we measure have fit they are today – and they are willing to start to do some weekly maintaining physical exercises.

Finally you offer them to make the alternative Plan D which will ensure that they will be more physical fit as they are today – 2, 3 or more years ahead.

o It only require that we measure have fit they are today – and they are willing to start to do some weekly improving physical exercises.

Retorical:

“ I can make any plan you wish” – which one do you want me to make for you?”

CARE

Than to combine it with parachute jumping or competing in running a sprint of 100 meters or even cook our own food when we are 95.

We very often find it fantastic that a person of age 80, 85, 90 or 95 can do the shopping and cock their own food. Many of us believe these elderly are something special and use very often very positive phrases describing and telling about these people. “Fantastic” “He or she is something Special”

That is remarkable and thought full, as the figures we have just looked into tells very clearly, that to the majority of people age +80 and still to a huge number people at age 95; this is their normal daily living.

Question to the senior learners: Why is it so - What do you think?

Polemic statement

We don`t illustrate children at school areas – by showing children in wheel chairs.

Normally we in public don`t characterize a whole group by the disabled part of the group – but we do when it comes to us – to elderly citizens.

Question for open reflection:

Do we learn to identify ourselves with weakness and if we don`t feel weak – it is because

I am something special – I am lucky – so far – but will probably end up like presented at the

In the literature the elderly are often described very weak. We are often able to read in our daily newspapers and told by the television about the “burden to society of all the seniors in need of care” and even in

professional literature published at a university in 2018 they write and tell as very undiscussable truths:

“It is normal that the muscles weaken during life”

“… Normal that people lose strength becoming older”

Open question to the learners:

How do you understand these sentences? How do you understand the word “Normal”

But is it “NORMAL” to lose physical competences? &

Particularly. Is it normal to lose physical competences to an extent so we become dependent later in life?

It might be the final result – but it is because we let it happen. Because we

don’t take action in due time to avoid it.

Probably because we are told again and again and come to believe, that it is “NORMAL” to loose physical strength and competences during ageing

period.

BUT IT DOES NOT MAKE IT “NORMAL”No one told 92-year-old pensioner Svend Stensgaard from Lolland that it is “normal”. In 2015 he won the Danish Championship in strength lift for the

15th time.

He lifted a total of 250 kg via 3 different lifts. Bench press, squat and deadlift.

But he cheat –he exercise and train.

How many of you – are able to lift 250 kg this way?

We have all our personal experiences – watching people around us becoming older and old. Our parents – our grandparents

We have started the ageing process ourselves, being +60 or + 65, or are even further into the process. We might already have experienced that something has changed – something feels harder more challenging to do today than 10 or 20 years ago.

Perhaps we have given up some daily activities because they became too challenging to our physical conditions.

And it is easy to think or believe, based on our own experiences, that the loss. We might already have lost much. – That it is normal and to be expectedWe have SEEN it all our life – ever since we were children.

But having “seen it” does not make it “normal”.

It does not make it normal to lose abilities and competences to a degree where we lose our independency and self-governance.

It does not make losing abilities and competences an inevitable consequence caused by the ageing process.

When I was 45( or any other age) I also experienced that some tasks seemed to be more heavy than doing the same job when I was 25.

At that time it never crossed my mind, that it was because I had become older.

I knew instantly that the reason was, that I haven’t exercised enough in a long time up to; I suddenly had to solve the task at age 45.

Why and when do we suddenly start to explain that something becomes heavier to do now a day is caused my age? Have you used the explanation – excuse?

YOU COULD SAY:Let's get stuck.

We don`t know what “The normal ageing process” is. No one have ever seen “The normal ageing process”

Because we have never had a chance to watch it. To measure it.

All observations we personally might have. All the observations and measurements scientists can have done and performed are all based on observations of the generations going through the ageing process before us.

The ageing process was probably quite similar to people born in 1800 during the period of 1840 to 1860 compared to the ageing process their children born in 1825 went through

during the period of 1860 to 1885.Because life conditions didn’t change much from 1800 to 1825 and the years to follow.

Being 60 and entering the ageing process in 2018 have very different perspectives because my platform entering senior life – my previous life - is so different from the platform my own parents entered t senior life period.

We shall not make a long speech about the differences – just mention, that:

Parents, born in 1925 to 1930, were adults when the penicillin not yet was invented and introduced.

Food was not so diverse. Many of our previous generations have faced hunger periods.

Work requirements and the work environment were very different. And basically, the way being old was understood was different.

And so on.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

What should have been written on the university homepage mentioned before – is

&“…It is Normal that people loss strength becoming older,

YOU COULD SAY:Let`s make a short overview:

There are different ways to become dependent and in need of help during the ageing period.

A common way too many to become in need of care is caused by different diagnosis and diseases, presented at the slide as no 1, 2 and 3.

We will not focus on these causes in this program.

We will focus on 4 and 5.

However the initiatives and the different small efforts we will focus on in this program, are initiatives and small efforts, that will and can maintain our physical strength and competences targeting the lined reasons no 4 and 5, will at the same time have a substantial preventive impact on the reasons and causes presented as no 1, 2 and 3 at the slide.

YOU COULD SAY:There is no doubt that retirement. The opportunity to leave labor marked is a great gift and opportunity to people in general.

However it is also a gift with challenges, a potential “trap” we all have to cope with.

It is a big change going from being at work 37 to 45 hours 5 days a week out of the approximately 80 hours we on average are awake.

Beyond the salary, work is too many people also a huge part of some basic needs we probably all have. It contribute to our need to feel;

That we are doing something meaningful – that we contribute – To meet and solve challenges To meet and talk to other people.

All these are given almost for free – just going to work every day.

The day after last workday in life - we have to establish it all by ourselves.

It might be difficult to many – because we are not trained to create meaningfulness and many more things important to our life and to maintain life quality 80 hours form Monday to Friday. To some the weekend might already be a challenge

But that’s another story – in this program we will only focus on the physical challenges connected to retirement.

ADD YOUR OWN COMMENTS AND IDEAS FOR SPEAK AND PRESENTATION

YOU COULD SAY:This slide illustrate a number of all the activities we do on daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis.

We all have

A huge number of activities we do every day. Not necessarily very challenging – we just do them.

Some activities we do once in a while during the week – shopping – washing clothes, washing the floor etc. Not so challenging.

Some activities we do once a month. Washing windows, washing the floor – sweeping outside. Often more heavy and challenging.

Finally, we have some activities we do once every half a year, seasonable activities or when needed once a year – shovel snow – digging the garden. Often more heavy and challenging activities

We can easily identify and count between 1.500 to 2.500 activities we do as human beings.

Of course, it is different from person to person what we do – but we do a lot of things to survive, to have fun, to feel important – to feel that we do something meaningful and so on.

All kinds of activities is a work.

It can be a very small work (brushing teeth) and it can be a very big and hard job. Digging the garden. But all kind of work can be measured for what it takes and require to do the work. Reguirement to our stamina and

21

Page 23: bepresel.eubepresel.eu/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/English-IO2... · Web viewTo combine later life – our image and expectation regarding later life, being age 90 or age 101 with

condition is in Watt and muscles in newton, kilos and number of moving or lifting or pushing a certain number of kilos.

There is a basic physiological rule/experience saying that we need to use, to challenge – to stimulate our physical and cognitive competences at a limit of minimum 80% 2 times a week to maintain a competence and minimum 3 times to improve our competences and strength.

Looking at the slide – as example it is shown that the “hardest job” this person do on annual basis is task no. 18 – a work set to require 40W.

However, the person only do it once or a few times a year. It could be shoveling snow. Because the person only do it once or a few times a year – the person will not have the competences to do this “most demanding job” if it was not for the fact, that a part of his job must train and stimulate and by that maintain the specific physical strength needed to do work no. 18.

Only doing the most heavy job once a while or as in this case only a few times a year, doesn`t maintain the capacity to do this particularly task/job.

The person will slowly expire that this particularly job seems to be more challenging as time goes by – the person will start to make small breaks doing this particularly task and at the end give it up. Ask someone else to do it.

We are given many things free – when it comes to training and maintaining our physical strength and cognitive competences – just going to work.

Let`s illustrate.

At work all, my colleagues spoke to me and asked me on average at least 40 different things to remember and to do every day. Tomorrow, my first day as a retiree, no one will ask me to remember anything. Perhaps my wife will ask me a few things, but not 40 things day after day.

The service woman at the workplace – was measured to walk 8 to 12 kilometers on a normal workday. In between she went up and down 20 stairs a least 10 times on average every day. She receives a lot of physical training 5 days a week –and she was even paid to do all these physical exercisest.

It takes approximately 2 to 2,5 hours to walk 8 to 12 km at normal walking speed.

Tomorrow she is retired – now she has 37 hours more per week to do want she want.

22

Will she find 2 to 2,5 hours for walking? Will she be able to find the motivation to walk 8 to 12 km 5 days a

week? Will she on daily basis find time to train her leg muscles by climbing

up and down 10 x 20 stairs 5 days a week?.

Ask the senior learners: what do you think happens? Are anyone able to identify with some of the two stories.

YOU COULD SAY:

Now we have retired and become pensioner and senior citizen.

The most challenging work “I” have to do now, is no. 18.

However, because I only do this once a year or a few times a year – I will slowly as mentioned before lose my ability to do work number 18. In addition, I will slowly at the same time or shortly after start to feel that it becomes harder and harder to do work number 19 and 21.

Whether I will be able to maintain the ability to do all the rest without feeling it is harder and harder to do – depends very much on work no. 11.

How many times do I perform work no 11 per week? If it is something, I do 2 or more times a week – it will for a period maintain the competences it requires and by that secure my ability to do all the other types of work and task in my daily life.

But if I only do work no 11 once a week, it will not have an maintaining effect and I will over time have to give up doing work no 11 and then afterwards I will also over time lose the ability to do work 12,14 and 15.

That’s how life develops for too many people entering senior life.

24

Page 26: bepresel.eubepresel.eu/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/English-IO2... · Web viewTo combine later life – our image and expectation regarding later life, being age 90 or age 101 with

We slowly lose our capacity and competences to do what we normally do. We lose slowly what we in fact would like to be able to do later in life.

YOU COULD SAY:

If I, later in life, would like to be able to do activity/work no 18, 19 and 21 and by that keep my ability to do what I normally do all the year around, I have to start an activity/a work that is more demanding than 40 W.

An activity performed at a level of intensity that train and maintain (in this case) my physical strength at a level higher than 40 W.

In this case it is shown as an activity of 60 W and I have to perform this task at least twice a week.

The activity could be anything – but it has to match and maintain the strength and competences I need to perform the activities, the “work”, and the task I would like to be able to perform, as a part of my life inclusive to do later in life – all year around.

That`s what most of us fail to understand. Many of us have understood that we need to be active in ageing life – but don`t necessarily combine the activities we choose to do and perform in senior life:

25

Page 27: bepresel.eubepresel.eu/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/English-IO2... · Web viewTo combine later life – our image and expectation regarding later life, being age 90 or age 101 with

With the requirements of the tasks we would like to be able to do later in life.

With the requirement to the level of physical strength and stamina to do the tasks what I will like to do later in life.

Why do 1 hour walk every day not maintain my ability.

To handle my garden? To vacuum my home? To hang up my washing?

Answer: Because walking contributes to develop or maintain our physical fitness.

What is important/required to do the lined up activities is more than physical fitness – it requires muscle power. You don`t maintain your muscles strength by walking – and you don`t maintain your ability to vacuum your home by doing it once a week)

We will look deeper into this fact – a little later.

If I will like to vacuum my home and wash my floor when I think it is needed and necessary to do it. If I don`t want to be depending on others to make this decision. Then some activities I do today and during the time and years to come have to stimulate and maintain the competences and strength it require to vacuum and wash a floor minimum twice a week.

Losing once ability to take care of once tasks is a slow and long termed process – it is a process of years – but most of us will face it – and probably some of us can already point out things we have given up.

YOU COULD SAY:These figures from Denmark show what easily happens to us – when we retire and enter senior life.

400 elderly at the age of 70 participated in this research. Age 70 is to most people 3 to 5 years after retirement in Denmark,

They were all asked to do approximately 40 different daily activities important for them to do.

Activities they normally did on daily basis, weekly basis, monthly basis and annual basis. Just as explained before.

While they did these different activities, it was measured how much strength(kilo/newton) and stamina(watt) it required from these seniors to perform these different activities.

Then 5 years went on.

Everyone still alive was tested again – and it showed the following result.

The result showed during a 5-year period all now becoming age 75:

30% or 1 out of 3: o Already find it harder and much harder, more challenging to

do the same activities at 75 years old than they did when they were 70 years. Some had already given up some of the activities they were able to do 5 years earlier.

Some could think that it is expected – it is a part of “NORMAL AGEING”

This point of view is of course challenged by the fact and the result, showing that

60% or 6 out of 10o the majority of 60% was evaluated to the same level or

standard as 5 years earlier. These seniors did not find it more challenging or difficult to do the same activities as they did when they were at age 70. They have all maintained their ability to do all the activities

The point of view some might have; that it is a normal part of becoming older to loose physical strength, is even more challenged by the last result showing that

1 out of 10 o 10% have become obviously stronger at age 75 than they

were when they were age 70 years old. The handled the same tasks and activities better than they did 5 years younger.

So, we can conclude: It is not normal to lose physical competence and by that, abilities to do what we would like to do – and what we need to do because of becoming older – because of age.

Some lose = 30%o Because they don`t do enough during weekly life to maintain

their ability.

Some maintain = 60%o Because they in their daily life have activities at the needed

level and at an intensity that maintain their ability to do what they would like to do – and what they need to do.

Some improve = 10%

o Some improve their strength during the 5 years – from age 70 to age 75.

o These 10% shows we - elderly can become stronger during the ageing process.

THIS IS AN IMPORANT KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE TO HAVE.

A POLEMIC QUESTION:

In which of these 3 groups do we think/do we believe we later on will find:

Most seniors losing physical strength to such a level that they lose their independency later in life.

Perhaps we already at age 75 and even before can point out those who will be in need of care later in life.

It is clear that all are in risk of becoming in need of care. – All can become ill. Have a stroke and so on.

However, it is just as clear that 30% of this group already are on a sliding course - down the hill, into dependency and a life situation where they will be depending on practical and personal support.

Becoming physically weaker day by day and year by year as these 30% of the group did – also increases the risk of a number of diseases – related to lower and lower level of daily, weekly and annual physical activity.

YOU COULD SAY:

Are anyone able to recognize these thoughts?

YOU COULD SAY:Read statement 1 loud.

We will later show you

how only 10 weeks, can make a huge change in senior life and

how only 8 months, from age 85 to 86, can change and decide if our future will be:

Staying independent at my 87th birthday

orBecoming a resident at a care home at my 87th birthday.

Does statement 2 surprise you?

Basically it says; that all that we have done of “good things” earlier in life, at age 50 and age 60:

Eating healthy food – not smoked – doing regularly exercise will not be to any beneficiary 10 or 15 years later – if we haven`t done anything since.

It is what we have done during the last weeks and months that counts for the future.

It is never too late – to start.

YOU COULD SAY:

For now, we can tell that research’s shows, that if we compare

The group of people living “by all the health rules” up to age 60, with

A group of people not living at all “by all the health rules” up to age 60

Will have the same level of functionality when we become age 75,

if group 2 starts now at age 60.

And yes. It is fair to the active ones in group 2.

Why? Because many more people from group 2 reached age 60 or more than people from group 1.

Group to have already received their rewards – as much more people from group 2 are still alive.

The good message to all is

It is never too late to start –To invest a little to have a better health, maintain your strength one year

from now, 2 years from now or 5 years from now.

To do well – don`t require a huge change of life style – We j talk about implementing small efforts regularly in our weekly life.
