Announcements:

President Susan pointed out the list of upcoming events on our tables.

Norm Nagel is in the hospital, recovering at Los Robles. Lyn

Perry will be having surgery soon.

Nancy Wohl is looking for volunteers for the Conejo Free Clinic and Westminster immunization day on Wednesday, August 8th, from 9 – 11 a.m. and 5:30 – 8 p.m. She is also collecting children’s used clothing.

Joani Pappas reminded us of the Midsummer’s Eve Wine Festival coming up on Saturday, August 18th. Please take the flyers from the table and the entry hall, to give to your contacts. Admission tickets are on sale now, two for $100.

Regarding the auction items: We are looking for items for make baskets worth a minimum of $75. You can assemble your own, or bring us the items and we will package them. We are also still looking for other items for the auction – keep your eyes open while out and about, and while cleaning out your garage.

Pedro Chavez said that 26 fellow Rotarians have stepped up so far and made a $20 commitment for the Back-to-School backpacks project. Signup sheets are on the table. Seven Rotarians so far have volunteered to help to help stuff them, on Saturday, August 4th.

Richard Williams said that many awards were handed out at the District Governor’s step-down meeting, and we won the Governor’s Super Club Award and a Presidential Citation. That makes a clean sweep for all the things we applied for this year, based on all the work we did during the course of the year.

Richard also mentioned the letters we received from the RYLA kids. The thoughts expressed by them tell us how important that program is – both to us and to them.

Susan reminded us that the three events we put on each year are mandatory events; that is, every member is expected to help and participate in each one. Please see Susan, Joani or Lois to sign up to help at MEWF. It takes a lot of work to put on these shows. Additionally – the Street Fair is coming up in October.

Tanya Caligiuri thanked Tamara Campbell for arranging for two great articles in the Star and in the Acorn about Andy Caligiuri’s trek of the Pacific Crest Trail.

Pedro Chavez (1) was recognized by the Pacific Coast Business Times for the work they do in the non-profit community; and (2) after six weeks of training his butt off, he will be in the county’s Dancing with the Community Stars competition at the Salsa Festival on Sunday at 1:00.

Tammy Helmuth is celebrating her 19th anniversary with Mike, having just spent two weeks in Hawaii with the family; and she is looking for the contact information for a doctor who spoke here a few years ago who is a auto-immune specialist.

Matt Morrison pointed out the article in Furry Times of himself and his favorite furry friend Jack, who goes to work with him once a week.

Robert Bianchi matched Steve Pederson’s dollar, and raised him one.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING ABOUT THEIR

RYLA EXPERIENCE

"…truly life changing. …. I learned not to waste time, but to spend it. I learned to take initiative and do what I wanted to do now, not later.

"It's hard, cause you can't express all the amazing things that happen here. The things that I learned here will definitely stay with me for a long time. …. I think it's amazing how Rotary does this stuff for people."

"Everyone here is so positive and friendly I honestly don't want to come home to the real world. …. This has been a surreal experience that I will never forget."

"It has been one of the most amazing weekends of my entire life--definitely life-changing. …. I will never forget the lessons that I have learned at RYLA."

"In diversity we all were able to share each others' grief and grow all the stronger for it as friends. We learned that, regardless how different people may be, there are still many more things that we will have in common."

"I have made lifelong friendships and memories I will never forget. Listening to all the speakers and the stories of the fellow campers made me realize the true impact ONE decision can have on a person's life, good or bad. …. My motivation level and spirit are raised 110%"

"Because of RYLA, I feel like a more mature, wiser, more confident individual, and I look forward to using the skills I've learned here in school, in sports, and in my community. This camp has been amazing…."

"…one of my favorite weekends in my life. … I hope it does help me to success, and I would not have the chance if you did not send me up to RYLA."
