Tech Center News VOL. 40 NO. 38 MAY 23, 2016 Covers the Tech Center and the Immediate Area WARREN, MICHIGAN [email protected] The best way to handle a prob- lem is to handle the situation be- fore it becomes a problem. And that’s the service Chevrolet is of- fering to its customers, said GM spokesman Monte Doran. Chevrolet is introducing the industry’s first predictive tech- nology, enabling a vehicle to warn you about a potential main- tenance need before it occurs, Doran said. The technology is similar in concept to that on the Boeing 787, which can send in-flight messages to ground crews alert- ing them of parts needing inspec- tion before the plane arrives. For Chevrolet drivers who opt in to the service, OnStar Proac- tive Alerts continually monitors the health of the vehicle’s starter motor, fuel pump and 12-volt bat- tery. If anomalies are detected, OnStar will notify drivers to take their vehicle in for service, re- ducing unexpected repairs. The service is available now for OnStar subscribers who own a 2016 Chevy Silverado, Tahoe, Suburban, Corvette or Equinox, Doran said. “Chevrolet is already the most awarded car brand in the indus- try, and Silverado is the most de- pendable, longest-lasting, full- size pickup on the road,” said Steve Holland, chief technologist for Vehicle Health Management at General Motors. “With Proactive Alerts, we now can offer customers even greater peace of mind by taking the guesswork out of when to serv- ice their vehicle.” Proactive Alerts collects a small batch of data each time the vehicle is started, and monitors it on an ongoing basis, Holland said. Then, sophisticated sys- tems analyze and refine billions of pieces of data, accumulated across the fleet of vehicles. If the data indicates a particu- lar vehicle’s component is not performing as expected, Holland said the system will automatical- ly send the driver a message through an in-vehicle notifica- tion, and either an email or text message based on customer pref- erence. “Accuracy is the key to our pre- diction algorithms,” Holland said. “We will be able to inform dealer service departments so they can spend less time testing for a con- dition we have already diag- nosed. (AP) – For Detroit, the days of simply mak- ing cars are over. Automakers are facing multi- ple threats to their business from nimble tech firms like Apple and Uber. In response, carmakers are reinventing themselves as “mo- bility’’ companies that can ac- commodate all the different ways people get around. Already this year, General Mo- tors Co. has announced a long- term alliance with ride-hailing company Lyft and started a car- sharing service called Maven. Ford created a technology- focused division based in Silicon Valley that will invest in promis- ing transportation startups. It also launched FordPass, a smartphone app that helps users find parking or share their cars. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles is partnering with Google to test self-driving software in 100 of its minivans. In congested and expensive cities, people are increasingly content to share cars or summon rides using their smartphones. In five years, 35 million people glob- ally will be using car-sharing services, up from 5.8 million now, according to Boston Consulting Group. That means 550,000 fewer cars sold each year. Within another few decades, fleets of self-driving taxis could replace the need for personal car ownership altogether. Automak- ers that don’t adapt risk being supplanted by high-tech com- petitors. “We’re investing in future- proofing,’’ says Elena Ford, who led the development of FordPass and is the great-great- granddaughter of Ford’s founder. There are dangers. Making ve- hicles is complicated and expen- sive, and car companies have stumbled when they’ve taken on new businesses. GM bought soft- ware maker Electronic Data Sys- tems Inc. in 1984 but sold it 12 years later. Ford owned Hertz rental cars but sold it a decade ago. Chrysler owned airplane- maker Gulfstream in the mid- 1980s. In each case, the compa- nies sold those businesses to re- focus on car-making. There’s also the open question of whether drivers want auto- makers to do more than make cars. Ford CEO Mark Fields is confident they do. “It goes back to Henry Ford and one of his favorite quotes: ‘If I asked people what they wanted, they’d say they wanted a faster horse,’” Fields told The Associat- ed Press. “We want to transform, fundamentally, the relationship between an automaker and a cus- tomer.” Fields adds that the financial case is too compelling to ignore. Global revenue at traditional automakers totals $2.3 trillion a year, he says; the transportation business, including taxis, buses and car-sharing, is worth $5.4 trillion. They say that history repeatsitself, and in the case of the Wal-ter P. Chrysler Automotive Muse-um, that’s literally true. The museum is, as of June 4,

open to the public, said BrandtRosenbusch, manager of Histori-cal Services for Fiat ChryslerAutomobiles.“We officially closed the muse-

um to the public on Dec. 31,2012,” Rosenbusch said. “It wasvery expensive to keep a full mu-seum staff as well as keeping theplace up and running six days aweek.“And there were also the mar-

keting costs. The museum justwasn’t financially viable.”And, Rosenbusch said, the mu-

seum is not a charity. It has topay for itself. So what happenedbetween the beginning of 2013and now?“We have, since 2012, been able

to turn the museum site into asuccessful event and businesscenter,” Rosenbusch said. “So thesite has become self-sustaining.“We hold a lot of corporate

meetings that we couldn’t do be-fore.“After all, you can’t show Pow-

erpoints that contain proprietaryinformation when you havemembers of the public walkingaround.”Once the museum site became

self-sustaining, Rosenbusch andothers realized that there wasa lot of pent-up demand touse the site as it was originallyintended – as a museum.

So on the weekend of June 4and 5, the Walter P. Chrysler Mu-seum will again be open to thepublic, Rosenbusch said.“The decision to reopen the

museum to the public was madeearlier this year,” Rosenbuschsaid.“A small staff will be dedicated

to the museum.“But the main reason we are

able to do this is because of thevolunteers who are being gener-ous with their time. We can relyon these excellent and dedicatedpeople who make up our volun-teer force.“Many of them are former

Chrysler employees who, as tourguides, are happy to dispensetheir knowledge.“And we now even have a dedi-

cated crew that is able to help uswith the maintenance of our carcollection.”Rosenbusch said the muse-

um’s car collection is relativelysmall as these things go, withabout 300 vehicles in the inven-tory.“We keep about 60 to 65 vehi-

cles on display at any one time,”Rosenbusch said.“We try to rotate the vehicles

in our basement to keep the dis-play fresh.”Rosenbusch said there is a

basement display where they areable to mix and match vehiclesfor different themes. One display might be about

the history of Mopar. Anothermight be about Chrysler’s mus-cle car tradition. These displays are easily

changed. The vehicles ondisplay at the museum’s maintwo above-ground floors areharder to change because thedisplays are dedicated to thechronological history ofChrysler. One interesting basement dis-

play, Rosenbusch said, is dedi-cated to Chrysler’s efforts to sellto female drivers in the early1950s.“It’s a funny story involving

pink cars,” Rosenbusch said.“In 1954, Chrysler built a pink

La Comtess concept car for theauto show circuit. It was basedon the then current New Yorkerplatform. It was pink.It had special interior cloth

meant to please women. It wasso successful that Dodge cameout with the La Femme model. Itwas pink, and came with match-ing make-up cases, umbrellasand a rose-colored floral patternin the interior. The vehicle wasbased on Dodge’s Royal platformand sold for two years – 1955 and1956.”The La Femme was not suc-

cessful, Rosenbusch said. Specu-lation at the time was that in this

time period many families werestill one-car households and thatmen didn’t want to drive a pinkcar with a rose-colored floral in-terior.And if a family were a two-car

household, the second car wouldbe more practical – somethinglike a station wagon.A woman at the museum who

heard Rosenbusch tell the storysaid that perhaps the La Femmefailed because even in the 1950swomen knew when they werebeing condescended to. And,they also didn’t want to be seendriving a car that was designedby men around very stereo-typed ideas of what women want-ed.The Walter P. Chrysler Muse-

um will be open two weekends amonth June 4-Dec. 17 this year.A special preview weekend on

May 14-15 was open to FiatChrysler employees and theirfamilies.Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Cost

is $10 for adults, $8 for retiredFiat Chrysler employees andsenior citizens, $6 for kids 6-17.Children five and under arefree.

The new 2017 Camaro looksfast. But it’s the vehicle’s newtransmission, not its exteriordesign, that really makes theCamaro go fast. With faster upshifts than a

dual-clutch transmission and awider overall gear ratio spread tooptimize performance and effi-ciency, the new available Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic trans-mission sets a new performancestandard in the 2017 Camaro ZL1– and raises the bar for the seg-ment, said GM spokesman TomRead. The ZL1 is expected to be the

first volume production car tooffer a 10-speed automatic, Readsaid. It builds on the establishedlegacy of the Hydra-Matic eight-speed transmission familyoffered on other Gen Six Camaromodels, to deliver higher thresh-olds of capability and efficiency.“There is simply nothing like

the experience offered with thenew 10-speed automatic in theCamaro ZL1,” said Aaron Link,ZL1 lead development engineer.“It delivers nearly instantaneous,lightning-fast shifts that alteryour perception of what an auto-matic transmission can offer in ahigh-performance vehicle –whether you’re on the street, drag strip or road course.”The greater overall perform-

ance and efficiency, Link said, aredue primarily to the 10-speed’swider 7.39 overall gear ratiospread, which enhances off-the-line performance with an aggres-sive first gear ratio of 4.70. Small-er steps between the gears alsohelp the engine maintain the op-timal speed for maximum powerat almost all vehicle speeds.“The gear ratios are so tightly

spaced that the transmission isin the right gear and the engine is

at the best rpm for transitionsfrom corners to straights,” saidLink. “And with the power fromthe ZL1’s supercharged LT4 en-gine, the force you feel in yourseat as you accelerate out of aturn will put a grin on your faceevery time.”Chevrolet testing has shown

the ZL1 with the available 10-speed has faster shift times thanthe Porsche PDK dual-clutchtransmission, Link said. In fact, the 1-2 upshift is 36 percentquicker than the PDK, while the2-3 and 3-4 upshifts are 27 per-cent and 26 percent quicker, re-spectively.“You touch the paddle and the

gear changes with immediacy,”said Link. “The shifts happen soquickly and without delay that italmost feels like an extension ofyour reflexes. It’s a much moreinvolving experience for the driv-er that really helps improve con-fidence and performance on thetrack.”Hundreds of hours were spent

integrating the 10-speed’s shiftperformance with the uniquepower band of the ZL1’s super-charged 6.2L LT4 engine, which isestimated at 640 horsepower and640 lb.-ft. of torque, Link said. The 10-speed also has a nu-

merically lower top gear ratiothan Camaro’s eight-speed auto-matics, which allows the engine

to run at a lower speed on thehighway, enabling even greaterefficiency.GM was able to achieve this

performance, Link said, throughcreative packaging solutions. They allowed GM to accommo-date another clutch in compari-son with the eight-speed, allow-ing the 10-speed to be the ap-proximate size of Camaro’s othereight-speed transmission. It usesfour simple gearsets and sixclutches: two brake clutches andfour rotating clutches, Link said. That’s only one more clutch thanthe eight-speed, despite havingtwo more forward gears. It is also the latest transmis-

sion with a new, proprietary elec-tronic control system and per-formance calibrations. The calibration is unique for

the ZL1’s high-performance-oriented driving experience, while additional applications willfeature calibrations matched totheir respective performanceranges.Additional highlights include:

• A reduction in spin losses, thanks to only two non-appliedclutches and other design fea-tures, contributes to greater fuelefficiency.• New ultra-low viscosity

transmission fluid reduces fric-tion across the full temperatureoperating range for greater fuelefficiency.• An internal thermal bypass

allows the transmission to warmup faster to its optimal operatingtemperature for additional fuelefficiency and its advancedtorque converter design con-tributes to packaging efficiency. The 10-speed will be produced

with a new manufacturing sys-tem at GM’s propulsion manufac-turing facility in Romulus, Readsaid. It’s part of a $323-million in-vestment in the facility.

DETROIT (AP) – A change inpollution control hardwarebetween model years cut thegas mileage on some GeneralMotors SUVs and forced it tocorrect the figures on windowstickers, the company said May18.GM announced the previous

week that the fuel economy wasoverstated by one-to-two milesper gallon on the 2016 GMC Aca-dia, Chevrolet Traverse andBuick Enclave. But Consumer Reports maga-

zine questioned why the 2016mileage would be worse than the2015 models when little waschanged between model yearsand the SUVs from each year had

the same engines and transmis-sions.GM spokesman Nick Richards

said May 18 he doesn’t knowwhy the pollution hardware waschanged. But he said the SUVs fromall model years comply with cleanair laws. The mileage was recalcu-lated for 2016 but never made itonto the window stickers, he said. The mistake was discovered

recently by engineers who wereworking on the 2017 model stick-ers. The company said the mis-take was inadvertent and that itinformed the U.S. EPA.GM now is in the process of

tracking down 170,000 owners of2016 models to give them newstickers, Richards said.

Sometimes it’s the little thingsthat really add up to great per-formance. Take a sport car’swheels, for instance. The carbon-fiber-bodied Ford

GT will also offer a new carbon-fiber wheel, further improvingthe drive and handling character-istics of Ford’s new supercar, said Ford spokesman MattLeaver.Ford GT is the second Ford

Performance vehicle to offer car-bon fiber wheels – following theworld’s first mass-produced car-bon fiber wheel application thatdebuted as standard equipmenton the 2015 Shelby GT350R Mus-tang, Leaver said.“Ford was the innovator as the

first to offer mass-produced car-bon fiber wheels as a standardoffering on Shelby GT350R Mus-tang,” said Dave Pericak, FordPerformance global director.“Now, Ford GT will offer the

next generation in carbon fiberwheels, with an advanced resinand fiber technology that givesour designers more freedom, while also showcasing the struc-ture of the material’s weave.”Unlike the Shelby GT350R’s

black-painted carbon fiberwheels, Pericak said Ford GTwheels will be offered in two fin-ishes – either a matte or a glossyclearcoat, permitting the stun-ning nature of the carbon fiberweave to show through. The finishes perfectly match

the two exposed carbon finishesavailable on the sills, fascia andextractor of the new supercar,Pericak said.Working with supplier partner

Carbon Revolution, Pericak saidthe new wheels are constructedwith the latest generation of fiberand resin technology that per-mits greater design flexibility –resulting in flowing, more intri-cate spokes.Carbon fiber wheels bring a

wealth of advantages over tradi-tional aluminum wheels, Pericaksaid, including weight savings, improved vehicle dynamics andride quality - making the innova-tive material the perfect comple-ment for the new Ford GT.Beyond simply reducing over-

all vehicle weight for improvedacceleration, braking and dynam-ic performance, carbon fiber’s in-credibly strong, light naturemeans a reduction in unsprungweight and rotational inertia, which benefits suspension ac-tion, ride quality and dynamicperformance, Pericak said. The Ford GT arrives standard

with light, supercar-spec, 10-spoke forged aluminum wheels,sized 8.5 x 20 in./front, and 11.5 x20 in./rear, Pericak said.The optional carbon fiber

wheels on the Ford GT are thesame size, but are structurallystiffer, and save more than twopounds of unsprung weight perwheel.Compared to the already feath-

erweight standard wheels, thisweight savings reduces inertia bya notable 25 percent, Pericaksaid.A lighter wheel requires the

suspension to do less work tocontrol the hardware attached toit, and improves consistent con-tact with the road surface, im-proving traction and driver con-trol, Pericak said. Each spinning wheel also acts

like a gyroscope, so a lighterwheel can improve steering feeland dynamics as it requires lessenergy to accelerate or turn thewheels, improving vehicle re-sponse.Vehicle efficiency is improved

as less energy is required to getthe wheel spinning. While metal wheels can act like

a bell, Pericak said the dense, in-ert nature of carbon fiber pro-vides for overall improved per-

formance in terms of noise, vi-bration and harshness (NVH)and a quieter ride – leading togreater comfort and refinementfor the vehicle.“With optional carbon fiber

wheels providing benefits in keyareas – weight savings, vehicledynamics, NVH and ride quality –they are the perfect, innovativecomplement for the all-new FordGT,” Pericak said. For more information visit

DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) – AAAMichigan says gas pricesstatewide have risen by about 5cents a gallon in the past week. The Dearborn-based auto club

said as of May 15 the averageprice for self-serve regular un-leaded gasoline was about $2.26per gallon. That’s about 36 centsless than it was at the samepoint last year. The lowest average price was

about $2.24 per gallon in theFlint area, while the highest aver-age was about $2.28 per gallon inthe Ann Arbor area.AAA Michigan surveys daily

fuel prices at 2,800 gas stationsacross the state.

YOKOHAMA, Japan (AP) – Nis-san Chief Executive CarlosGhosn is confident a 237 billionyen ($2.2 billion) investment in acontrolling stake in scandal-em-broiled Mitsubishi Motors willprove a bargain when sheer sizeis critical in the auto industry.Japanese transport ministry

officials raided Mitsubishi Mo-tors Corp.’s Tokyo headquartersMay 13, as part of an investiga-tion into inflated fuel-economydata for several models.Ghosn was careful to stress

the acquisition won’t become fi-nal until he sees the outcome ofthe Japanese regulators’ investi-gation, such as the scale of thefraud, whether overseas marketsare affected and what the penal-ties might be.But scale is critical for devel-

oping expensive technologysuch as low-emissions vehiclesand autonomous driving. So isthe advantage of being in variousmarkets to balance ups anddowns in regional growth, hesaid.“If you are small, you are going

to be vulnerable,” Ghosn told re-porters at Nissan Motor Co.’sYokohama headquarters May 13,a day after he announced theagreement.Ghosn acknowledged he

grabbed at an opportunity asMitsubishi shares nose-dived af-ter the latest scandal surfaced.Mitsubishi’s shares fell 43 per-

cent between April 19 – the daybefore it announced the fueleconomy scandal – and May 11.The stock cost 565 yen ($5.20)May 13, down 1.7 percent follow-

ing a surge on the deal’s news.Gaining Mitsubishi adds about

900,000 in annual vehicle sales tothe Nissan-Renault alliance, which already is the fourth-largest automaker in the worldwith about 8.5 million in sales. The deal vaults the alliance in-

to competition for the top spotwith the world’s three biggest au-tomakers, Toyota Motor Corp.,Volkswagen AG and General Mo-tors Co.The plus for Nissan is the

added economies of scale, suchas sharing auto parts, workingtogether on sport-utility vehi-cles, and gaining markets inSoutheast Asia, where the Mit-subishi brand is still strong, saidPaul Newton, an analyst with IHS.“The purchase will give them

an effective controlling stake andis somewhat opportunistic, as$2.2 billion is not a huge sum forsuch a significant chunk of thecompany and could be seen assomething of a bargain,” he saidin an email. The 34 percent stake is below

the threshold for which Nissanwould be liable for Mitsubishi’sdebts under Japanese law, New-ton said.Mitsubishi could face massive

expenses to compensate carowners for the overstatedmileage and pay governmentfines. But Mitsubishi has alreadypromised to compensate Nissanfor lost sales as well as anypenalties and costs from thescandal, Ghosn said.Nissan found the faked mileage

tests because of a discrepancywith its own tests on Mitsubishi-manufactured minicar modelswith tiny engines that had beensold under the Nissan brand.

Cooper-Standard Holdings Inc.of Novi elected Sonya F. Sepah-ban to the company’s Board ofDirectors at its annual Meetingof Stockholders last week.Sepahban brings extensive ex-

perience in engineering, produc-tion, technology and innovation, profit and loss management, andglobal operations within theaerospace and defense industryto her new role at Cooper Stan-dard, said Cooper-Standardspokeswoman Sharon S. Wenzl. Her skills and background pro-

from Maven for $42 a day whenshe wants to run errands.“I’d just rather be spending all

that money on other things thanparking a car for six out of sevendays,’’ she said.Detroit carmakers aren’t the

first to offer mobility services tocompete with the likes of ZipCarand Uber. German automakerDaimler AG launched Car2Go, acar-sharing service, in 2008; itnow operates in 29 cities in Eu-rope and North America. BMWstarted a New York-based mobili-ty venture capital firm in 2011.Toyota has 70 tiny electric carszipping around Grenoble, France,as part of its own car-sharingservice.But after surviving the reces-

sion, Detroit is enjoying recordU.S. sales and plowing the profitsinto mobility experiments.GM has been the most aggres-

sive of the Detroit companies. InJanuary, it invested $500 millionin Lyft and said it will co-developa service that lets customerssummon self-driving cars. Threemonths later, it paid a rumored$1 billion for Cruise Automation,a startup that makes autono-mous vehicle software. Aroundthe same time, it launchedMaven, a car-sharing service inAnn Arbor and Chicago.GM President Dan Ammann

said that when GM sees potentialvalue, it can’t afford to sit backand see where the market heads.“We believe in speed,” Am-

mann said.So far, Wall Street is on board.

Colin Langan, an auto analystwith UBS, said investors under-stand the need to invest in newmobility, and expect companiesto spend hundreds of millions ofdollars a year doing so. Butalarm bells may go off if they’reroutinely spending more.“Historically, automakers have

not been good allocators ofcash,” Langan said.Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Mar-

chionne says it’s dangerous forautomakers to place big bets onone solution. He stresses thatFCA’s partnership with Google isopen-ended and not exclusive. Ifthe companies decide to keepworking together, they will even-tually hammer out details likelicensing fees for the software.“Walking in a collaborative

fashion with people who havehistorically been viewed as in-truders and potential enemies ofour business – walking with themat their speed – is the best possi-ble solution for us in terms of de-termining what our future statewill be,” he said.Ford has done much of its mo-

bility work in-house. The compa-ny has run more than 30 global

mobility experiments over thepast 18 months, including a con-cept in India that lets multiplefamilies or co-workers share acar and a ride-hailing van servicefor workers on its Dearborn cam-pus.But Fields says Ford is flexible

and open to partnerships. TheFordPass app was developedalongside Pivotal, a Silicon Valleysoftware company in which ithas invested $182 million.FordPass lets Ford owners re-

motely start their cars and makecar payments. Users of the freeapp – who don’t have to ownFords – can also reserve and payfor parking spots, get help from alive operator, rent their carsthrough FlightCar and earnpoints at partners like McDon-ald’s.Ford will continue adding fea-

tures; one day, users might beable to summon a self-driving ve-hicle or borrow a Ford-madebike.“People spend about 4.5 hours

per year in a dealership, but theyspend 900 hours per year beingmobile. So how can we have anongoing dialogue?” Elena Fordsaid.

In less than four months,Maven, General Motors’ personalmobility brand, has grown to fivemarkets: New York City, Ann Ar-bor, Mich., and last week an-nounced Boston, Chicago andWashington, D.C.

Maven members have drivenmore than one million miles, saidGM spokeswoman AnnalisaBluhm.

In Chicago, the Maven City carsharing program is now in opera-tion, with pricing starting at $8an hour including insurance andfuel.

Registered customers use theMaven app to reserve one of 30vehicles at more than 15 sitesthroughout the city, said Bluhm.

When Maven City members re-serve their choice of availableChevrolet, Cadillac and Buick ve-hicles, they have the convenientand unique option of having thevehicle hand-delivered to them.Maven has partnered with ZIRXto power the experience, Bluhmsaid.

In addition to Maven City,Maven+ residential on-demandcar sharing is available to resi-dents of the Aqua luxury high-rise apartment community in thecity’s Lakeshore East neighbor-hood.

Launched in March with Lyft, the Chicago Express Drive short-term rental program leveragesthe Maven platform.

Express Drive allows Lyft rideshare service drivers in theChicago area to rent ChevroletEquinox crossovers for $99 aweek.

Chicago Express Drive hasgrown to more than 200 cars ineight weeks.

As previously announced, Ex-press Drive will expand to addi-tional markets including Boston,

Baltimore and D.C. by the end ofthe year.

In Washington, D.C., Maven+car sharing will be available toresidents of the Hepburn, a 195-unit luxury apartment communi-ty opening next month on thegrounds of the WashingtonHilton, located in the city’s exclu-sive Kalorama neighborhood,Bluhm said.

The Hepburn was developedby Lowe Enterprises and will bemanaged by Bozzuto Manage-ment, which will partner withMaven to provide car sharingservices to residents.

Bluhm said Maven City – opento all qualifying D.C. residents –will launch by the end of June.Maven+ and Maven City are com-ing to Boston this summer.

Maven is using GM campus carsharing locations as beta labs fortesting future shared mobilityservices, Bluhm said. It recentlylaunched a peer-to-peer car shar-ing pilot in Warren, Mich., and acampus car sharing service atGM do Brasil headquarters inSao Cataeno do Sul.

“There are now more than 50Maven team members workingglobally as the brand continuesto attract top talent from the carsharing, ride sharing and con-nected car industries, as well assome of the best minds fromwithin GM,” Bluhm said.

Maven members and Lyft driv-ers using Express Drive havelogged more than one millionmiles on the road, Bluhm said.Maven+ is serving more than5,000 residents in New York andChicago.

Maven City has doubled in thepast 90 days to more than 1,500users in Ann Arbor and Chicago,Bluhm said. And the most popu-lar vehicle is the Chevrolet Volt.

ED RINKEBUICK/GMC LEASE PULL AHEAD IS BACK…

Chevrolet and 16-time NHRAchampion John Force on May 17introduced the new 2016 CamaroSS Funny Car that he was to raceat the NHRA Kansas Nationals, inTopeka, Kan., May 20-22.

The new Funny Car body isthe first based on the sixth-gen-eration Camaro SS. Force’s team-mates Courtney Force andRobert Hight will introduce newCamaro SS Funny Cars later thisseason.

“I started my career in aChevrolet and I couldn’t be moreexcited to put this new CamaroSS Funny Car on the track,” saidForce. “With all the assistancefrom Chevrolet, it not only looksgreat, it’s designed to performbetter than anything we’ve hadbefore, with a shape that shouldhelp us get down the track quick-er and with greater stability.”

The team conducted computa-tional analysis and scale-modelwind tunnel testing to help givethe new body the airflow man-agement qualities necessary todeliver the downforce requiredby the 10,000-horsepower super-charged race car, as it acceler-ates from 0 to 330 mph in lessthan 4 seconds – in 1,000 feet.

Among the unique aerodynam-ic elements is a new, integratedfront splitter that helps directmore air over the body to in-crease downforce. The designalso incorporates new, dualblow-out – or “burst” – panels, safety devices that relieve un-derbody pressure to help keepthe body on the chassis in theevent of an engine failure.

Additionally, the new body, which is lighter than John ForceRacing’s previous Camaro FunnyCar bodies, carries the distinc-tive styling signatures of the2016 Camaro SS’s front- and rear-end designs.

“The 2016 Camaro has been agreat success in the showroomand Chevrolet is proud to con-tribute to its debut in NHRA’sFunny Car class,” said Jim Camp-bell, Chevrolet U.S. vice presi-dent of performance vehiclesand motorsports.
