[JUNE 29 05 - JULY 5 05] Campus Circle 1 TOP 20 BANDS YOU NEED TO SEE AT WARPED TOUR 20. Horrorpops – If No Doubt was Danish and had sleeve tattoos and go-go dancers, you’d have the Horrorpops … kind of. Unarguably a live show that’s unlike any you’ve seen on Warped before. 19. Gatsbys American Dream Intelligent while still being catchy, Gatsbys walk that super-fine line between indie and emo that few to no other bands can legitimately pull off. Like, seriously, they wrote a whole concept album based loosely on the book Animal Farm. Let’s see Hawthorne Heights or The Starting Line do that. 18. Transplants – Because it’s just not the Warped Tour without Travis Barker and/or Tim Armstrong. And because you’d know those signature keyboard notes, that raspy, near- unintelligible monotone, the raw, gritty yelling and that trademarked drum pounding anywhere. 17. Silverstein – Melody and hook- driven vocals over hard-rocking guitars and drums, Silverstein’s style is of course going to be more than a little common at Warped this year. The only thing is that Silverstein just does it better than all those other bands. 16. MxPx – Another longtime staple of punk, the members of MxPx have a much more mature charm about them than the twentysomething pop-punkers who think they’re still high school freshmen. They’re a little older (not like, old old) but revel in the fact that they don’t need to win over 13-year-old girls (though singer Mike Herrera does frequently point out how much he enjoys women). 15. Waking Ashland You’ll probably never see Coldplay or Bright Eyes on Warped. Big surprise, right? Well, you might be quite surprised to hear a band like Waking Ashland when you actually get there. Piano-driven pop/soft rock, Waking Ashland is one of those bands that just sounds so beautiful you might cry. Well worth checking out to satisfy the closet emo-pop fan in all of us. 14. Bullets and Octane – Raw, dirty, sweaty and kind of guiltily sexy, Bullets and Octane is the Warped band that will leave you in need of a cigarette or three after their set is over. With his Scott Weiland-esque stage presence, frontman Gene Bullets know how to work a crowd as his band rocks the hell out of it. 13. Bleed the Dream – Achingly emotional and almost painfully raw, Bleed the Dream knows a thing or two about emoting aurally. With an intensity that’s just barely subdued, a Bleed the Dream set is a steady buildup of tension, compelling listeners to wait for the release. You may be a little emotionally drained by the time they finish playing, but you’ll be glad you stayed for them. 12. Rufio – A staple of the modern pop-punk scene, the Rufio guys have worked their way from the ground up, into one of the more recognizable names of Warped. They’re infectiously catchy and just inherently likable, with music that all but begs its listeners to sing and jump along in unison. They’re just a fun, upbeat group in the midst of a majority of bands with a much darker edge. 11. Atreyu Orange County hardcore at its finest. While their OC brethren in Avenged Sevenfold have taken an ’80s metal direction, Atreyu’s members remain on the shredding and growling straight and narrow. They wowed the Ozzfest fans last year, it’s about time they threw a bone to kids on the other end of their hard music spectrum. 10. The Offspring – Chart-topping mainstays and punk pillars The Offspring have played a lot of shows since they started. A lot. They know what works and what doesn’t, and unlike many bands that have been around as long as they have, they haven’t settled into a rut of regurgitating the same material from the last 10 years. They’ve grown up a lot since the days of Smash, and even more since the “Pretty Fly For a White Guy” era. Armed with maturity never really exhibited on past albums, the rock staples are making some of their best music yet and are always worth seeing. WARPED TOUR SURVIVAL GUIDE Reverse Daycare: For kids old enough to enjoy mosh pit- inspired music yet still two years away from that long-awaited driver’s license, here’s the place to drop off your ride home. Bring your parents to this air- conditioned tent, slip them a pair of “noise-proofed” earphones, introduce them to the masseuse and then run! You’ll enjoy the show while your parents enjoy a cold drink and talk to others about the woes of teen parenthood. Girlz Garage: Girls, girls and more girls! That’s what you’ll find at this garage, the eye of the storm for everything a music and sports- loving female could ask for. Bring your tired feet and visit the Shoe Gallery, where Warped Tour bands will be auctioning off their personalized footwear. WARPED TOUR SURVIVAL GUIDE

9. Fall Out Boy – Indie, emo, pop, punk, who the hell knows what to callFall Out Boy these days? Moreimportantly, what does it matter whatyou call them? As anyone who’sfollowed the band or jumped on withthis year’s From Under the Cork Treeknows, all FOB requires that you know

is how to jump and sing along. It’sdefinitely a much easier time that FOBtakes us back to, one of youthfulsimplicity, everything Warped is about.

8. Over It – Epic and honest, twowords you don’t normally associatewith pop-punk, right? NewcomersOver It either never knew that youweren’t supposed to mix thoseadjectives with that genre, or they

just don’t care. If all the GoodCharlottes and Simple Plans havekilled your ability to be enthusiasticabout pop-punk, let Over Itreaffirm your faith in it. Thepassion they show on their debutCD Silverstrand is one you’veprobably never seen in anotherremotely comparable band, andtheir ability to emote withoutwhining should be reason enoughto support them.

7. Tsunami Bomb – Only the verygreatest that girl-punk has to offer, theNorcal, female-fronted quartet neverfails to put on an upbeat performance, with singer Agent M even giving someof the dudes she’s on tour with a runfor their money with how hard sherocks out. It took a little while for lastyear’s The Definitive Act album to pickup steam, but those in the know werealready well aware of TB’s energetic

live shows. You’ll jump, you’ll throw upyour fists, you’ll sing along like nobodyelse is watching you. Yeah, they’re justthat good.

6. Senses Fail – One of the best, no-frills live bands on Warped this yearbecause of sheer charisma alone,Senses Fail promise to rock your faceoff while reminding your cold andjaded scenester heart exactly whatemotion is. Each member of SensesFail is a distinct personality in and ofhimself, but somehow the five manageto come together in one of the mostcohesively hard-rocking bands thisside of emo. Likewise, their ability toinspire the rock in any audience isnearly unparalleled, making themdefinitely worth a watch.

5. Underoath – Youthfully idealisticand at the same time mature farbeyond their years, Underoath has adichotomy to its musical identitythat most bands can’t accomplish, usually sacrificing one for the other.Essentially the thinking kid’sscreamo, Underoath thrashes ontheir instruments while maintainingan unforced, underlying messagethroughout their music. Maybe it’s abit moralistic for you, but you can’tdeny that it’s respect-worthy, ifnothing else. And even if youdisagree, they still make someawesome emotion-fused hard rock.

4. My Chemical Romance – Only, like, the hottest band to get thestrongest cult following in the spanof the last year, the Jersey kids havestepped up their live showconsiderably, proving themselves tobe by far the most improved band ofWarped. Not too shabby for a bandthat was pretty damn good to beginwith. Shredding metal chaosinterbred with controlled, emotionally driven pop, and donewith actual integrity? If a screamoband could be awarded the NobelPrize, MCR would certainly warrantbeing awarded it.

AFTER CREATING THE EVER-successful Warped Tour, being part-owner of punk record labelSideOneDummy, and producingcountless tours such as the SpriteLiquid Mix Tour and, most recently,The Taste of Chaos Tour, you’dthink that Kevin Lyman would haveenough business on his plate.

Not so – Lyman is now the co-founder of Warcon, his newest andpossibly most ambitious venture.Warcon is described as a recordlabel and lifestyle company gearedtoward 12- to 24-year-olds whoenjoy both music and action sports.

Teamed with Lyman, BobChiappardi, founder of the ultra-successful music marketingcompany Concrete Marketing, says

Warcon boasts a unique philosophynot found at your average recordlabel.

“We’re equal partners with thebands that we’re in business with,”says Chiappardi. “We want to make[Warcon] a more community andfamily-type atmosphere. We’relooking to be in a relationship witha band for the long haul.

“There’s a sensibility here thatwe’re all building for the commongoal, which is to nurture the bands,”continues Chiappardi. “We need thebands to be as responsible as weare.”

This team approach to businesshas worked well for Lyman in thepast; he’s built a reputation forigniting the careers of a number of

fledgingbands. Lyman also has a reputationfor personal attention, and believesthat touring can combat the currentstate of illegal music downloadingand file sharing.

“My way is making a face-to-face connection with fans,” saysLyman. “With bands touring, signing autographs and meeting thekids, the fans are going to realize, ‘Iwant to support that person. I wantto back that person because they’repart of my life.’ It’s harder to stealfrom someone that you look in theeyes.”

Chiappardi agrees. “Warcon islooking for bands that are road-worthy. All the bands that we’ve

signed have independentrecords out, have workedtheir fan base and havetoured across thecountry.”

The bands currentlyon Warcon’s rosterinclude Opiate for the

Masses, who has touredwith Avenged Sevenfold,

Ministry and Orgy; MyAmerican Heart, who has

already toured the U.S. twice; andBleed the Dream, who recently wentout on the Taste of Chaos tour withbands such as My ChemicalRomance and The Used.

Warcon also looks to providevalue in the form of affordability, asis evident in the cost of this year’s,and former years’, Warped Tourtickets. Lyman questions the highprice of tickets to some of today’snoteworthy festivals and concerts.Lyman also believes that value is thekey to album sales.

“We’ve had shitty albums forawhile that have been single-based,”he says. “One good song and 12 badsongs. We have to start putting outalbums with better music on them.I believe that music is more asoundtrack to your life than it is

that single of the moment.”Nurturing the careers of talent,

looking at long-term goals, sharingprofits as equal partners andserving up fun wrapped in musicand extreme sports is Warcon’svision and hope for the future. Butthroughout Lyman’s long andvaried career, what has been hissecret to success?

“Being humble and workinghard,” he says with conviction. “Andknowing it can all go awaytomorrow.”

3. Billy Idol – The elder statesman ofthis year’s tour, Billy Idol has years andyears and years of performingexperience, and he still rocks prettyhard for an older dude. And he looksbetter in a pair of leather pants thanmost of the emo kids on the mainstage. Homeboy knows rock likenobody’s business, and adds a verydifferent glam-punk element that thisyear’s tour wouldn’t otherwise have.Ask him how the shaving is going, justfor kicks.

2. Avenged Sevenfold – The baddestmofos that wear more makeup than

Robert Smith and Tammy Faye Bakkercombined, Avenged’s members havetoured extensively on the material fromtheir last album, Waking the Fallen, andin all that time it never got old. Withthe release of their new album, City ofEvil, prepare for the Orange Countynatives to have even more hellishenergy and to show you a very differentside of their musical ability. Do havethe following ready for their set, though: 1) guitar-fingers for SynysterGates and Zacky Vengeance’s Metallicaand Guns N’ Roses worthy shreddingsolos, 2) lighters for “I Won’t See YouTonight pt. 1” (you know, the reallyepic power ballad) 3) and … an armbrace if they go into the newer …

longer, more … epic-er ballads.1. Thrice – The reigning kings ofthrashing rock that’s so emotionallyraw it’ll make you cry while youheadbang, the Irvine foursome alwaysmake for an interesting show nomatter how many times you’ve seenthem before. Their string of acousticdates that were the result of drummerRiley Breckenridge throwing out hisback on the West Coast leg of Warped’03 were nothing short of awe-inspiring (though we love Riley). Sohug your boyfriends and girlfriendsclose when singer Dustin Kensruesolos “Stare at the Sun,” then be ready

to throw some fists when they burstinto “Deadbolt” (which they’ll play ifwe’re really lucky). Because it’s justnot Warped Tour unless you’ve criedlike a girl and cracked skulls like abadass.

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

The Bled – Ear-shreddingly, face-peelingly, violently raw. ’Nuff said.

Strung Out – Another of the moreexperienced bands on this year’slineup, Strung Out’s continuing movetoward heavier influences promises torock crowds.

American Eyes – Hard-rocking pop-punk with an indie edge that dressesbetter than you do.

The Explosion – Rancid-style pop-punk on a tour that is sorely missingits old-timer staples.

Dropkick Murphys – The definitiveband to drink beer and bro’ out to inthe middle of the day.

Armor For Sleep – Atmospheric butstill totally rocking, kind of heavy whilestill being catchy,Armor For Sleep offersup the less bright side of melodic pop.
