GUEST EDITORIAL Josephine Shallo-Hoffmann, Ph.D., and First Graduates, MSCVR Program Web-based learning: An alternative to classroom learning T he rapid development of infor- mation technologies continues to change the way people work, shop, communicate, and play. To ac- commodate the need and desire of most health care professionals to re- main in their current locations and em- ployment, Nova Southeastern Univer- sity (NSU) College of Optometry launched an online Master of Science in Clinical Vision Research (MSCVR) program via its state-of-the-art, Web- based distance learning technology (optometry.nova.edu/cvr/). Rationale for an all online MS program in clinical vision research The MSCVR, 45-credit, tuition-based program is the first all-online initiative designed by a college of optometry to meet the diverse interests and needs of optometric physicians. The focus of this unique program is to bridge clini- cal care in optometry with vision sci- ence by educating optometrists, opto- metric educators, optometric students, and other health care professionals in the basics so they can conduct clinical research in a patient care or academic setting. The program has the potential to broaden the student’s career oppor- tunities that might also yield to profes- sional advancement and prestige. Within a safe and confidential Web environment, students have the oppor- tunity to interact with a variety of other professionals interested in the same training and who bring their own unique life experiences to the learning situation. The MSCVR program provides the student with an opportunity to acquire or enhance knowledge and skills to design, develop, perform, analyze, and evaluate research projects and studies. Students worldwide complete their coursework on their home or office computers without having to sacrifice their professional or personal obliga- tions; they also have access to the ex- tensive electronic library provided by NSU: www.nova.edu/library/eleclib/ eleclib.htm. This program attracts in- dividuals who have an interest in doing clinical trials or their own re- search projects, presenting research at professional meetings, attaining the ability to critically evaluate re- search in the literature, or applying for grants and awards. It is also an avenue for promotion based on aca- demic achievement. During the first year of study, stu- dents take core courses that build the foundation to be able to investigate a research question. These courses focus on giving the student a set of skills that address ethical and legal issues in hu- man subject research, statistics, re- search design, research funding, and proposal writing. Courses highlight how to use information science (library resources) and prepare studies for pre- sentation or publication. Students re- ceive a certificate upon successful completion of the core courses. An important characteristic of this online program is the personal guid- ance from teaching and advising fac- ulty who work directly with the stu- dent. One of the most attractive features during the second year of training is that the specialization track is individually designed to fit the spe- cific interests and expertise of each student. For example, if a student had an interest in pediatrics and contact lenses, advanced courses and a thesis project could reflect both areas of con- centration. Last May, the College held its first commencement ceremony for the stu- dents in the MSCVR program. Four students, (one from as far away as Luzern, Switzerland), celebrated their completion of this rigorous 2-year pro- gram. After completion of the pro- gram, the 4 CVR graduates find them- selves well prepared to face the challenges of contributing to the re- search and knowledge base of their profession: “The MSCVR program has pro- vided a research knowledge base that has changed the way I think about patient care. It has become solidly ev- idence/value based with knowledge of the resources to assess these decision trees and critically evaluate the litera- ture. The long-termhared goal of all MSCVR-supportedctivities is to use technology to facil-tate access and usage to (1) optome-rists, (2) health care professionals, (3)ndividuals employed or seeking em-loyment in pharmaceutical firms, (4)ptometrists in the Indian Health Ser-ice and the Veteran Administration,5) academicians, and (6) health carerofessionals in the military who canailor degree-at-a-distance to their mil-tary assignments and duty schedules.

The program is small and the admin-stration does not intend to expand it tonclude a large number of students.linical research demands expertise,
