OUTGOING EDITORIAL:
Kia Ora; It is with absolute sadness and huge re-gret that this is my last Editorial for Te Reo, but due to increasing work commit-ments, family heath issues and financial commitments I have been finding it in-creasingly difficult to give the Group the full attention it so rightly deserves.
I am forever indebted to Brenda for her support, advice and absolute dedication to the Group – over the past seven years as your editor we have forged a unique friendship and working relationship which I am truly going to miss.
I have been fortunate to work with some remarkable people in our Group who have strived hard to achieve many of our goals. As Convenor Peter has never let me down with his column and the support from our members has never failed to fill the pages of Te Reo. I must also take this opportu-nity to thank Harete for stepping forward as my replacement at this hectic time in our personal lives.
Nevertheless, Vince and I are looking for-

Thank you Bruce for the August Te Reo. It was a great newsletter: easy to read and full of information. Thank you to you, the members, for without your contributions the work of the Editor would be much more difficult.
I am sorry to hear that Bruce is leaving us as Editor. He has done a wonderful job over many years. We welcome Harete Phillips who has taken over the responsi-bilities of editing Te Reo.
Don’t forget to write to the Māori Land Court for your owners’ details, reports and management structures. Detailed reports will help you further your knowl-edge of your land blocks.
Just a reminder that the MIG AGM will not take place over Queens Birthday weekend next year but will be held at Tauranga during the NZSG research weekend in July.

ward to the continuing growth of our new business venture and I am especially look-ing forward to dedicating a little more time to my own research which has been sadly lacking, especially in recent months.
I wish all our members and the Group well for the future – I hope to remain on the MIG Committee and Eddie and I will still maintain the website (which I desperately need to up-date in coming weeks!). The Group is in a good financial position and we currently have an excellent, proactive Committee and our new Whakapapa Research Guide is well advance so I feel confident that I am leaving the Group as editor in a stable position and well afloat.
Thank you again Brenda and I am sorry for giving you such short notice with my de-parture and for letting you and our members down.

This is a hard back book and HUGE - I stag-gered out of the shop carrying it. End notes, index, appendices. 447 pages. Glossy paper, lots of quality black and white photos. If you have a family member who was with C Coy during WW11 you will certainly want to get hold of a copy of this book. NZSG have agreed to buy a copy for the Library. BJ

The Reluctant Hero We are being spoilt for choice with the books being published recently.
This biography of Willie Apiata VC is now in the shops. It is hard back, 255 pages and with a good selection of colour and black and white and colour photographs.

I must admit I’ve not read the book so am in no position to make further comments.
Aporo commandeered our copy and I have been totally absorbed in Nga Tama toa.

FIND YOUR FAMILY AT COASTLANDS 25th—27th October 2008
This three day family history Expo was organized by Kapiti and Otaki branches of NZSG. It was open to the public. A large exhibition, with people to inform and dis-cuss, was staged in the main shopping area. On the first floor was a research room where the Maori Interest Group was but one of the NZSG Interest Groups with a ta-ble. On the same floor was a presentation room where a wide range of workshops took place. Brenda Joyce was allotted the title “How to get started on Whakapapa re-search”.
The highlight of the weekend were presentations of their family histo-ries by Kevin Milne and Anna Kenna of the TV programme Fair Go. Branch members had done all the research, finding an amaz-ing number of records and photo-graphs. Kevin and Anna were enthusiastic and their stories were of absorbing interest to all gene-alogists. These were great ‘how to’ examples of carrying out family history research and I am sure the audience picked up several help-ful tips.

MIG AGM 2009 4th—5th July
TAURANGA RESEARCH WEEKEND
There will not be an NZSG Conference [this is when the MIG also holds our AGM] in 2009 due to the AFFHO Congress being held in January. Instead there will be a Research Weekend in Tauranga 4th—5th July and the NZSG AGM will take place on the Saturday afternoon.
THE MĀORI INTEREST GROUP AGM will therefore also be held in Tauranga during this Research Weekend—further details will be advised in the next newsletter.

DESPERATELY WANTED – EDITOR FOR TE REO
Bruce is no longer able to edit Te Reo due to other demands on his time. He has done a brilliant job for nearly eight years so now we need a new Editor.
Sadly, if no one can volunteer Te Reo will have to fold. If you think you could do the job please contact Brenda Joyce [email protected]
The Editor will need to;
Be in frequent contact by email with other committee members.
Be familiar with using email and word processing.
Work in a timely fashion so that Te Reo is published mid month in February, May, August and November every year.
Produce quality work on a CD ready for the printers. The Editor is not required to arrange printing or envelope stuffing.
A template will be provided for you to work with. Content will be provided by Com-mittee members though contributions from the Editor would be appreciated. The new Editor will be offered all assistance from Bruce Mathers and Brenda Joyce.
SUPPLEMENTAL EDITORIAL:
Kia Ora; As you would have read in the August newsletter and also from my farewell edi-torial in this issue, I am finding it difficult to remain the editor of Te Reo. In re-sponse to our plea for my replacement in the previous issue, Harete PHILLIPS kindly offered to take up the challenge.
Unfortunately Harete seems to be experi-encing difficulties with both her email and the templates of Te Reo on DVD which we supplied to help get her started with this issue. So at the request of Brenda and certainly without hesitation I have more than willingly compiled this issue to help out and to get us through this transitional period. I apologize if the content therefore seems a little confusing (literally with my coming and going!) especially with our Convenor’s Corner and my own “Outgoing Editorial” on page 4 but as this material had already been supplied for the newslet-ter and in an attempt to save further lost time I have included these reports on page four unedited.
Therefore, we still need someone to step forward to offer their services as the MIG Editor, and I must stress prompt and regular email contact (almost daily) with Brenda is essential. The newsletter is

compiled using Word and Publisher and templates, back issues and logos etcetera will be supplied on DVD to help the new Editor get started. I am well aware that I am by no stretch of the imagination an expert in publishing, but the newsletter must also maintain an acceptable level of print quality as many Public Libraries, National Library and Universities sub-scribe to the newsletter, including three (3) copies each issue to the National Li-brary so our public exposure is great (as well as being online), so we must be able to produce an acceptable copy of Te Reo for the public and for our subscribers. It has always been my wish to see Te Reo printed in colour, so perhaps the new Editor will be able to achieve this goal also.
The Committee has all but finished our updated Whakapapa Research Guide, Owen ORMSBY has returned the final draft to Brenda after scrutinizing all our contributions and updates and Lorraine RICE has kindly offered to proof read the final draft before returning the final draft to Brenda for actual printing. It is our aim to launch the new version of our booklet at the 2009 AFFHO Conference in January.
Brenda has again represented the group, this time at the Coastlands Family History Expo, which was hosted by the Kapiti and Otaki Branches of the NZSG at Paraparaumu over the 25th to 27th Octo-ber – see pages 8 and 9 for further details and preparations are now underway for our AGM and Research Table in Tauranga on the 4th and 5th July next year – the day and time of the MIG AGM will be an-nounced closer to the date.
Again I hope we can find someone willing-and-able to take on the role as Editor but I cannot emphasis enough, how enor-mously important it is to have regular email contact with Brenda, in fact it is absolutely paramount in getting the news-letter compiled.
The new editor must also be mindful of
our image and be willing to improve on both the quality and content of our maga-zine (I am sure with my limited skills, not a difficult ask!). I can assure you it has been a long and hard process to bring the MIG back from the depths of recess be-tween February 1996 and March 1997 to where we are today. We now have a strong financial base and our resources have increased tenfold through our own hard endeavours and the support of the FRC and generous koha from our mem-bers. Our current committee in particular is extremely proactive which can be traced back to a revitalization of the group under the committees of 1999-2000 which had not been seen since the enthusiasm of the original founders of the group in 1993, and as an Interest Group today we have worked hard to increase our profile and Mana which is now one of strength, power and also strength of character - a great way to show pride in our culture so it would be a great pity to lose all that we have achieved on the basis of a mediocre, inferior newsletter.
Finally I would like to take this opportu-nity to wish you all a very Merry Christ-mas and a Safe and Happy New Year. We look forward to your continuing support in 2009 and especially through our AGM in July. I extend my sincerest and heart-felt thanks to all our members who have supported the group and especially the newsletter in my tenure as Editor.

CAN YOU HELP? INFORMATION WANTED—CONTACT SOUGHT
Steve Agnew [email protected] has some information about his John Fisher and if any reader has suggestions about how he could further his research he would be most grateful to hear from you.
John FISHER
Records of this period are sparse and I have no Iwi or parents’ names. I have in-cluded the information below which I have found on John Fisher:
The name of John Fisher does not show up in any of the early European settler records. However the name does appear in the Papers Past web site. The Wesleyan Journal Sept 1845 refers to a native Maori by the name John Fisher who gives his testimony to the grace of God in his life. I understand that it was not uncommon during this period of time for a Maori per-son to adopt a European name at the time of his baptism and conversion to Christi-anity. In his testimony, interpreted by Rev T Buddle, he is recorded as saying: “there are no riches to be compared with the riches of grace; the riches of this world are nothing, no, nothing….”.
It appears that the same John Fisher crops up again in the book “The Maori King Movement of New Zealand”. Some-where around 1859/1860 he is recorded as supporting a speedy peaceful and pru-dent land settlement to avoid bitterness. He must have been a man of some stand-ing as he was in the position of listening to the thoughts of several Maori chiefs.
The Maori transliteration of John Fisher is Hone Piha. This name appears in a Maori newspaper of 1844. It reports a letter writ-ten in 1843 and signed by a number of known Maori Chiefs. Hone Piha’s name is amongst that list. The letter discusses a number of issues including threats from Hone Heke against Ngati Whatua and Te Rarawa. While the evidence is not strong it certainly supports the case that John Fisher may have been a Chief amongst his own people.

It is my opinion that John Fisher was engaged/employed by the Executive and Legis-lative Council to carry out some duties on behalf of the Colonial Government on Great Barrier Island. I have however been unable to precisely find that link.

MĀORI KAI
In the Noema 2007 newsletter we started a series of articles on Māori Kai. We hope to include articles on both traditional and contemporary meals and I welcome any sugges-tions and contributions from our members – if you have a family recipe or any cooking ideas or know of a traditional food which sustained our ancestors, please send them in. What has this to do with Whakapapa? You may well ask. When studying family history the more you know of the life styles of the people – how they lived and why – the richer will be your understanding of your families. BJ
Toroi Mussels (Brewed or Fermented Mussels) It is very Important that you know the Source of your Ingredients for this Recipe they must come from a pollutant free source) Bunch of Puha- Cleaned—no flowers 10 steamed mussels Steam the mussels until their shells open. Keep the juice. Chop Mussel up. Lightly cook the puha in water, then rinse in cold water, drain well & chop finely. Place in a jar. Pour the mussel juice onto the puha. Add the chopped mussels to the puha and toss. Store in the fridge - the colder the better! (last 2 months) Taste Beautiful. ********* Mutton Bird (Titi) Place 2 Birds in a pot of Cold water till it covers the birds. Boil one hour. Let the water cool in the fridge scoop off the fat (don’t discard the fat set it aside) then discard the water. Repeat the process again exactly the same way. When that is done rub the cooled fat over the birds and store in the fridge..if they can even last that long. These are to good to describe. Our Ancestors used the fat as a way to store the mutton bird, but it also has a lot of flavour and nutrients. ********** Rewena Paraoa (Levened Bread)
Leaven/Bug/Plant/Starter/Rawena (whatever you call it) 900mls water 1 large potato 2 cups flour 1 tsp sugar Boil potato with all the water to mashing stage When cooked mash potato with flour and sugar. Put everything into a jar or bowl (nothing aluminium thou) to ferment and cover with plastic or cloth. This could take a day or two. I have to warn you it has a terrible smell.
Moving on to making the Bread 600mls of Leaven/Bug/Plant/Starter/Rewena 6 cups flour 3 tbsp sugar

1 tsp salt Mix all ingredients together and leave to rest at least 6-8 hours covered in a warm area. The mixture will rise or double in size during this time. Then knead the dough until it is firm you will have to flour it a bit its very sticky. So you can either cut it into disks then leave them 15minutes and fry in Lard or Put in bread pans and leave aside some-where warm until the bread doubles in size takes about 60minsThen bake at 200c for 45 – 50 minutes. It’s been a few years since we have made it this way. ********** Fry Bread 7grams or 2 1/4 Tsp Active Dry Yeast 1 1/2 Cups Warm Water 1 Tbsp Sugar 2 Tbsp Olive Oil 4 Cups -Flour 1 1/2 Tsp Salt Place the yeast & sugar into a bowl and add the water give a stir and let it activate over 10minutes. Add the Olive Oil ,Salt and Flour and Mix to well combined (These days I put it in my kenwood mixer with the dough hook on). Roll out to an inch thick ,cut into circles , rest the dough for 15minutes then fry in Lard( I know I go on about Lard but it taste better ) As kids we ate them with butter and Golden Syrup. :How we eat them Now a Days: *We use the above recipe for our Pizza Bases *Fry Smaller disks & Dip in Sugar and
cinnamon mix while still hot *Cover in Strawberry Jam & Top with Whipped Cream *Make larger disks fry them when cooled slice open like pita bread fill with salad and fried fish with tartar sauce. ********** Kanga Kopiro (Fermented or Rotten Corn) also known as Kaanga Wai (Cured Corn) Originally Corn Cobs were dried in the sun, then placed in a kete (flax bag) and placed in a flowing stream for 2 to 3 months till the corn was rotten then it is cut off the cob place in a pot and heated up like porridge and served with Cream & Honey..Here how it’s done these days Cut corn of the cob and place in a jar cover with water, replace with fresh cold water daily for 2 months (till its rotten again it doesn't smell pretty) then heat up in a pot and make like porridge adding water as needed to make a big slurry of corn (like creamed corn) then serve hot with Cream & Sugar. Its strong like BlueVein Cheese ********** Kaanga Wai Custard 1 Cup of Kaanga Wai 1 TButter 2TSugar 2 Cups Milk 1 Egg beaten Beat everything together and bake in the oven on a low heat till golden brown. Serve with a Splosh of Cream. **********

MIG OBJECTIVES
1/. To assist others researching Māori Whakapapa by way of sharing our knowledge of areas of research.
2/. To compile a list of repositories, books etc that will assist with Māori research.
3/. To acquire books purchased through the Māori Inter-est Group and from donations [and group badge pro-ceeds] for all [NZ] members to use.
4/. It is noted we will not be researching for others but offering assistance to give others a channel of research that may help them. We have a research officer who will offer assistance in an advisory capacity.

MIG Subscription: As from the 1st November 2001 Membership of the New Zealand Society of Genealogist Māori Interest Group is free to all Financial Members of the New Zealand Society of Genealogists.

Tukutuku P)anel. Dyed flax woven over strips of wood to produce a design of a series of steps or putama. These steps represent the staircase to heaven that the god Tane climbed to get the three baskets of knowledge for the Māori people.
• Te kete-tuatea (basket of light, present knowledge) • Te kete-tuauri (basket of darkness, things unknown) • Te kete-aronui (basket of pursuit, knowledge humans currently seek)
The steps can also be seen as generations on a whakapapa or family tree chart. Thus the logo represents learning and family history research. BJ
