Introduction
What is water pollution?
• local, regional and global environmental problem
• caused by the direct discharge of pollutants into a waterway
• connected with air pollution and land uses
Reasons of water pollution
There are two main sources of water pollution:
-Sources of stream pollution
-Sources of marine pollution
Sources of stream pollution
• Livestock farms The pig and poultry farms in the New Territories produce a large amount of
manure everyday. Most of this manure is disposed into the streams with little treatment.
• Factories Dyeing and bleaching factories often discharge chemical wastes and metals
into the streams.
Sources of marine pollution • Factories Factories pollute the sea water by discharging the hot water loaded with toxic c
hemicals and metals into sea or pollute the soils on land which are then dumped into sea.
• Transport Oil spillage from ships occasionally contaminates the sea.
• Reclamation and excavation This reduce the rate of flow across the harbour and also reduces the dissolved
oxygen for the aquatic organisms.
• Domestic source
Human excretes are discharged into the sea.
Effects of water pollution
dangerous chemicals (e.g. oil get into the water)
↓fish take in the chemicals
↓when we eat the fish we also could get
sick↓
so this affects not only fish but humans too
acid rain↓
fish and plants will die↓
in a lake or pond, humans won't be able to swim in it
↓also pollutes the plants we eat
↓cause us to get sick
-Making people aware of the problem
-Teach them not to throw any kind of rubbish or toxic waste into harbor, sea, river, reservoir, etc.
- Told them not to throw any kind of rubbish or toxic waste down the drain or sewer, as the water (underground) will eventually enter the sea
How to solve water pollution
-Set up laws to stop the factories discharged pollutants
-Ask the convicts to pay penalties
-Send them to prison if they continuous to do that
-Collect polluted water and treat them again
-Built water channel to collect polluted water
-To stipulate the discharge of polluted water
Conclusion
Nowadays, water is being polluted more seriously. Some experts predict water instead of oil will be competed by the countries in the future. Therefore, we should save using the water and keep it clear.
