IN THE HEART OF THE ALPS Hiking, running, Nordic walking or climbing – whichever technique suits you, Tirol has the perfect terrain:  around 15,000 km of managed, signposted hiking and mountain trails, which lead from gentle, mountain terrain right up to craggy high alpine peaks.  Down in the valleys there is a cosy and friendly inn perched at just about every fork in the path, while up in the mountains quaint alpine inns and mountain huts assure a warm welcome.  The air is intoxicating and healthy and there is an excellent network of cable cars and chair lifts to lighten your ascent or descent.  The USP of a hiking holiday is of course your intimacy with nature. The scenery is so enchantingly beautiful and full of endless variety that your feet will not want to stop.  Not a place for couch potatoes then, but a land for hiking-hungry people and those who want to discover its pleasures.

ONWARD TO NEW HEIGHTS.

The very best hiking trails go wherever the eagles fly, like Tirol’s Adlerweg (“Eagle Walk”). You can get to know the entire province as you hike along the 280-km main route and the various regional routes in 126 one-day legs: from St. Johann in Tirol’s lowlands to St. Anton am Arlberg, or into the network of valleys and through all of Osttirol. Easy and fun hikes can be found here, as well as challenging summit hikes for experienced mountaineers. The division into daily stages and

the related suggestions for rest stops make planning your tours easy. Whether you want to take short excursions or multi-day hikes with overnight stays in mountain lodges – no matter which route you choose, the Eagle will show you the way! Selected one, two and three-day tours, as well as the main and regional routes are shown on the enclosed folding map of the Adlerweg. www.hiking.tyrol.com

HIkINg WITHCHILDRENPLAYFULLY REACHING YOUR DESTINATION.

Are you already tired and have sore feet? Don’t worry, because there are plenty of attractions and excursion destinations in Tirol that appeal to children and young people, and the entire family feels at home up on the kid-friendly Almen (alpine farms) and mountain lodges. The journey itself is often the reward, especially on our richly varied themed trails. E.g. the murmlitrail in Serfaus-Fiss-Ladis is even suitable for baby carriages, and the Drei-Hütten (3 Lodges) Tour in the Imst-gurgltal region, featuring a children‘s alpine nature trail, concludes the hike with a speedy descent on the Alpine Coaster, the longest roller coaster in the Alps. The ‘Familien- erlebnisweg’ in Tux offers eight kilometres of family adventures and surprises in the great outdoors and the Bärenbachl in Steinach is a popular pleasure for paddlers on hot summer days. The many interesting adventure and nature stations at the ‘Hexenwasser’ in Hochsöll are so enchanting, that the kids won’t want to go home. Some of the stages of the Adlerweg offer terrific attractions as well, like the “AirRofan” sky-glider in the Rofan hiking area, with which you zoom more than half a kilometre over the mountain landscape at 80 km/h in an eagle-like hang glider. A fun and breathtaking adventure, which requires a bit of courage. (On the Adlerweg’s main Route 07)

Would you rather count your steps or your calories? Probably neither one – for enjoyment is the essence of Tirol’s tasty hiking routes. They tempt you to get acquainted with Tirol’s culinary delights, from Zillertal’s hay-milk cheese to Wildschönau’s famous curative krautingerschnaps to Brandenberg’s famous towering layered cake, the Prügeltorte. You can indulge your tastes for hiking and dining in galtür too, where you can sample

aromatic Paznauner Alm cheese at various stations along the way. And the Osttirol's mountain lamb are fed the finest herbs, making their meat so tender that you’d trek a lot farther for it than just the lovely walk up to the Oberstaller Alm in the Villgraten Valley. There you can dine on several variations of this speciality as part of a Delicious Hiking route. Bon appétit!

VITAL HIkINgTHE RIGHT STEPS TO FITNESS.

Hiking in moderate elevations is healthy, that has been scientifically proven. It gets the heart and circu-latory system going and is also good for the soul. If you combine it with dynamic movement, e.g. Nordic Walking, the training effect is enhanced and you quickly gain new energy and greater physical fitness. A good Nordic Walking trail, for example, is the Franzis-kusweg (St. Francis Trail) in the Wildschönau region. This path is suitable not only for sports activities, it combines the natural world and

art in unique way by displaying beautiful sculptures along the route. Alternatively, a circular kneipp trail is offered in Seefeld, where you can devote yourself to refreshing and varied matters of health and fitness, like marching through water, breathing exercises and herbalogy. You’ll also get that same wonderful tingling in your legs and full-body invigoration at Tirol’s kneipp-Erlebnisdorf Scheffau in the Wilder kaiser region.

PEAk HIkINgYOU’VE MADE IT TO THE TOP.

If you love lofty heights, you’ll love Tirol. Nearly 600 proud 3000-metre peaks rise here and countless other mountain majesties call to you to experience their high alpine realms. Some summits are easier to reach, while others can only be climbed if you have the right mountaineering skills and experience. But even our less experienced visitors can achieve their mountaineering dream on guided tours with certified mountain sport guides. guided hikes and mountain tours are offered throughout Tirol. The Ötztal Alps have a wide and wonderful variety of mountain tours, from easy ascents to difficult climbs. Northern Tirol’s highest

summit, the 3,768 m Wildspitze, is a challenge for expert climbers. With its 241 peaks at or above the 3000-metre mark, Osttirol is also a climbers’ paradise – that’s why the Adlerweg (Eagle Walk) spreads its wings over the southernmost part of Tirol: Demanding high alpine tours alternate with easygoing valley hikes between the grossglockner and the grossvenediger. For a safe summit experience, we recommend a guided mountain tour with certified, mountain guides who are familiar with the area.

TIROL’S mOUNTAIN INNS AND CABINS

ADVENTURE HIkINg

Hiking means not just walking but also seeing. There is a great deal to see in Tirol’s nature parks and in the Hohe Tauern National Park. You can have an especially close encounter with mother Nature on a „Nature Watch“ tour with a trained guide – an exciting and entertaining way to expand your knowledge. Equipped with binoculars made by Swarovski Optik, visitors can learn some of the secrets of Tirolean wildlife, e.g. by deer stalking or observing the courtship rituals of the wood grouse. Those who want to learn the art of tracking should

take part in a guided animal tracks hike. Don’t be surprised if you also learn about your own nature thereby, for an adventure hike through Tirol’s rugged landscape is always a pathway to finding oneself.

The Tiroler Sommerbahnen (Summer Cable Car Co.) will ensure your easy ascent and descent of the moun-tain – even if you have a baby carriage along.

Turn around and hike right back down into the valley after climbing all that way? Only when absolutely necessary. Because spending a night in an alpine cottage or a romantic Almgasthaus (alpine inn) is something very special. Here you can sit and chat with other hikers and climbers, gathering some good tips for the next day while enjoying a simple but delicious meal. Each inn is differently equipped: some

alpine inns have all the comforts, yet have preserved their original charm. Or you can enjoy the old-world cosiness of a cabin with no electricity, where water still has to be heated in a kettle over an open fire.
