EvEry Drop of Saving CountS

The Annual General Meeting on 21 May came and went quite amicably and smoothly. Best of all, 540 members had taken valuable time off their personal schedule to turn up. You have paid heed to our call for attendance to provide the required quorum and help us approve important changes to the Club Rules that would benefit members, one of which is to increase the number of times in a week the same guests can be brought into the Club. The Club Rule changes you have approved will be implemented soon. I would like to say a very big “Thank you” to all.

The Management Committee, with the inclusion of a new member, Mr Michael Chia, will continue to introduce measures to turn around the Club’s endemic financial deficit. This is no easy task as we have to seek innovative ways to improve revenue and reduce costs while striving to keep the Club running efficiently and making it a livelier place for all members to enjoy.

Here is one way members can do their part to help us trim costs—by conserving water when at the Club.

From 1 July, for the first time in 17 years, water price will increase by 30% in two phases. While the impending rise in monthly water bills, an average of less than $18 for three-quarters of households in Singapore, may hardly impact most, if not all, our members, the Club’s water expenses is expected to see a significant upsurge.

In the last Financial Year, the Club had paid about $228,000 or $19,000 a month for water use. With the price hike, ceteris paribus, and if we do nothing, this amount is expected to go up to almost $300,000 a year or about $25,000 every month. It will be a hefty expense that adds a heavy burden to our current financial situation.

To mitigate these costs, we have looked into several water-saving measures such as reducing the frequency of backwashing the swimming pools’ filters without compromising water quality while still complying with NEA’s Environmental Public Health (Swimming Pools) Regulations. At the same time, we are considering a rainwater collection system to harvest it for washing and watering plants.

I urge everyone, in the spirit of a big family, to collectively reduce water wastage. This is your club and your efforts in water saving do matter. The Communications Department is running a publicity programme to provide various water-saving tips. You can check out the useful suggestions on the facing page and on posters that we have put up at strategic locations in the Club.

Every drop of water saved counts.

StriKE goLD!

In this issue of SPLASH, we feature nine of our young swimmers who bagged gold at the 48th Singapore National Age Group Swimming Championships. Of these nine medallists, Lauren Chew, Faith Khoo, Ashley Lim and Sarah Yip broke the national under-14 record in the 400m medley relay event. Kudos to our young swim stars who have been unrelenting in the pursuit of their goals. Equally uncompromising have been their coaches who often brave the rain just to continue with training until the lightning siren is sounded. It takes the steadfast and combined commitment of our dedicated coaches, supportive parents and motivated swimmers to strike gold.

Although the gold medals the swimmers received are not made of pure gold, they are not fool’s gold either. The gold medals, whether spray-painted or plated, recognise the highest standard achieved in the event. The ancient Greeks were wise in using a crown of laurels to acknowledge champions—a foliage that would wither so that winners would not rest on their laurels. The best is yet to be if one continues to strive for excellence.

A member lamented she had paid $28,000 for her Club membership15 years ago and that it is worth only $14,000 at present. She asked: “Where’s the value?” Many of us would remember that during the early days, club membership was one of the most sought-after status symbols and one of the must-have 5Cs. Those were the days when the display of multiple club car decals was a measure of how successful the owners were perceived to be and sales of membership transfers were fast and furious. Unfortunately, that halcyon era is over.

If you had not made a profit from the sale of club membership in that era, would you still have struck gold? I suppose like our swimmers, you would have known what you had gone into when you took the plunge to buy the membership. In my opinion, you are still striking gold if you make the most out of your membership. Besides using the Club’s facilities and dining at the F&B outlets, you would have definitely played an active role in shaping the values of this family club over the years and upheld the tenets of socially acceptable behaviour in the Club. You would have also played a part in setting examples for the next generation to emulate, and that is no fool’s gold. Even if you are a part of the silent majority supporting the Club in your own ways, you too can be proud of your contributions and unwavering support.

Over the years, you might have established everlasting friendships with fellow members and felt that the Club is your second home where you can comfortably leave your children to train, learn and socialise in. That too is worth much more than gold. As with any organisation, there will always be people who are individualistic as well as those who think that because they are members who pay subscription fees, they are de facto owners of the Club and can therefore subject staff to servitude. There are others who demand that activities and events be planned to suit their schedules and no one else’s. This is very anti-Club attitude. If we extend our care and respect to one another regardless of whether they are members or staff like our coaches and families of the swimmers who have done for our winning team, everyone can win big time and better than gold, I would say.

Mediacorp recently filmed episodes of Season 2 of its hit series “Lion Moms” at our Competition Pool.

Lion Moms is a drama that centres around the lives of three Singaporean mothers and their children, set against the backdrop of the country’s highly competitive education system. The scenes filmed at the Club mainly revolve around one of the mothers, played by famous Hong Kong actress Bernice Liu (廖碧儿), who pushes her daughter to train as a competitive swimmer as an insurance for a place in a good secondary school via the Direct School Admission scheme.

Lion Moms 2 will air on Channel 5 in August.
