The Neighbors in Need Fund was established to provide

financial assistance NOW to those residents of Warm Hearth Village who are unable to afford the full cost of their housing and care.

The Brian H. Smith Benevolence Endowment focuses on FUTURE needs of residents at the Village. The Endowment was established in 2003 by Village residents who wanted to ensure the Warm Hearth Foundation could provide financial assistance to those in need well into the future.

Our tradition of caring, and our mission to enrich the lives of all residents makes the Benevolence Endowment an imperative in

order to meet future needs.

Lights of Love

Each year, the Warm Hearth Foundation hosts our annual Lights of Love event. This event has become a tradition honoring and remembering neighbors, friends, and family. Warm Hearth Foundation supporters make gifts in honor or memory of a special person in their life. During the ceremony, names are read as a candle is lit to honor or remember each individual. In addition to

honoring those that are recognized, Lights of Love impacts the lives of those in need in our community through the Neighbors in Need fund. All gifts help provide housing, meals and nursing care to those in need on our campus.

In 2016, the Warm Hearth Foundation began a campaign to expand transportation services within the village. We reached out to loyal supporters on campus and in the local community to ask for their help to purchase two new vehicles for transportation services at Warm Hearth Village.

We are so thankful to our supporters. Contributions of $108,000 allowed Warm Hearth to purchase two new Dodge Vans. The first vehicle is a 8 passenger vehicle that allows for transportation of six wheelchairs. This specialty vehicle is used primarily by the Kroontje Health Care Center to transport residents on campus and into the community. This vehicle allows residents to visit the Village Center on campus to take part in activities. It has also allowed the Kroontje Center Activities staff to expand their programming options by being able to transport residents to events in the local community.

In addition to our wheelchair van, a new 9 passenger van was purchased to be used for Village wide transportation. This vehicle will be used for transportation to doctor’s appointments, shopping and events out in the community. With the addition of a second vehicle for Village wide transportation, it will allow for expansion of trips into the community.

Each year, The Community Foundation of the New River Valley hosts Give Big NRV Day. Over 100 nonprofit organizations in the area participate to raise awareness of charitable giving in our community.

The Warm Hearth Foundation hosted an event in support of the giving day. “Under the Big Top” was a day of fun and giving on our campus to support Neighbors in Need and raise awareness of the needs on our

campus.

Micah’s Personal Care Items - Our Newest Program

In 2012, the Warm Hearth Foundation, partnered with St. Michael Lutheran Church to start a new program called Micah’s Soup for Seniors. This program started providing shelf stable grocery items to residents of the Trolinger and New River House apartments in September. The program began serving 60 neighbors and quickly grew to 100 neighbors each month. Our first program expansion added Micah’s Garden, providing residents with a community garden to grow their own produce in the summer months.

With the success of these two programs and realizing that we had another area of unmet need on our campus, we added a third program in 2015, Micah’s Personal Care Items. Working with Resident Services Coordinator, Cindy Wiley-Lamb, we identified a need for personal care items including toilet paper, paper towels, laundry detergent, soap, shampoo, incontinence products as well as other items. This program is designed to help residents at the end of the month when funds run low and they begin to run out of these items. The program provides assistance to get neighbors through until their next Social Security check arrives. Since the program began, we serve an average of 30-40 residents per month and provide an average of $470 in personal care items per month. This is in addition to $1600 in grocery items per month provided by the Micah’s Soup for Seniors program. The Micah’s programs continue to grow to meet needs on our campus.

Cheeseburger in Parrot-dise has become an annual tradition at Warm Hearth Village. Each year, we look forward to a night of food and beach themed fun with our friends and neighbors.

The 4th annual event was held on September 25, 2016 and featured music from the Panjammers as well as DJ Mark Taylor. In addition to the beach music those in attendance enjoyed a variety of gourmet cheeseburgers from local restaurants; Hethwood Market, KEMS, Buffalo and More and the Village Gourmet.

Those in attendance had a wonderful time as they enjoyed the music, food and silent auction. All the festivities raise money for the Warm Hearth Foundation’s Neighbors in Need Fund. 4th Annual Cheeseburger in Parrot-dise

The fun didn’t end in September. The 2nd Annual Parrot Strut 5k run and fun walk was held on October 15. This event brings runners and walkers from all over the New River Valley to our beautiful woodland campus. It provides an opportunity to run on the wooded trails throughout Warm Hearth. The event grew this year and we look forward to hosting the event next year.

We would like to say a special thank you to LewisGale Hospital – Montgomery for their partnership in this event.

The Parrot Strut and Cheeseburger events raised a total of $28,000 for the Neighbors in Need fund and will help seniors in need on our campus.
