WaterQualityProtectors!

Welcome to WITtec 2020 We hope you

will plan to join us over the 3-day WITtec conference as it continues what’s Hot in Wastewater Treatment - and find a session of interest to you. Monday 3/30/2020 is an In-

dustrial session from 1-5 pm featuring, new

technologies in pollution prevention methods to directly reduce impact on wastewater treat-ment and a Sampling Class. Tuesday 3/31/2020 offers four all-day technical courses, Exhibits will open at 9:00 am Tuesday and run till Wednesday at 3:20 pm. As is customary, on Wednesday 4/1/2020 we offer the concurrent sessions (Industrial or Municipal Industrial Pretreatment), in which attendees may choose any topic of interest in either session. Also, the exhibits are open 8:00 am-3:20 pm. Operators can earn 21 hours at WITtec most of which are technical with respect to wastewater treatment. We would like to thank our exhibitors, speakers, volunteers and attendees for making WITtec the place where Water Quality Protectors meet. And thank you for choosing WITtec for your choice of wastewater education opportunities. On Tuesday 4:30—6:00 pm we have a meet n greet in the Exhibit Hall you are invited to attend. Our Keynote address will be presented on Wednesday April 1 at 10:20 AM by Al Goodman, CDM Smith. Al will take us on a 25 Year look back at Industrial Wastewater Treatment and what we can expect in Future Trends. A reprint of the Association article appearing in TPO Magazine is on page 19.

IWEA Welcomes Attendees Greetings and welcome to WITtec 2020 from the IWEA Pretreatment Com-mittee. Through collabora-tion and knowledge sharing, WITtec provides a forum for connecting people with information. As you enjoy this year’s conference, take to time to ask questions and interact with your fellow professionals. You may believe that your issues and challenges are uniquely yours, but more likely than not, someone attending this conference is facing something similar. Learn, grow, and collaborate.

As you think about this year’s theme and participate in the many technical sessions, continue to seek opportunities to learn about reducing, eliminating, or preventing pollution. Encourage thinking about things in a new way rather than how it’s always been done.

In addition to the Pretreatment sessions we will be offering the Registered Pretreatment Coordinator course on Tues-day, March 31. The newly updated course provides a good foundation for those new to Industrial Pretreatment and a good refresher for those who have had previous experience.

Treatment

and Future Trends

Mr. Al Goodman, P.E., WEF Fellow, Principal CDM Smith, will present a 25-Year Review of Industrial Wastewater Treatment and Future Trends.

Based out of CDM Smith’s Louisville, Ken-tucky office, Goodman has built a sustainable career in the wastewater treatment industry. As an internationally recognized water and wastewater expert with a focus on large water reuse industrial treatment projects, he has brought invaluable experience to numerous in-dustrial and food and beverage projects compris-ing design, plant operations, industrial treatment, operator training and troubleshooting and litiga-tion support.

Goodman is a professional engineer in three states, a certified industrial plant operator, and has delivered more than 200 presentations on water-related topics to local, state, national and international organizations. Al is a tremendous asset to the industry and serves on the IIOA Board of Directors and provides guidance on the IDEM Operator workgroup. Prior to joining CDM Smith in 2006, Goodman was founder and CEO of his own environmental consulting firm for 20 years. He is a past president of WEF and the Indiana Water Environment Association. He has also chaired more than 14 wastewater and environmental committees.

associated with spills and other wastewater events and

their responsibili es.  The presenta on will focus on a

Amy Harvell graduated from Purdue University with a B.S. in Natural Resources and Environmental Sci-ence. Amy became a Certified Hazardous Materials Manger and a Registered Pretreatment Coordinator. Amy works for Wessler Engineering as an Environ-mental Services Senior Project Manager and has worked in the environmental field for over 20 years with experience in air, stormwater, wastewater, and waste permitting and management for industrial fa-cilities; wellhead protection planning, MS4 imple-mentation, pretreatment programs, various Clean Water Act permits, and spill prevention control and countermeasures planning for municipalities and industries.

Sustainable Industrial Practice and Water Treatment 2020 and Beyond

Monday in Pollu on Preven on Session  1:00 pm

Sustainable industrial practice as it pertains to Surface Finish-ing (SF), General Metal Finishing (GMF), and the treatment of water therein is now a primary objective. The industrial future focus is a merger of ecology and economy which will directly impact manufacturing into the next decade. Economics of tech-nology, environmental focus, and viable alternatives to current methods are discussed in this presentation. Mark E. Andrus currently serves as the Global Business Man-ager for Coventya Inc. - WaterCare Division. Mark received a Bachelor of Science Biology/Chemistry from Baldwin-Wallace College, Berea, Ohio, in 1980.

Mark has worked in environmental pollution control and indus-trial water treatment for over 40 years His primary expertise: Wastewater, Boiler Water, and Cooling Water.

Industrial Waste Water Treatment: The Laboratory, the Classroom, and in the field. Monday in Pollu on Preven on Session  3:00 pm This session provides the students with a comprehensive technical discussion that explains the critical nature each of the following topics as they pertain to Wastewater Treatment (The laboratory, the Classroom, and in the field). This discussion covers topics such as phosphorus removal/precipitation, jar testing, chemical dosing, setting up and operating a Wastewater Laboratory, heavy metals precipitation, and regulatory reporting.

Justin Niles manages the Wastewater Treatment Divi-sion for Mac Lellan Integrated Services. He currently su-pervises 16 Indiana based Operators that are responsible for three Class “D” Wastewater Treatment facilities. Justin holds Indiana Class “D” and Class “4” operators licenses. His formal education focused on chemistry and mathe-matics. Justin serves on the IIOA Board of Directors. [email protected] Subaru of Indiana Automotive Services

Jim Collins, Brenntag - DAF Operation of Solids and Paint Waste Monday in Pollu on Preven on Session  4:00 pm

Wastewater with high concentrations of BOD will be re-viewed. Screening of heavy solids prior to chemical/physical separation is an integral step in the wastewater treatment process. Paint solids from painting operations include neutralization, pH adjustment, coagulation, heavy metals precipitation, flocculation and clarification.

PREVIEW

New Phosphorus Limit in Indiana. Are manufacturers ready? Tuesday in Hot Topics - 8 am

Some industrial users have been surprised by their water permit renewal letters that included phospho-rus limits as low as 1 mg/L. This will be the case for other industrial users in midwestern states due to a regional response to the excessive loads of nu-trients impacting local waterways and ultimately being delivered to the Gulf of Mexico. Our presen-tation will focus on:

The basics of phosphorus removal

Why it’s trending

How organically-bound phosphorus is an issue as it’s chelated after metal washing applications

Some POTW’s won’t allow surcharges

New permits range

Mike Quandahl is a Regional Manager with DMP Corporation covering 13 Midwest US states. Mike holds a Mechanical Engineering de-gree from Lawrence Technological Universi-ty. Mike has over 30 years of experience in indus-trial wastewater treatment in multiple industries, including metal finishing, aerospace, electronics and automotive. Mike has been involved in the evaluation, sale and implementation of numerous projects to achieve compliance with local discharge limitations, wastewater reuse and ZLD. His experi-ence with surveying and evaluating hundreds of facilities brings valuable insight and problem-solving skills to each new client.
