Missing Factor• This array card relates to the problem:

"Ms. Santos owns a neighborhood grocery store. She has 56 apples to arrange in rows for her window display. She has room for 4 rows in her window. How many apples will there be in each row if she puts the same number in each row?"

• The card tells us the total number of squares in the array, just as we knew the total number of apples that Ms. Santos had.

• The card also shows us one FACTOR, the same way we knew the number of rows in the apple problem. The other factor is missing, and that is like the information we need to find in the apple problem- the number of apples in each row.

• How can we solve for the missing factor?

Missing Factor

• Create the Missing Factors Recording Sheet by copying page 29.

• Select one array from the cards you have displayed.

• Write both a multiplication equation and a division equation for the array, inserting a blank for the missing factor (7 x __ = 63 and 63 / __ = 7)

• Find the missing factor, and write it in the blank space in each equation.

• Circle the missing factor in each equation.
