WATERCOLOR ART OF STEVE HANKS About Steve Hanks Although teachers often cited his artistic ability, Steve Hanks’ main interest while growing up around San Francisco was sports. As a young teenager, Hanks pursued surfing and tennis with passion. He eventually tired of a steady diet of competitive tennis, but continued to surf, finding a spiritual connection with the ocean. “Surfing had a strong influence on my paintings,” he says. “The ocean often appears in my work, because I have such strong feelings for it.” Although it was apparent early on that he had talent, Hanks refused to do the required assignments in his high school art class and earned a grade of C in the class. “To prove I was good, I did a one-man show at the high school and sold my first painting to another art teacher,” he says. After high school Hanks enrolled in summer session commercial art courses at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. “The only way I could convince my parents to let me go was to say I was going into commercial art,” he says. “I didn’t even know what that was!” He did well in his commercial art classes, but it was a life drawing class that captured his interest. He focused his energy on the study of anatomy and figure drawing and transferred into the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California. He graduated in the 1960s with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, and then moved back to New Mexico in search of a home art gallery. Initially, he drew in pencil and painted in oils. His paintings were impressionistic while his drawings were more realistic. Eventually, an allergic reaction to oils forced him to experiment with watercolors. Using the techniques learned from other mediums, he found he could create watercolors as “finished” as oils. Deeply affected by the emotions, shifting attitudes and music of the 1960s, the music of 60s icon Bob Dylan often accompanies Hanks as he paints in his studio today. Steve Hanks’ paintings are much more than endearing images of women and children. Rather than conveying a specific message through his paintings, Hanks prefers to explore memories and emotions. “All art is an escape to somewhere you want to be or a feeling you want to have," Hanks says. "People see different things in my paintings because we all have different backgrounds and feelings.” Hanks highly collected nudes convey an introspective solitude that prompts the viewer to think about his or her own life and path. “Women occupy a special niche in my sensitivity. They express more storytelling ability. There’s more magic in them,” he says. Art jurors began recognizing the quality of his work in 1973. Steve Hanks won the Arts for the Parks Marine Art Award of Excellence in 1990 and 1994, and has been one of the Arts for the Parks top 100 artists since 1989. In 1991, Steve Hanks received the National Watercolor Society Merit Award and the National Academy of Western Art awarded him the Gold Medal in 1992. Since 1993, he has been one of U.S. Art Magazine's top ten American artists. When the Pacific Rim show in Seattle, WA decided to open the show up to a wider variety of art in 1999, they selected Steve as Artist of the Year. About Steve Hanks

Although teachers often cited his artistic ability, Steve Hanks main interest while growing up around San Francisco was sports. As a young teenager, Hanks pursued surfing and tennis with passion. He eventually tired of a steady diet of competitive tennis, but continued to surf, finding a spiritual connection with the ocean. Surfing had a strong influence on my paintings, he says. The ocean often appears in my work, because I have such strong feelings for it. Although it was apparent early on that he had talent, Hanks refused to do the required assignments in his high school art class and earned a grade of C in the class. To prove I was good, I did a one-man show at the high school and sold my first painting to another art teacher, he says.

After high school Hanks enrolled in summer session commercial art courses at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. LIMITED EDITION CANVAS Image size: 13"w x 27"h. Edition Size: 75 US: $495.00

Like most of artist Steve Hanks paintings, there are rich layers of meaning and emotion in "Field of Dreams," his entry into the 2012 prestigious, national invitational Prix de West. Everything in this vertical composition points to the young girls dreams as the eye is drawn from her Western boots to her hair to the horses face to the road that carries you finally to the shining mountains on the horizon.

The connection between the girl and her horse is intimate and we can

practically smell the animal and feel its breath on her shoulder. Strong and absolutely trustworthy, the beloved horse is her most faithful confidant. This painting is about hopes and dreams that are shared and communicated in silence. Art can do that, too, says Hanks. This spectacular landscape of a young womans dreams will inspire everyone who sees it and warm any room in your home.

  • Blowin in the Wind LIMITED EDITION PRINT Image size: 9"w x 12"h. Edition Size:200 US: $125.00

Artist Steve Hanks tends to explore memories and emotions through his painting, rather than convey a specific message. Art is an escape to somewhere you want to be or a feeling you want to have, Hanks says. In this darling portrait of youth and innocence, the girl is alone but not lonely. Shes looking in the direction that the wind blows. Bright, cheerful colors of childhood spread against a blank background that is the future she will both meet, and create. Meanwhile, whats sturdier than a wooden bench bolted into concrete?

The music of the 1960s, especially Bob Dylan, often accompanies the artist as he paints in his studio so the title of this painting was close at hand as he put the final touches on this jewel that is poetry in motion.

Two artists make accomplished perfection appear effortless. We see the dancers mastery of balance and grace through the artists command of shape and form and the play of light on and about her through his superb mastery of watercolor paints. This Fine Art Edition is the finishing touch in the creation of a truly elegant living space.

Aspen Winter LIMITED EDITION CANVAS Image size: 30"w x 25"h. Edition Size:50 US: $695.00

This painting is not about a woman Id like to be with, but rather its homage to a town that is so very close to my heart, says artist Steve Hanks. At the risk of sounding like the Chamber of Commerce, Aspen is a very special place, averaging over 300 days of sunshine year and yes, the skiing is legendary. Its also home to Steve Hanks original painting gallery and decades of wonderful memories for the artist and his three children. Hanks command of watercolor craft is on full display in this portrayal of confident anticipation of a great day on the slopes. If youve ever been here, or hope to go, this love letter to Aspen will ensure that you hold onto that dream.

Time Standing Still ANNIVERSARY EDITION CANVAS Image size: 16"w x 25"h. Edition Size:50 US: $495.00 (Gallery Wrap Available for an additional $30 US.)

Published from the artist's original work. As is often the case with Steve Hanks nudes, there is sense of privacy expressed by his models, something he refers to as introspective solitude. His exceptional watercolor technique is the perfect medium for capturing the quality of light and shadow that is as much the subject of this painting as the woman.

I like to consider those times when we make lifes major decisions, says artist Steve Hanks, "when we are alone with our thoughts, when we both confront and challenge ourselves. I titled this "Time Standing Still" because we all want time to stop when we experience beautiful moments in life, but life can never stop, except in art.

  • Sunshine After the Rain ANNIVERSARY EDITION CANVAS Image size: 14"w x 28"h. Edition Size:55 US: $545.00

(Gallery Wrap Available for an additional $30 US.) Steve Hanks is renowned for his skills as a figure painter but the viewer can see with "Sunshine After Rain" that Hanks artistic ability commands every aspect of this painting. The work itself is titled in such a way as to require no explanation. His mastery in painting reflected water is in full display on the deck of this Victorian seaside retreat. His fans will recognize in this image a favorite metaphor of light following darkness. The carefree step of a barefoot young girl expresses the hope of youth and innocence as the breezy summer afternoon dries out all that remains of the rain. The graceful architectural details frame her pathway as she strides into a bright future.

    Where the Healing Begins

ANNIVERSARY EDITION CANVAS Image size: 16"w x 28"h. Edition Size:55 US: $545.00 (Gallery Wrap Available for an additional $30 US.) "Where the Healing Begins" has reigned at the top of Steve Hanks collected and most requested imagery for release as a Greenwich Workshop Anniversary Giclee Canvas Edition.

This truly beautiful painting captures the essence of the concept of starting anew. Sitting on a porch overlooking the Pacific, a

new day arises around an obviously introspective woman.

Oceans, in Hanks visual storytelling, are vast expanses and in comparison we are very small. When one of his paintings occurs near

the sea, the subjects are often contemplating a significant passage in their lives.

She sits amid an array of plants and flowers still in their plastic containers ready to be planted in fertile soil. Hanks message is there are times when you have to just start replanting, create a new beginning and grow from there.

The most compelling part of the painting is the woman herself. Her head is down, reflecting on her life and trying to understand it. Even though it is a great big, beautiful world, she still has to find herself before she can find her place in it. She carries an introspective solitude that prompts the viewer to think about his or her own life path. Women occupy a special niche in Hanks sensitivity. They express more storytelling ability and he captures a certain magic in them others miss. All art is an escape to somewhere you want to be or a feeling you want to have. "Where the Healing Begins" is one of those special paintings that deliver something unique to each viewer, depending on their respective backgrounds and perspectives.

On the surface, the story behind this painting is straight forward, begins Steve Hanks. This young woman has decided that it is time for her to leave home and make her own way in the world. The choice is hers and she is confident and self assured in her decision. But as it is

with most of my paintings, there is a deeper, personal story to it. Years ago I painted a piece called Traveling with Dad. It showed me holding my daughter on an empty platform at a deserted railway stop. I painted that image at what was, without a doubt, the

lowest point of my life. I was on my own raising two kids and the painting truly captured that

feeling of the unknown future that we were heading toward. Youll notice that this young woman carries the same suitcase I had on the platform.

There Are Places to Go LIMITED EDITION PRINT Image size: 22"w x 15 3/4"h. Edition Size:150 US: $295.00

Today, I am a long way down that track and it turns out our stop was in New Mexico. I

have always painted the mountains, the sea

and rivers and lakes so it seemed to me for

the longest time that Albuquerque was a place

that I was going to either pass through or

leave from. Well, the years passed and time

has revealed that this was our destination.

Albuquerque is our home. That little girl I once could easily hold in my arms is now grown up.

The future is hers. She is going to be making

her own decisions, which will determine the

    places she is headed toward.

"There Are Places to Go" is as fine an example

of contemporary realism as you are going to find today in the art world. Steve Hanks is

recognized as one of the countrys most important figurative artists. His technical skills

combined with his captivating storytelling set

    his work apart from others.

  • Nestled in the splendor of Banff National Park lies a Canadian national treasure - the emerald colored waters of Lake Louise. Until you have the chance to go there, you cant understand just how beautiful Canadian Rockies are. To me, emphasizes Steve Hanks, this place is Canada.

Hanks is renowned as one of the finest figurative artists painting today. That description understates his skills as a landscape artist and the importance he puts on the specific environments he creates for the figures he paints. The title of this painting really says it all, 'Canadian Beauty.' A striking woman with auburn hair relaxes at the waters edge in mid-summer, with Chateau Lake Louise and the jagged snow-capped mountains in the background.

    Canadian Beauty

LIMITED EDITION CANVAS Image size: 26"w x 15"h. Edition Size:50 US: $495.00 (Gallery Wrap Available for an additional $30 US.) Also Available As: MASTERWORK CANVAS EDITION Image size: 43"w x 24"h. Edition Size: 20 US: $950.00

The blend of serenity and majesty that this place radiates is awe-inspiring. The character of Banff and of the Canadian Rockies is completely different than that of their American counterparts because of their geography and geology. Most dramatically, they appear steeper and more jagged because of the extent to which the limestone and shale has been carved out by glaciers. The cooler and wetter climate that enhanced the formation of these glaciers created moister soil for lush forests and larger rivers as well. The Chateau Lake Louise is one of the iconic railway hotels built in the early 1900s by the Canadian Pacific Railway. The lake itself is fed by mountain streams and is given its turquoise hue by fine particles of rock ground to nearly microscopic size by the glaciers above.

The beauty and seeming simplicity of this Steve Hanks painting gives little hint of the complexity within it. Each child interacts with the rain differently. As we grow older our perspective broadens and nowhere is this more obvious than with children. As with many Hanks paintings, "Summer Rain" is a metaphor for life. The umbrella and companionship offer these girls shelter from passing storms. They will master the simple steps of living and then apply them to lifes harder challenges.

    Summer Rain

    LIMITED EDITION CANVAS Image size: 12"w x 18"h. Edition Size:75 US: $325.00

This is a recent painting I did on Clayboard, says artist Steve Hanks, a surface that still amazes me as a watercolor artist. The colors are brighter, the rainwater and reflections are even more realistic. Summer rain is a passing necessity for everything that grows and a thing of wonderment to the young

    Gentle Tide

    LIMITED EDITION PRINT Image size: 6"w x 17"h. Edition Size:200 US: $125.00

A quiet moment of reflection after a long, hard day, occupies this young woman.

Water is an elemental force in much of artist Steve Hanks work whether it be ocean-based landscapes or figures in lakes, rivers, and yes, even bathwater. We are, after all, largely made of water. Its movement and fluidity reflect and inspire our lives. Hanks paintings of children offer beautiful surface stories layered with potent meaning. He stays connected to both the loneliness and the magic of childhood.

    Time of Wonder LIMITED EDITION PRINT Image size: 22 1/2"w x 9 1/2"h. Edition Size:125 US: $175.00

"Time of Wonder" conveys the unknown possibilities in the future of a single young life as he faces the seemingly infinite ocean. What I like most about this painting is the way the overcast, misty sky affects the light and colors, like the clarity of the waves breaking behind the boy and the fog sitting on the mountains in the background, says the artist. Its a very solitary, magical place and this youngster is not standing still in this vast landscape. Hes moving forward.

  • Much of Steve Hanks art carries subtle symbolism with children as the focal point. These paintings are filled with his hopes for the young.

    Baby Bath

    LIMITED EDITION PRINT Image size: 12"w x 8"h. Edition Size:200 US: $95.00

After all, what is more pleasing than a baby bath, except possibly two babies in the bath and in this particular painting, they are a friends fraternal twins, a boy and girl. Curiosity and fascination with water begins at the very beginning. These two are splashing, patting and swirling their way to figuring out the physical world and each other. Is one leading the way or is the other giving orders? This simple summer backyard scene by artist Steve Hanks will find a home in your playroom, nursery or bathroom.

Recently artist Steve Hanks has been working on a series of paintings he refers to as There are Angels Among Us wherein he explores the idea of guardian angels in our lives. These may be angels of inspiration, angels of beauty, angels who provide direction or protection in our lives and the spirits of angels who lift us and sometimes even carry us. Mostly he is creating a tribute to the great role models and influences in his own life.

Boundless is a compelling composition. Her gesture like a metaphor for the cross, this joyous beauty leaps into a shaft of sunlight on an otherwise dim and foggy beach. Viewers are left to wonder, will she come down or is she on her way, eternally up? This limited Fine Art Edition will bring inspiration to any room in your home and a gift of light to someone you love.

    In the Warm Savannah Sun

    LIMITED EDITION PRINT Image size: 16 1/4"w x 25"h. Edition Size:100 US: $395.00

I didnt grow up in the South, says artist Steve Hanks, but I love the feel of it, especially Savannah, Charleston and New Orleans. These places fit the emotions I use in my art. The young woman in this painting is lost in a moment of reflection but her posture is relaxed anticipation. Shes ready for whats coming her way.

"In the Warm Savannah Sun" captures the most compelling qualities of Steve Hanks artwork. The single feminine figure, defined by sunlight and shadow, caught up in private emotions but placed in a specific physical location. We can feel the warm sunlight on her shoulders and the cool stone tile underfoot. The ubiquitous wrought iron fences of Savannah are here, as well as its beloved live oak trees with Spanish moss in the background.

Even though I talk about my art as being an emotional representation of my life, says Hanks, the model does have a strong influence on a painting. I dont look for photographic modeling types. I look for real people that I think would look good in a painting and most of them have not modeled before. Their innocence and shyness comes through. As is often the case with Steve Hanks nudes, the quality of light and shadow is as much the subject of the painting as the women.

I find those straight, long roads that transverse the barrenness of nowhere so intriguing. Who lives out there, what do they do? Imagine having grown up in one of those small Midwestern towns and what it is like to decide it is time to leave that small-town life behind? asks Steve Hanks. I think we all want to believe we would take the road less traveled, but are we prepared for the inclement weather or the time that may pass before opportunity offers us a ride? Certainly, this girl radiates inner confidence and everything about her, right down to her off-beat clothes, represents one who would choose to take the road less traveled.

    The Road Less Traveled

LIMITED EDITION PRINT Image size: 24"w x 16 1/4"h. Edition Size:150 US: $325.00 Also Available As: MASTERWORK CANVAS EDITION Image size: 37"w x 25"h. Edition Size: 50 US: $850.00

One of the unique qualities of this work is that

that the original was a watercolor painted on

Clayboard. The paints sit on top of the Clayboard surface rather than being

absorbed into it as it does with traditional

watercolor paper. The sharper color this

creates comes alive all the more when

varnished, a technique watercolorists dont have the chance to employ.

  • Hold Onto the Gate LIMITED EDITION CANVAS Image size: 16"w x 11"h. Edition Size:150 US: $250.00

I love to revisit the times when my kids were young and innocent and liked to play make-believe," says artist Steve Hanks. "This little angel is probably too young to be outside the gate by herself so she's going to hold on tightly, with both hands."

"Hold Onto the Gate" is a darling portrait of a child's first glimpse of life outside the family. The elaborate wrought iron gate makes a dramatic backdrop to the fragility of the little ballerina standing before it. She won't be like this for long.

With "Reflecting on Indian Beach," Steve Hanks shows just why he is regarded as the best watercolor artist painting in America today. It is a definitive combination of beauty, emotion and environment. There is a big difference between the beaches of the Northern Pacific

Coast and those down in Southern California, says Hanks.

    Reflecting on Indian Beach

    LIMITED EDITION PRINT Image size: 30"w x 20"h. Edition Size:75 US: $550.00

The surf rolls in over long shallow flats. The waves pound and boil for great distances, creating in the air thick moisture. This subtly diffuses the light creating an atmosphere palatably different than that on the beaches farther south.

What began in his mind as a relatively

straight-forward painting took Hanks over a month to create. He became absorbed in building the large reflective areas of the tidal flats. It seems as if we can reach in ourselves and run our fingers through the cool, moist sand at this serene and magical place where tree-lined mountains slip beneath the surface of the sea.

As we grow older our perspective broadens and nowhere is this more obvious than with children. And, as is so often the case with a painting by Steve Hanks, the beauty and seeming simplicity of the work gives no hint of the complexity beneath.

    Children on La Jolla Shores

    LIMITED EDITION CANVAS Image size: 31"w x 10"h. Edition Size:75 US: $550.00

Each child interacts with the beach as they do the world. The youngest boy in the back is focused on his older sister. She in turn is picking up a shell, something in her immediate vicinity.

The third, grasping some seaweed makes the connection between it and the ocean from which it came. The oldest stares down the beach toward a group of surfers, the opening of the next phase of life beyond the immediate family.

    Scenic View

    LIMITED EDITION PRINT Image size: 18 1/2"w x 25 1/4"h. Edition Size:75 US: $495.00

Shes at the edge of a low wall with no clear path ahead but her eyes are drawn to the sweep of white foam from the crashing waves in the cove below. From there her dreams can soar. The turn of her head contributes to the paintings expression of solitude and yet we share her view. Everything about this woman says confidence and the beautiful composition of physical and geographic curves presents an elegant portrait for any room in the house.

  • Raising Daughters LIMITED EDITION CANVAS Image size: 36"w x 14"h. Edition Size:100 US: $695.00

As this family enjoys a walk along the beach in Del Mar, California, says artist Steve Hanks, a discussion with the younger daughter takes the full attention of her parents. This gives her older sister a chance to pursue her interests. Ive heard it said that when you raise a boy you only have one boy to worry about, but when you raise a daughter you have all of them to worry about. To illustrate this in 'Raising Daughters,' the two girls and their mothers are the only females on the beach. I carried the story further by making the older daughter and the boy she is admiring into a couple in the far distant background, walking away.

    MASTERWORK ANNIVERSARY EDITION Image size: 46"w x 20"h. Edition Size:75 US: $995.00

The only people on the balcony are an elderly couple who have made it through their life together and are observing everyone else. They have made it to the highest level and I view them with envy and pride.

"I was attracted to the wrought iron, the architecture and the overall romance of the city. New Orleans has a character that takes time to absorb." Like the characters who populate it, this lively tribute to one of America's most storied cities will take a lifetime to fully discover and enjoy.

Young at Heart LIMITED EDITION PRINT Image size: 21"w x 9 1/4"h. Edition Size:75 US: $275.00

Each time I do an interview, says Steve Hanks, I am asked what my goals are. My answer is always, the journey is the goal. People too often focus on getting that great house or career and spend their lives working for it. In the process, they miss out on the special times. Its good to keep the important things in the foreground.

The couple in "Young at Heart" has discovered a valuable secret to staying young: companionship and laughter. As they travel the mountain road together enjoying the scenery and one others company, their time-tested love brings them great happiness.

  • Dancing on the Shore (1) LIMITED EDITION CANVAS Image size: 10"w x 14"h. Edition Size:75 US: $210.00

"This private dance on the foggy Oregon beach expresses joy and freedom," says Steve Hanks. "As the young dancer twirls, we learn that we are not the audience this dance is meant for." From the girl's simple yet powerful reflection in the water to the sunlight dissipating through the misty sky, this beautiful work of art will make an uplifting and inspiring addition to any wall.

Collectors love Steve Hanks work for his heartwarming portraits of children and families, his sensitive depictions of women and his prodigious skill with watercolors. The March/April 2008 issue of "Art of the West" which carried a feature on the artist and "American Artist Watercolor" magazine declared him a Modern Master and a watercolorist who inspires and informs in their Winter 2008 issue. Their cover image was this Hanks exquisite painting "Beyond the Horizon."

The Pacific Ocean is one of my great loves, says Hanks. Its the ultimate edge. Image size: 17"w x 26"h. Edition Size:75 US: $595.00

When a child is learning a musical instrument, says Steve Hanks, its difficult for the student as well as their family to patiently endure the practice time. The presence of the cat in "Duet" shows that practice has paid off and now the music is so comforting that even the family cat will stay around to enjoy it.

My paintings of children are about my hopes and dreams for them, and about my desire to expose them to the arts: literature, art, music, dance and theater. I want to encourage them to make decisions for themselves, to stand on their own two feet, to think for themselves and to reach for their dreams. OPEN EDITION PRINT Image size: 7"w x 10"h. Waiting in the Rain MASTERWORK CANVAS EDITION

Image size: 26"w x 40"h. Edition Size:25 US: $1,250.00 Also Available As: LIMITED EDITION CANVAS Image size: 17"w x 26"h. Edition Size: 75 US: $595.00 After a period of personal loss, Steve Hanks began a series of paintings visualizing his healing process. This inspiring series, which can be found in its entirety in the book "Moving On: The Art of Steve Hanks," follows the artists emotional journey from despair to hope. "Waiting in the Rain" is one of the last paintings in the healing series.

At this point I had come out of my sadness. I began to think about the future. I thought about the kind of person I would want to come into my life, says Hanks. 'Waiting in the Rain' is the visualization of that person, someone supportive and faithful. We would all like to have someone waiting for us when we return from a

    trip.

Water is a challenge, says Steve Hanks. It adds a transparent, reflective layer over skin. The symbolism is quite different, though. Water has a cleansing quality. It can be seen as washing away the past and moving on.

Hanks has overcome the challenge of painting water in exquisite fashion in "Morning Bath." His understanding of the behavior of light on skin imbues the piece with a radiant elegance.

    Bewitching

LIMITED EDITION CANVAS Image size: 7 1/2"w x 12"h. Edition Size:150 US: $225.00 While in downtown Santa Barbara, California, Steve Hanks happened upon a Halloween parade. It really just fell into my lap, he says. Its a great thing to paint. Children in costume have become a favorite subject of mine because they wear them with such comfort and pride. I love their innocent unselfconsciousness.

"I believe that art can be more than just pretty pictures. Art should bring comfort to people. It should be by our side when we go through good times and hard times," says Steve Hanks. "Art should elicit a thought provoking examination of one's own life and

place in the world." "We all experience pain, but there are great moments of

pleasure all around us too. These moments may often be fleeting and get by us before we are able to fully comprehend their beauty and importance. I have tried to capture a few of these moments in paintings that can be savored for years to come." The beauty of this joyful moment is infectious. Steve Hanks has succeeded in capturing that perfect, uplifting energy in "To Dance Before the Sea and Sky."

  • To Touch a Heart LIMITED EDITION CANVAS Image size: 6"w x 9"h. Edition Size:150 US: $165.00

As the sunlight caresses her skin, the rapt subject of Steve Hanks' striking new portrait "To Touch a Heart" is carried away by the tide of her emotion. The dramatic light and posture exquisitely captures this singular private moment. "The nudes are basically the foundation of everything I paint," says the artist. "I return to paint nudes to sharpen up my ability to paint the figure."

    Listening to the River

    LIMITED EDITION PRINT Image size: 28"w x 18"h. Edition Size:350 US: $495.00

"I often paint women near the water," says artist Steve Hanks, "and each body of water has a different meaning, a different feeling." A painting of a woman in the ocean, for example, offers perspective and the sense that "your problems are no larger than a grain of sand." The subject of a lakeside portrait may be seeking solace and a sense of security. A river painting, however, is different. "A river is heading somewhere, it's got direction, "says Steve. "'Listening to the River' is about listening to the world you're in and waiting for its guidance. The woman is thinking about where she's headed." Steve Hanks' highly realistic watercolors reveal emotion through composition, color and lighting. His lyrical sensibility and unparalleled technical skill with watercolors have made him one of the most sought-after artists painting today.

New Shoreline LIMITED EDITION PRINT Image size: 18"w x 28"h. Edition Size:300 US: $450.

A woman stands in the shallow water, lost in contemplation. As the cool waves wash gently over her feet, she feels the warmth of the sun on her back and shoulders and is thankful for her surroundings, for the blessings in her life and for new beginnings. "New Shoreline," like all of Steve Hanks' work, is rich with layers of symbolism and meaning. His titles are often the key to understanding the deeper message waiting to be discovered in each painting, and they often have more than one meaning.

This young woman stands on a new shoreline that is unfamiliar and yet

it opens a new world of opportunities. Waves wash away the superficial layers of her past as she prepares herself for the many challenges and

possibilities the future offers. She stands ready on the "New Shoreline."

  • The mystery of what lies below the surface is one of waters most fascinating attractions. The same can be said of the paintings of Steve Hanks, where water and its presence have a nomenclature all their own.

Natures Touch LIMITED EDITION PRINT Image size: 26"w x 13 3/8"h. Edition Size:550 US: $175.00 Also Available As: LIMITED EDITION CANVAS Image size: 29"w x 15"h. Edition Size: 100 US: $550.00

Oceans are vast and we are small in comparison, says Hanks. When a painting occurs at seaside, often the subjects are contemplating significant passages in their lives. Rivers are on the move and going somewhere, as are the figures in these paintings. Lakes are most often environments of calm water and safety. Harmony is often the overriding theme.

Bathed in the glow of a warm sun, the woman in this

painting is connecting with nature and the uncomplicated joy of life. Poised and confident she dips her foot beneath the surface, an overture to exploring the unknown.

Throughout the history of art, great artists admired and then captured the human form on canvas. Steve Hanks' exquisite combination to this timeless art form is evidenced in his images.

My Little Angel LIMITED EDITION CANVAS Image size: 10"w x 11"h. Edition Size:300 US: $195.00

It is rare that I paint a piece with no background. Since there is no competition with the image, the angel, my daughter, appears to be floating within the white of the paper, says Hanks of his fine art limited edition "My Little Angel." The piece is about treasuring times when your kids are still young and innocent and like to dabble in make-believe. The colors are soft and subtle and create a feeling that the angel is gliding. A lovely way to revisit the charms of childhood.

  • Country Girls LIMITED EDITION CANVAS Image size: 16"w x 11"h. Edition Size:250 US: $250.00

'Country Girls' is simply about enjoying the times when your children are small, says Steve Hanks. Sometimes his pieces convey layers of meaning, this piece, however, in a smaller scale than Hanks usually paints, conveys the beauty of two tow-headed girls enjoying a moment outdoors in the country. In what could be Anytown, USA, Hanks captures an innocent time of pretending and the simple joys of childhood.

    From a Higher Level

LIMITED EDITION PRINT Image size: 24"w x 15 1/2"h. Edition Size:550 US: $175.00 Also Available As: LIMITED EDITION CANVAS Image size: 31"w x 20"h. Edition Size: 100 US: $695.00

The art of Steve Hanks is rich with symbolism and metaphor. His titles are a key to understanding the deeper message waiting to be discovered in each painting, and, often have more than one meaning. 'From a Higher Level' is, on one hand a relationship piece, and on the other, about the necessity of getting above the messiness of lifes daily grind. Simple but conscious acts can lift us out of the toil and finally place us on a higher ground, Hanks says. The piece is also about communication, and how the rider and horse converse without necessarily using words. The rider and horse can also represent the relationship between art and the ability of art to communicate beyond words 'From a Higher Level.'

  • Any healing process can be a lengthy one, says Steve Hanks. Often it can be helped by attempting to visualize the future." Such is the inspiration for "A New Beginning." This is, in fact, the final painting in a series of three that have used the ascent of the staircase to track this womans passage. By reaching the landing at the top, she has completed her growing process and is ready to move on. This staircase reminds us to take things in life one step at a time, that a promise of reward and satisfaction the top of the staircase and a new view of the world around you, is a situation you can help create for yourself.

A New Beginning LIMITED EDITION PRINT Image size: 14"w x 27 1/2"h. Edition Size:550 US: $175.00 Also Available As: MASTERWORK CANVAS EDITION Image size: 20"w x 40"h. Edition Size: 100 US: $850.00

In my paintings, when theres a sidewalk or shoreline going off into the distance, I sometimes use this area to represent people in the subjects mind. You may notice that in 'A New Beginning' that there are no people down the sidewalk, and that the background is left blank; the woman has visualized an open road in her future. Additionally, I used a different model for this painting than I did in the first two, to further illustrate the metamorphosis: you are not the same person at the top of the staircase that you were at the bottom.

"This painting is really about being young. I used strong, warm sunlight to convey the strength, promise and beauty of youth. At this time in her life, this woman is physically at her peak. I wanted the painting to celebrate the perfection of of the human figure and depict that this is, literally, her time to look good, feel great and choose from all of what life has to offer."

Having worked as long as I have and studied as much as I have, I'm more in tune with what the human form is capable of expressing and how subtle body positioning can convey a whole world of emotions. The human form is a complex study in patterns, lighting, layers, curves and structure of the anatomy. I will always be compelled to paint the figure."
