I’m banking on the latter. Even in a great year, I would never find huge numbers. For that, I would have to be out in the woods a lot more or go to a Morel hotspot like the Midwest. Still, this was my best year yet, and I put to use many of the morel hunting skills I’ve learned at WPMC’s presentations at Pine Ridge Lodge. I’m looking forward to Chanterelle and Bolete seasons. The early summer thunderstorms have been rolling through the area every two or three days, and the weather has been warm. We’ve been finding Boletes on some of our early May walks, and we should start to see Chanterelles popping up by the time you receive this newsletter. The online catalog of fungi species in the area received a boost when former WPMC President John Stuart donated 2,000 images to it. They include a great collection of milk-cap mushrooms (Lac- tarius), along with some other less frequently observed species. iNaturalist is also doing well, with 27 members having joined the WPMC project and about 250 species identified already. We are very pleased to announce that WPMC received a Pitts- burgh Magazine “Best of the ‘Burgh” award, under its Business and Education section, for Best Place for Fun with Fungi. This is great recognition for all the time that the volunteers have put into WPMC over the years running walks, forays, classes and more. As with any club, it is the volunteers that make it happen. Many of our key volunteers have been donating their time for many years, and we typically draw from the same pool. Because of this, we are always looking for new volunteers to ease the burden and make WPMC run smoothly. If you would like to help, please let a Board member know. Another announcement is that WPMC has been chosen to be a pilot club for the NAMA MycoFlora 2.0 project. We’ve been running a DNA barcoding project since 2013, and NAMA takes some of those ideas and tries to bring make some standardized methods available to all of the other mushroom clubs in the country. We’ll be testing these methods in the coming months. Highlights in the next few months include the third BioBlitz at Wing- field Pines and the Chanterelle Walk in North Park. August will take us to the southwestern corner of Pennsylvania for a mushroom hike at Ryerson Station; to Forbes State Forest for an Introduction to Fungi walk with the PA DCNR Bureau of Forestry; and to the lakeshore at Presque Isle State Park. You’ll find information about these and other walks in this newsletter. Due to ongoing construction work at Beechwood Farms, we have relocated the next two monthly meetings, and we’ve lined up great speakers from the club. See below for more details. Who Wants Truffles?by Rico, the truffle dog

hi, i’M Rico, the truffle dog. I’m a Lagotto Romagnolo, which is an Italian breed known for our great noses. We’re specially bred to hunt for truffles. We think it’s fun. People used to use pigs to hunt for truffles, but that didn’t work because the pigs would just eat them. Not us! We have fun sniffing, we’re rewarded if we find a truffle, and then we get to do it all over again!

My human’s name is Bill Collins. He takes me to vineyards in Napa Valley to show people what I can do. Right now we’re just sniffing out truffles flown in from Europe, because the California truffles aren’t quite ready yet. It takes five to six years for the special filbert trees from American Truffle Company to make truffles. But once they do, oh boy! The human in charge of ATC is Robert Chang. He says that dogs with sharp noses like mine are essential to the success of rais-ing truffles in California.

Editor’s Note: Robert Chang, Managing Director and Chief Truffle Officer of the American Truffle Company, will be this year’s Guest Mycologist for the Gary Lincoff Foray on September 16.

Reuse, Recycle, Regift!havE an ExtRa MushRooM book? Or a mushroom t-shirt that you’ll never wear? Stop feeling guilty and donate it to the Foray auction. We’ve already received dozens of “treasures,” including books, posters, magazines, and more. All proceeds benefit WPMC. Email Cecily Franklin at: [email protected].

“Falling for Fungi” Mushroom Classes at Harrison HillsJoin WPMc idEntiFiER FluFF bERgER and other WPMC experts for morning mushroom classes and an afternoon walk at the Harrison Hills Park in Allegheny County on Saturday, Sep-tember 23, 2017.

Classes will take place in the Environmental Learning Center from 10:00 a.m. to noon. We’ll learn about common edible fungi of the autumn season, what to feast upon and what to avoid putting in your pot. Mushrooms are often plentiful in the fall, and a few are easy to identify which add culinary interest to your meals, even throughout the winter!

Bring your own lunch. Then we’ll go for a hike on a Harrison Hills trail to practice what we learned in the morning, with the walk leaders pointing out other interesting and unusual fungi.

Watch our website and future newsletters for more information.

Here I am, really “digging” the truffle hunt!

WPMC IN THE NEWSPittsburgh Post-Gazette Features WPMC Walk on Sycamore Island

WPMC Mycologists Jim Tunney and La Monte Yarroll

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette featured WPMC in its May 13 Magazine section with an article titled “Exploring Sycamore Island: Western PA Mushroom Club examines the Allegheny River island”. Outdoor Editor John Hayes interviewed WPMC Mycologist Jim Tun-ney in anticipation of our Sycamore Island walk with Allegheny Land Trust on May 21. To read the entire article, visit:

Pittsburgh Magazine Names WPMC “Best of the ‘Burgh”It’s official! Pittsburgh Magazine has named WPMC Best Place for Fun with Fungi in its 2017 “Best of the ‘Burgh” issue. Here’s what they had to say: The Western Pennsylvania Mushroom Club’s slogan is “Fungi, fun and friends!” and it aims to provide its mem-bers with all three. The club was founded in 2000 to promote the enjoyment and study of wild mushrooms; it holds forays, walks, meetings and classes, and members attend out-of-state events. With more than 30 walks and forays scheduled this year in places such as Presque Isle State Park and Dead Man’s Hollow, the club has plenty to offer its more than 600 members.

FUNGI Magazine Article Recognizes WPMC’s Efforts in Citizen ScienceThe Spring 2017 issue of FUNGI Magazine includes an extensive article by Bill Sheehan, Ph.D., entitled “Mushroom Citizen Science in USA: From Species Lists to Mycofloras 2.0.” This article recognizes WPMC and several of our members.

Under the heading “Northeast Bolete Consortium,” the article identi-fies “eight experienced collectors,” including WPMC members scott Pavelle and John Plischke iii. It specifically mentions Scott’s Bolete Filter, an online “encyclopedia” of North American boletes.

The section on NAMA’s Voucher Sequencing Program recognizes WPMC Mycologist la Monte yarroll, who sampled new collections for DNA barcoding at the 2015 Black Mountain Foray.

Under Acknowledgements, WPMC President Richard Jacob re-ceives a “special shout-out” for sharing detailed information about WPMC and its programs.

Following is the WPMC section, in its entirety:

“Western Pennsylvania Mushroom Club (WPMC): An excellent model has been created by WPMC under the leadership of club president Richard Jacob. Their website excels in thorough explanation and documentation of each step in collection, description and DNA barcoding specimens. The web page Introduction to DNA Barcod-ing provides a valuable tutorial on the process, as well as links to record-keeping sheets. The club has created detailed binders that can be checked out by members wanting to engage in recording, vouchering and DNA barcoding. Currently, specimens are being sequenced at Duke University for the cost of labor and analyzed by Jacob; sequenced specimens are also stored at the Duke University Herbarium (DUKE). WPMC used the DNA barcoding work and a web-based bolete synoptic key in a project called the Northeast Bo-lete Consortium (see above). A key challenge to club-led mycoflora projects is illustrated by the fact that WPMC is keeping its extensive specimen documentation in a local database because critical web portals do not communicate with each other.”

New Report AvailablethE cEntERs FoR disEasE Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released its findings about death cap poisonings in California in its weekly Morbidity and Mortality Report. The article, entitled Amanita phalloides Mushroom Poisonings—Northern California, December 2016, documents the reactions in 14 people who consumed death caps within a few days of each other. All 14 victims became violently ill. Fortunately, none of them died. However, three of them needed liver transplants and one of those—an 18-month-old girl—also suffered permanent neurological impairment.

There are a number of environ-ments, ranging from beaches and shoreline; sandy plain and ponds; sand dunes and ridges; marshes and old ponds; heath and sub-climax forest; and the climax forest. Very different environments from Pittsburgh, so we should find a number of species of mushrooms new to the Club. Meeting point is the Tom Ridge Environmental Cen-ter. Since we plan to drive into the park, the walk may run over the normal two hours and we recommend bringing a lunch. It will take over two hours to drive from Pittsburgh, but the location is beautiful and worth a day trip.

Western Pennsylvania Mushroom club Release and indemnification agreement

This Release and Indemnification Agreement (the “Agreement”) is entered into by and between the Western Pennsylvania Mushroom Club, as it is presently organized and may be later structured (“WPMC”) and the undersigned Member (the “Member”) on this ______ day of ___________________, 20____.

WHEREAS, WPMC is a non-profit educational organization that has as its principal purpose the sharing of mushroom-related information among its members; and

WHEREAS, all officers, directors, identifiers and members serve WPMC in a voluntary capacity and receive no remuneration for their services; and

WHEREAS, in cases where WPMC charges a fee for its forays, walks, lectures and other events (collectively “WPMC Events”), it is doing so only to cover its direct costs and does not operate in a for-profit capacity; and WHEREAS, the Member understands that there is inherent and unavoidable risk in outdoor activities relating to hunting and consuming wild mushrooms. These risks include but are not limited to the dangers of hiking in difficult terrain, the possibility of misidentifying a wild mushroom, and the possible allergic or toxic reaction that some individuals may have to otherwise edible mushrooms.

NOW THEREFORE, the Member hereby agrees to the following:

1. The Member assumes all risks associated with WPMC Events. The Member expressly acknowledges that it is the Member’s sole responsibility to hike safely and to determine whether a wild mushroom may be consumed.

2. The Member releases, holds harmless, and indemnifies the WPMC, its officers, directors, identifiers, and representatives from any and all liability relating to any injury or illness incurred by the Member or the Member’s family members as a result of participation in a WPMC Event.

This Agreement shall be governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. If any portion of the Agreement is declared for any reason to be invalid or unenforceable, such invalidity shall not affect any other provision of the Agreement. This Agreement shall apply to all current and future WPMC events.
