Principal’s ReportWe have reached the final week of the term and our students (and staff) will no doubt enjoy a well-deserved break over the next fortnight. We have had a thoroughly enjoyable 10 weeks with the school continually making exciting strides towards achieving our significant strategic directions.

Last week, our boys PSSA Touch Footballers took on an extremely skilful Gulargambone Central School team. Despite being down 3 nil at the halftime break, our boys fought their way back into the contest. With some enterprising play and heroic defence the boys entertained the large crowd. Congratulations to the Gulargambone team who will progress to the next round after winning 5 tries to 3.

An enormous congratulations must be afforded to Christian Whalan on achieving an incredible third place at the Regional NSW Premiers Spelling Bee. Christian travelled to Armidale to compete in this competition and ultimately placed third after mispelling the word ‘Porpoise’. There’s no doubt this was a very tricky word but one that I’m sure Christian will never spell incorrectly again! Well done Christian – we are all very proud of you!

Today, our girls will travel to Bundarra to play their next game of the knockout. We wish the girls and Miss Cole a safe trip and of course, a successful, enjoyable game. We shall include a complete match report in the next newsletter.

The incredibly popular Super 6 Cricket competition continued last week but was interrupted by the rainy weather. This lunchtime initiative is proving to be insanely popular with more children joining each week. Fixtures will resume on the first day back of Term 4.

I know that there are many very excited Year 3 and 4 students eagerly awaiting this weeks Stage 2 Excursion to Lake Keepit. The Office of Water is reporting that Lake Keepit has risen to an impressive 72% with this figure increasing daily. Our students depart on Wednesday morning and will enjoy three days with kayaking, archery and rock-climbing among the many fun activities to be completed.

I was delighted to receive feedback from several parents involved in our recent Kindergarten transition program. Each of the parents extended their congratulations to Mrs Lanesbury, Mrs Waller and Mrs Durkin for the way in which they have planned such exciting and meaningful learning experiences for the children attending. They each reported that their little one’s can’t wait to start at WPS in 2017!

After an incredible amount of planning and organising, our 2016 STEM day took place on Friday the 16th of September. Upon reflection, I cannot recall a more satisfying or rewarding day in my teaching career! Watching students from Collarenebri, Bingara, Boomi, Warialda HS, Warialda PS, North Star and Moree Secondary College participate in hands-on, inquiry-based learning was both inspiring and rewarding. A most sincere thanks to the staff from the University of New England and Nerida McCredie for travelling to Warialda to assist with the day. Also, thank you to Toby Osmond and his staff from Café Gali for ensuring all participants had delicious brain food! Also, an enormous amount of gratitude must go to Mrs Laura Cush who worked so hard behind the scenes in preparing for the day. The staff from the University of New England were very generous with their praise for the day declaring that “Warialda Public School has set the benchmark for the hosting of such events – it’s the best we’ve seen by a mile”.

Have a safe and happy holiday!

Kindergarten Transition

Welcome to

BIG SCHOOL for 2017.......

On Friday last we held our third transition which was a wonderful success from all reports. Children played with iPads, enjoyed circus themed craft and loved meeting their new school mates. Our next transition will be held on 21st October with an ‘Under the Sea’ theme. Mrs Lanesbury is busily preparing for the next transition day which will commence at 9am and finish at 1.30pm. Children will be required to bring their fruit, water bottle, hat and lunch.

Warialda versus Gulargambone

Girl’s 3rd in the North WestOur Touch girl’s travelled to Bundarra today to play in very wet conditions returning with third place in the north west region. Bundarra were too good on the day winning 5 - 2. Our girls had a very competitive campaign defeating Bingara, Moree and Coonamble to compete in round five of this knockout.Thank you to the parents who assisted with transport and Miss Cole for her valuable coaching.

THE WARIALDA BITE! ISSUE 1: SEPTEMBER 2016

Issue 1: September 2016

Carrot and Ginger Soup (Makes 6 serves) Ingredients:

2 tablespoons oil (olive/canola/safflower)

2 onions, peeled, diced

8 medium carrots, washed, coarsely chopped

3 cloves of garlic, peeled, chopped finely

2cm fresh ginger, peeled, chopped finely

5 cups of salt-reduced vegetable stock or water

1 cup of low fat milk

Chives (optional)

1. Heat oil over medium heat in a large saucepan

2. Add onions and carrots and cook for a 5 minutes, stirring

3. Add the garlic and ginger and cook for another 5 minutes, stirring

4. Add the stock or water and bring to a boil, then turn heat down, cover with a lid and simmer for about 20 minutes until carrot is tender

5. Take off heat and add the milk

6. Pour the carrot mixture into the jug of a blender and blend until smooth. Make sure you don’t fill the blender and leave some room for steam to escape.

7. Return to the saucepan and gently reheat

Serving suggestion: Some natural low fat yoghurt added just before you serve the soup will make the soup creamy

Dear Parents/Guardians and Community of Warialda Public School,

Welcome to the first edition of ‘The Warialda Bite’.

As I am hoping you are all aware, the school has a Good Start Breakfast Club which is in partnerships with Red Cross. The program aims to provide a healthy breakfast to school aged children, as well as to deliver nutrition information to the students, their families and the community.

It was agreed that this ‘attachment’ to the school newsletter, would be a great way to provide you with some new recipes to include in school lunchboxes, after school snacks as well as for dinner. It is also a great opportunity to share with you some ‘knowledge building’ on various topics. Hopefully The Warialda Bite will help you to make healthier food choices, improving your childrens health and learning outcomes for the future.

Before we leave the cold behind, I thought that a really nice, budget friendly soup recipe would be a great way to start us off! Enjoy!

Gabriella Barrett Food Security Project Officer, Dubbo

Did you know that carrots have been nominated by

Australians as their favourite vegetable? Of 800 shoppers surveyed in 2013, 94% said that carrots were the vegetable they bought
