DESCRIPTION OF COURSES

CRITERIA FOR DESIGN - This is not apractical loom session. We will exploresett, yarns, calculations, weavestructures, fancy yarns and generaldesign theories. Colour and proportionexercises can be practised.

MAKING A WARP - Quick and reliablemethods for warping accurately will betaught. Students can either bring theirown warp yarn and the day will cover thedesigning of their warp prior to warping.Alternatively students can make a warpsuitable for the ‘Introduction to Weaving’/cushion cover, then dress the loom andweave the cushion. An excellent, threedays for a beginner.

DRESSING THE LOOM - This workshopis a continuation of the ‘Making a Warp’Workshop.

INTRODUCTION TO WEAVING/ WEAVE ACUSHION COVER - An excellent coursefor beginners. Some of the simple fourshaft weaves will be practised to weavea square of cloth suitable for a cushion.

DESIGNING WITH COLOUR – An ‘OffLoom’ session in which sometechniques for choosing and designingwith colour are practiced. Should befollowed by an ‘On Loom’ day.

PLAIN WEAVE & SKIP PLAIN WEAVEFOR RUGS - This course looks at thesimple colour patterns and fingermanipulated techniques available withplain weave.

KROKBRAGD - This is a Norwegian rugweaving structure, which produces smallintricate designs very easily. Thiscourse will cover the designing of someof these patterns.

TWILLS FOR RUGS - The twill structureas a rug weight enables a beautifullyfirm rug to be woven. This course allowsstudents to explore some of thethreading plans and weft sequences thatare possible.

DOUBLE CORDUROY / KNOTTEDPILE/RAG RUGS - This workshopcompares the techniques for weavingpile rugs either by loom control or fingermanipulated techniques.

4 END BLOCK WEAVE - SUMMER ANDWINTER - This course will cover thedesign possibilities and texturepossibilities of weaving summer andwinter as a rug weight.

3 END BLOCK WEAVE - Similar toSummer & Winter block weave in thatlarge geometric colour block patternscan be woven as a rug weight.

WARP FACED RUGS - This coursecovers the designing of the warp for‘repp’ weaves as a rug weight.Threading variations and pick-uptechniques will be explored.

INTRODUCTION TO KILIM WEAVING -This course offers a chance to weave amini-Kilim (3” square). Middle Easterntraditional slit tapestry techniques will bewoven on a small frame loom.

BOUNDWEAVE - A chance to weavedelightful figurative patterns on fourshafts.

INTRODUCTION TO TAPESTRYWEAVING – A sample of warpingtechniques and weaving techniques willbe woven on a frame loom

SUMMER & WINTER FOR FABRICS –The only four-shaft block weave whichenables large square patterns andtextured areas to be woven.

LACE WEAVES - The four shaft weavessuch as Huckaback, Bronson and MockLeno will be threaded up on the looms toallow students to experiment with thelacy textures that are possible.

SHADOW WEAVE - By developing LogCabin weave, bold block patterns madeup of vertical and horizontal hairline canbe designed.

DOUBLE CLOTH - This workshopexplores how to weave tubes or doublewidth cloths and also the bold pictorialdesigns possible by finger manipulatingthis simple weave.

TWILLS FOR FABRICS - The four shafttwills will be explored together with themany threading plans that can bedeveloped from them. Approximately 70samples can be woven in a day

M & O - The block threading of M & O isexplored with traditional wefting plansand more experimental texturedpatterns.

HONEYCOMB - The honeycomb type cellstructures traditionally used for blanketsand towels will be explored anddeveloped.

OVERSHOT - Traditionally used to weaveAmerican bedcovers this course willallow students to explore this versatileweave and ways of colouring itsuccessfully.

COLLAPSE WEAVE – By using yarns ofdifferent shrinkage and twist highlytextured fabrics can be woven.

THEO MOORMAN TECHNIQUE - TheoMoorman developed a simple weavestructure to enable different textures andweights of yarn to be woven side by sideyet not distort. A finger manipulatedtechnique.

COLOUR & WEAVE EFFECT - Thetraditional tweed patterns created bysimple warp and weft colouring plans onplain weave, twill and hopsack will bewoven, together with designing thelarger Glen Checks

SOUTH AMERICAN BROCADINGTECHNIQUES - The enchanting patternsproduced by South American weavers onback-strap looms will be practised andexplored on the western four-shaft loom.

INKLE BRAID WEAVING - An inkle loomis a small loom for weaving braids. Thisis a chance to learn how to design andweave simple and elaborate braids andpassementerie.

WARP REPP - Warp faced plain weavefor fabrics. A sample of loom controlledand finger manipulated techniques willbe woven.

BEDFORD CORD –A textured weave, which produces horizontal cords on fourshafts. Using colour and weave effectsand unusual threading plans interestingeffects are produced.

8 SHAFT TWILLS –Six differentthreadings on one sampler allow fornumerous diagonal, zig-zag anddiamond designs to emerge from 8shaft twills.

8 SHAFT DOUBLE CLOTH -Interchanging plain weave in warp andweft is sampled using colour, pluscombining double plain with plainweave, twill and colour and weaveeffects is explored.

8 SHAFT BOLD COLOUR & WEAVEEFFECT/DEFLECTED DOUBLE CLOTH –Clear two colour patterns can be wovenor developed to create areas of doublecloth, which distort on washing.

8 SHAFT BLOCK WEAVE –Many fourshaft weaves can be combined to createpattern and texture, such as satin &sateen and twills. This samplerexplorers some of the possibilities.

DYEING WITH ACID & FIBRE REACTIVEDYES - A course, which gives studentsa chance to random space dye a silkscarf warp as well as dye wool and silkhanks with the Russell Dye System.(Silk and wool yarns charged extra).

INDIGO DYING - Students will make anindigo vat with indigo grains and dyewool, silk or cotton yarns. (Yarnscharged as extra - but you may bring yourown yarn to dye).

PAINTED WARPS - Detailedpatterns/designs can be painted oneither a silk or cotton warp with fibrereactive dyes. (Warp charged as extra -but you may bring your own warp).

WOOL SPINNING FOR BEGINNERS -Wool preparation and wool carding aswell as long draw spinning will betaught. Two separate one-dayworkshops will be needed. A spinningwheel can be borrowed for practice inbetween workshops.

PROJECT DESIGN - I have been askedto help with the design process ofspecific projects for students. This hastaken the form of flexible three/four daysessions whereby a fabric is designed, then sampled and then a full projectplanned for the student to weave athome. Telephone me to discuss yourproject
