Role Description: December 2017
Position purpose
The Manager Library Research Services works under broad direction and is responsible for developing and managing the research services for the University Library. The Manager Library Research Services leads two functional teams: library research services; and print and digital special collections, including the Library’s digital initiatives and repositories
Position location
The Manager Research Services is located within the Library Academic and Research Services Directorate of the University Library. The Directorate is responsible for providing the Library’s extensive research and outreach services to the research and academic communities.
Strategic context
The Library’s Strategy Map aligns to Victoria’s Strategic Plan. The Manager Library Research Services will help the University Library achieve its goals by overseeing the relationships and services for the research and academic communities of the University.
Key responsibilities
Research servicesKey responsibilities:
Implement the strategic and policy development and management of the Library’s research services
Build an effective network with key stakeholders across the University to maintain relationships with projects and activities that impact on the Library’s research services
Lead the development of services and resources to support the research lifecycle, including using trends analysis and evidence to support research support initiatives
Provide advice and assistance with research data management, curation and preservation Ensure the provision of consistently high quality service delivery through all channels by
implementing regular reviews, client feedback mechanisms and improvement processes on all services offered
Contribute to the University’s work on managing big data and linked data, including enabling discovery, access and re-use
Contribute to the strategic direction of the Library through active participation as a member of the Extended Library Leadership Team
Research and assess emerging practices in relation to research support to ensure that the Library’s research services remain relevant to its users
Outcome
The Library provides highly effective research services to the academic and research community.
Special collections and discoveryKey responsibilities
Lead and manage the strategic operations of the Library’s special collections, including the JC Beaglehole Room
Lead and manage the strategic operations in regards to digitisation of print and born digital resources and initiatives of the University’s research output, including preservation processes, digital rights management, and metadata standards

Cultivate partnerships with University key stakeholders in developing research collections In collaboration with the Research Office, oversee the strategy and policy development and
management of the University’s institutional repositories Champion projects in the digital humanities and related digital projects in collaboration with
relevant Library staff and the University’s research community Oversee the marketing and promotion of digitised resources and collections Plan and prepare comprehensive budget reports for the Library’s digitisation projects

The Library’s special collections are well managed and preserved for the future.

Key relationships
The following positions report directly to the Manager Library Research Services: Research Services Librarian (2 FTE) Digital Services Librarian Special Collections Librarian Library Advisor
The Manager Library Research Services will develop and maintain excellent working relationships with staff in the Library, in other central services units and across faculties and schools, including research centres. The Manager Library Research Services will also work with other organisations and vendors as required to perform effectively in the position.

Selection criteria – essential
A degree from a higher education institution with subsequent relevant experience, postgraduate qualifications with relevant experience or an equivalent level of knowledge gained through any other combination of education, training and/or experience
Eligibility for the associate membership of the Library and Information Association of New Zealand Aotearoa
Demonstrated experience in developing high quality and effective services for research support such as research impact and metrics, research data management and publishing models
Sound understanding of the development and management of research collections within an academic environment or similar organisation, including processes and best practice for preservation and implementing metadata and description standards
Demonstrated experience to effectively and positively manage and lead people and teams in a changing environment
High level of communication, interpersonal and negotiation skills with demonstrated ability to influence and sustain relationships with a variety of stakeholders both within and outside the Library
Demonstrated experience in understanding relevant library systems and education technologies and their application in the higher education sector, including design and usability
Ability and capacity to direct and monitor the implementation and effectives of the health and safety processes
