WASTEWATER TREATMENT WHAT? New Hospital Herlev is con- structing a new wastewater treatment plant that will ensure that hospital waste- water is handled in accord- ance to the Environmental Protection Act’s regulations. The project is designed as a private-public innovation partnership. WHY? Hospital wastewater is characterised by a complex mixture of hazardous phar- maceuticals, harmful patho- gens and antibiotic resistant bacteria. These cannot be removed by conventional means of wastewater treat- ment. WHO? The private project partners consist of Grundfos Bio- Booster as project holder, DHI for testing and docu- mentation, Ultraaqua as a specialist in carbon, ozone and UV light and Neutralox for odour control. Herlev Hospital will build and own the wastewater treatment plant. EXPECTED RESULTS: • Construction of full-scale pilot wasterwater treat- ment plant • Evaluation of robustness, cost of operation and treatment performance in order to help define best available technique • Demonstration that air emissions can be treated for pathogens and odours • Demonstration that the by-products can be dis- posed of in an environ- mentally sound matter • Developing a control method to detect when granular activated carbon filters are saturated in order to optimize replace- ment intervals.
