Greetings, fellow adventurers! It is great to be with you again. The Island of Galveston is a new testament to the fortitude of her people and their undying re-solve. People coming out of the mold-free woodwork, most to help, bringing with them what they need, what they have, what they are capable of and/or can offer. It’s a spirit of teamwork, with a 5-story wall of money coming towards us. The only thing left to do is Wax the surfboard until the wave of possibilities hits...uh, you DO know how to surf, don’t you? No hurricane this time! Just the refreshing power washings we’re used to. A reminder, like the rainbow, of our place on this island and earth. We must all be part of the solution. Our Hurricane Pre-paredness, after the fact from the last, and before the far distant next big one, has each of us ready for whatsoever may come, now more than ever. We are Survivors! Browbeaten and downtrodden is not the way to carry yourself towards the successes of your goals. See what you want, and go after it. Putting yourself alongside like-minded individuals helps tremendously, we’ve found. Everything put in your path is done so to make you strong, intelligent, and wise enough to obtain the treasures you seek. Don’t be stingy. If things are going so well that you don’t “NEED” to adver-tise or invest, then it is now your social responsibility to pay it forward, creating even more possibilities in your community. David, I am so sorry I have not let you know or responded before now. Thank you very much for your concern. Just to tell you the rest of the the story, Spring was returned to us a few days ago. We had just put out fliers the day before in the walmart area. A lady who lives on 57th and Bowie saw the poster. She was going to take Spring over to her brothers because she was leaving for Dallas in a couple of hours. She had had him for 6 days. So “cuddle bug” is home. How wonderful is that! Thank you to everyone who kept an eye out for this little guy we were able to get him back. The thing that concerns me, is that fact that Spring has a chip, is registered to us and no one thought to get him scanned or even check the shelter for a lost report. I had four different adds in the paper, contacted all the vets and shelters in the area and put posters wherever we thought a sighting. Thank you so much for keeping in touch with me. Without people like you and those who were aware and looking for him, we would not have him home again. What a blessing and miracle! THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH GALVESTON! To Whom It May Concern:Please allow me to take a few moments of your time. On September

13, 2008 our island was given an ultimate challenge. Being an

islander, homeowner, parent and employee here, I lived through the

changes, tribulations and tension. Not only did the adults of this

island suffer but the children of the island have also been affected

by the results of Hurricane IKE. This brings me to the purpose of

this letter. On September 12th, 2009, we will have a “Celebration of

Endurance” benefiting the children of the island. We are asking for

any donation you may offer to provide a silent auction; all money raised

from the silent auction will be donated to the Galveston YMCA. This

organization has worked hard to provide parents a safe environment

for their children. This event will take place at Crazy Oaks, located at 12410-Stewart

Road, Saturday-September 12th from 2:00 P.M. to Midnight. KGBC

1540 our local radio station will begin advertising this event in August

and will broadcast live the day of the event. Your donation will allow

us to mention you on the air. This is a great way to share and show the

strength of the island people and our will to survive.

We welcome you to join us. We will have several bands performing

throughout the day and into the evening. We hope to have area

Book Review: The Legend of Sander Grant by Marc PhillipsGIANT LEAPS

I just finished the book “The Legend of Sander Grant” (cover at left), by the talented Marc Phillips. Wow! It’s his first novel, and if I were a betting man, I’d wager that it will be far from his last. Marc has showcased several amazing photojournalistic works in previous Galveston Wizard Periodicals (online at www.galvestonwizard.com), so we knew he had talent. Suddenly, (to us, not him) he had written a novel, and I felt com-pelled to do a book report, introducing it to you, our readers, and to also check it out for myself firsthand. I could only assume that this unique work of fiction would, if any-thing, serve as a welcome departure from my own daily grind. As we all do, I had a lot going

on in my life, working 60 hours a week to bring stability back to my life and work here in Galveston, and serving to help myself and fellow Galvestonians in their efforts to do big things. We all have chores to do, dead-lines to meet, and a drive within us that push us to do bigger and better things. Time is flying by, however, for it seems that we were children only yesterday, and tomorrow we may fade away. We’re all learning from each other, our family, and from our envi-ronment, and there’s nothing like a re-spawning island to bring the pressure to make diamonds out of us all here now. We are all so very talented, gifted in different areas of expertise, “giants in the (is)land” ourselves. So what started as an obliga-tion and impending deadline to report my findings to you turned into a wel-

come departure from my hectic sched-ule, forcing me sit or lay down and read this book at hand. This was argu-ably the best thing that could have hap-pened to me, transporting me from my work into the oversized work boots of giant Sander Grant, a giant from a long line of giants. Our story’s hero finds himself in search of where he comes from, why he is what he is, and what the future holds for him. What’s it like to be larg-er than life for the books main charac-ter? What is going on in his oversized brain? What destiny awaits him? $ Hello everybody, The Outsider here. It’s funny how the constants in life are always there, but we don’t notice them until they smack us in the face...and I’ve had all the smacks I can take this year. Until recently, death came only here and there in my life. For instance, an actor or a musician I like dies of an over-dose before their time, or someone I grew up watching on TV passes from natural causes. Now that I’m older I know too that my Grandparents and their friends’ time grows shorter each year. But when death decided to stay a while, that’s when things can get overwhelming. My wife, daughter, niece, and I were on our way back from the beach on the west end, where we had a really nice day. My niece was visiting for the week-end. We don’t all get to hang out that often, so this was special for all of us. We were just about back to the seawall when we see a woman holding a baby is trying to wave down someone for help. I pulled to the side and noticed her crying, yelling in Spanish, pointing to the fishing hole on the other side of the wreaths. I start to walk in that direction to see others by the water also yelling and pointing. I run to the waters edge and a man is pointing in the water. At first all I see is water, then I see him. Before I can think, my body threw itself into the water. I’m swimming toward the man, who is face down, and all I can see is the back of his head and shoulders. As I get closer,

my mind is racing. (How long has he been in there? Did they find him or is he with them? What am I going to see when I flip him over?) My mind could do all the think-ing it wanted, but my body was on auto pilot. I gabbed him and flipped him over. He was bluish-red, but that was it. Another guy went in the water with me. It’s a good thing, because swimming dead weight to the shore is harder than it looks on TV. We got him to the shore and did CPR until the EMS got there. We found out in the news article the next day that he did not make it. I told my mom later, and she said that I was a hero. I said ‘no, that’s just what you’re supposed to do.’ I didn’t know how to feel about it. I didn’t feel good or bad, it just was. I did all I could. I thought, and that was all I could do, and so I started to feel o.k. about it. I told myself that if I was that guy, and he did what I did for him for me, that I would have no hard feelings. But that was only the start. A month or so later my wife’s niece (who is more like her sister and has been raised by my mother in-law most of her life) came to stay the summer with us. She came to spend time with us, get out of the house, see the beach, get some sun, and to relax. She also came because my mother in-law was going to have surgery, and she didn’t want to put her through the worry of her mom/grandma’s recovery. The surgery was fairly serious, but her age and other health problems made it

more so. We were all optimistic when she went in for the surgery. It was hours before we had any news. Then we got word that the surgery was over and she was in recov-ery. After a while we got to see her, and though she was in a lot of pain, she looked good. Her color was good and all that was left was to take it easy and heal. By the third day she was ready to go home. But the morning she was to be released from the hospital, it wasn’t till the late afternoon that they got around to it. During that time, on my way to the store, my wife called in hysterics, so much that all I could under-stand was “I need you!” I rushed to the hos-pital to find my wife sobbing by herself on a bench out front. I had no idea what was wrong, but I figured her mom had taken a turn for the worst. All I could do was hold her while she cried. Then she dropped the bomb. She said that her best friend had died of cardiac arrest the night before. She was our age, with some health issues, but I would have never guessed this. It took some time to really believe it. I thought it was a mistake or a bad joke, but no such luck. She was gone. My wife is strong for everyone who can’t be, and I’m there for her when she can’t be strong for herself. For the next few days it was a lot of cry-ing and laughing and then more crying. Then, just when you think that it’s over and ‘death’ is gone for a while, ‘Knock knock.’ We still had my mother in-law to look after, so my wife focused on her to keep her mind occupied and getting her

well again. She went everyday she could, and did all the things that she could do. My mother in-law by this time should have been getting better, but she was not feeling better. This was the day after my mother in-law went home and the day after my wife’s friend had passed. My wife had left her mom’s house and was almost to the cause-way when her sister in-law called and said she needed to come back to her mom’s. She turned around, and by the time she got back, they were loading her mom in the car and taking her to the emergency room. She lost consciousness at the hospital and never woke up. She was hooked up to machines for a day and a half, then she just slipped away. So we cry and laugh and remember the good, trying to forget the bad, letting things run their course. Some are angry, some blame themselves or others. It makes you reflect on the title question, ‘how does it make you feel?’ I don’t know. Everyone has there own way of dealing. I like to think if that person was watching me, how would they want me to be? Crying for days on end, angrily punching walls or people that had nothing to do with it? Or rather, living every day to its fullest and helping people, not just passing them by. I didn’t think I would have a positive way to end this, but you know the saying “Don’t smash a window without kicking in a door” or something like that? We’ve learned that another little outsider is on the way to bring our spirits up, reminding us that life happens, just not always the way we want or expect.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Ike, a group of Galveston Island residents formed a small group to help revitalize and improve the quality of island life by encouraging artists to relocate and call Galveston home. The name of this group is Artist Homestead Galveston Island. AHGIThe island has a large and varied stock of available housing suitable for a combination of living and studio space. The key is pricing. On a relative basis, Galveston real estate can offer artists currently living and working in high cost locales, the opportunity

to either reduce costs or expand their quarters. Relocating artists will find a well established and growing art community situated only 50 miles from the nation’s fourth largest city.The mission statement of AHGI “is to revitalize Galveston’s deteriorating historic neighborhoods by promoting home ownership by visual and performing artists and those in the arts related professions. A marketing campaign and referral network will showcase Galveston’s unique lifestyle opportunities with the goal of encouraging artists to relocate to

Galveston Island-thereby contributing to its livability and cultural diversity, enhancing its desirability as a visitor destination, and rehabilitating its historic housing stock.”AHGI is an all volunteer effort operating without government funding and independent of governmental controls. This enables the group to streamline its activities and to move quickly unencumbered by bureaucratic review process. An example of this was the ability to go live with a comprehensive website in only six weeks.The organization is now

actively soliciting artists nationally. The marketing effort is designed to lead to those interested to the website.
