Home Away From Home By Charlie Dennard Aahhhh... Namba... Home sweet home! Or so it seemed to me each day when I walked through the Namba Walk or stepped into the Namba Oriental Hotel over the last 3 months (yeah, RIGHT!). Although I think that Osaka has been my favorite city so far in Japan, I must confess that I am really looking forward to moving on and going back to Tokyo for our grande finale! Osaka was a long, hot, and crowded city that everyone expected to be the most difficult, but instead I found it to be one of the most exciting, fun, and easy cities of our tour. It kind of reminded me of my other home away from home back in New Orleans mainly because of the humidity but also because of a few jazz music clubs that I found as well as the good food and friendly people. About 10 years ago I moved to New Orleans to study music at the University of New Orleans and ended up falling in love with the city and it's music, food, and culture. It was there where I first met some of the Alegria musicians who were coming over from Biloxi on their days off. Unfortunately the entire highway from New Orleans to Biloxi has now been destroyed and several hundred thousand people have had their lives turned upside down because of Hurricane Katrina. I guess that I've gotten used to being sort of `homeless' while on tour these last 3 years, but now it has an even greater meaning because the one place that I could've called home is in shambles and basically no longer exists.... Aahhhh...

Home Away From Home (continued from page 1)

Of course there have been a few places on tour that I hope I never see again but there have been many more

that I would love to visit over and over. I have to constantly remind myself that we are living a life that most people only

dream of ever seeing. Maybe we don't realize how good something is until it is taken away from us (like New Orleans or

Biloxi). I know many people on tour who loved the peace and tranquility of Biloxi and said that they had some of the best

(and craziest) times of their lives in New Orleans during Mardi Gras or the Jazz Festival.

So, home is where I lay my head. Like a rolling stone... Home is where the heart is, and I could feel the heart

and soul of Osaka thumping through its pachinko machines and back alleys filled with octopus balls on a stick and out in

the beautiful surrounding areas of Kyoto and Nara and more... Hopefully we can always have a sense of where we come

from and where we are going but most importantly may we always try to enjoy the present and make the best of every

situation especially when we're away from home.

(A lot more than) 60 Seconds with Mikev...b y Charles Dennard

I've had the privilege of spending a lot more than 60 seconds with Michael Newnum over the past 2 and a half years here at Alegria and most of the time I can honestly say that IT SUCKED!!! No, I'm just kidding Mikey... Of course it didn't. He has become one of my closest friends and it makes me sad to say that he will be leaving us to become a (hopefully better) swing technician at Corteo this city. So, in a nutshell, here's a few parting words from the little chipmunk himself regarding life and the pursuit of happiness...

CD: So, what's it like to be a professional "Swinger"? MN: Ha ha... It's a good time! The day never gets boring that's for sure.

CD: How often do you shave that thing? MN: (As he smiles and strokes his beard) Whenever I look in the mirror and scare myself.

CD: How many drinks does it take before you puke on the subway train (with your Cirque jacket on)? MN: It depends on if I've eaten or not...

CD: Are you speaking from experience? MN: Maybe....

CD: What's something that you would do if you were the stage manager for one day? MN: Turn up the AC in the big top!

CD: You seem to have a lot of friends in every city on tour don't you? MN: Yea, all but one so far (Portland).

(Mikey was part of a suspicious cult-like organization called "Up With People" that is rumored to have infiltrated the mass population in a effort to take over civilization)

CD: Why are you here? MN: Where else can you get to travel around the world with people from all over the world?

CD: How did you get here? MN: Heather Riley recommended me and I had already applied for a job at Quidam as a sound technician.

CD: What is your motto in life? MN: If you truly love what you are doing, you'll never have to work another day in your life.

CD: What is the strangest thing to ever happen to you at Alegria? MN: My first night in Austin I had no key so I had to go to Peter DeBay's birthday/pool party to get it from him and ended up staying there drinking until the wee hours of the morning while my luggage was still sitting in the parking lot!!!

CD: Where will you be in 5-10 years? MN: Hopefully getting lost somewhere in my jeep...

CD: Who's your favorite musician or singer in Alegria? MN: Charlie Dennard without a doubt! CD: That's what I thought...

Well Mikey, it's been great. The pressure, I mean pleasure, has been all ours to say the least. You've come a long way from the American mid-West (Iowa) and on behalf of all of us here at Alegria I would like to wish you the best in your continued success. May you keep on loving what you do so you can continue not to work so hard in the future...

Peace,

Charlie Dennard

Justine:

We started the tour in Tokyo,

Every morning we took the train,

At Akihabara, they sell cool stuff.

At Shibuya station it's very noisy.

Harajuku girls just sittin' aroung,

And we took samples of yummy yummy bread

And this is how you spell Tokyo

Anastasia:

We are now in Osaka

And it's humid and hot

It's raining every day

That it never stops

There's lots of things to do

And lots of things to see

And lots of things to see

Playing in the park

Is fine for me

Universal Studios__

Is in Osaka

Interesting rides

That I've never been on

Chorus Artur :

To Fukuoka we arrived

And the big earthquake we survived

I thought it was ironic

While everyone did panic

The weather was horrible

But the ocean was adorable

Everything had a nice price

Even the sushi with the rice!!

Chorus

Natasha:

We were in Nagoya

And we saw lot's of stuff

We saw the expo

We saw playgrounds

We also saw the aquarium

In Nagoya was very fun

We learned lot's of stuff

N-A-G-O-Y-A - yeh- yell

Chorus

So that's my rap about Osaka

Now you know how Osaka is

Chorus Ilona:

Japan, Japan, Japan!

Fashionable, exciting, cultural, historic

Japan, Japan, Japan!

Beautiful, relaxing, safe and nostalgic

We're staying here for 14 months,

And taking the 4 city's paths

So, Tokyo, Fukuoka, Nagoya,

Osaka , encore Tokyo. Yeah!

Japan costs a lot of money,

Living here is not funny.

People here are very nice,

Who sure do eat a lot of rice.

Grab some green tea and yummy sushi,

And have a go to see Mount Fuji.

There's lots of things to see and do,

Like sumo wrestling and Alegria 2.

This is my rap about Japan,

Of which the lifestyle is modern-urban!

Once upon a time, on a small island in the middle of the ocean, there used to live a cat, a fish, and a mouse. That was a wonderful island. Everything was there. They didn't need to worry about food, because the island had enough fruits and vegetables. There, animals lived together. Fish was a boy. He was very clever. Cat was a girl. She was very pretty. And she had a passion for fish. Mouse was a boy too. He was very mad. In winter, cat and fish fell in love. They lived very happy together. But the weather was getting colder and colder. Everything died. They were hungry. But they couldn't find anything to eat. Then fish said to cat, "I want I die. Then you can eat me!" Cat said, "No, I could never do that!" At that moment, mouse heard this. Then he killed fish. After that, he took some fish meat, and ran away. Cat was very sad, and angry. She ate fish's bones. And she thought," I need to stay alive. So I'll kill mouse!"

That is why cats hunt mice!
