The works bequeathed by architect Rogelio Salmona are an additional tourist attraction as much by the quality of their buildings and urban spaces as by their documentary value in the urban development of Bogota.

Rogelio Salmona’s master work in addition to its meaning for the national architecture history, it is a cultural product to be red in brick color tones, in lights and shades, as a point of reference of popular aesthetic, as an expression of collective memory and as an exploration of a personal speech of the urban universe. The work integration of architecture and urbanism to the subject of the Cultural Tourism in Bogotá, is an important step for the mixing of a model of management of the sustainable cultural patrimony, that participates in the economic dynamics of the city.

For the last 60 years the urban development and exponential growth of Bogota has undertaken disorganized processes causing a negative impact in many ecosystems and rural communities. The city hunger has been fueled by both legal and illegal actions where the government has been responsible for many inner displacements pressuring farmers

and people living from agriculture to either move to further rural areas or converting from a rural to an urban way of life, most of the time undesirable for these communities.

An example of heroic resistance and counter pressure can be found in the south oriental limits of the city. A community initiative that through a peaceful and intelligent process convinced high spheres in the local administration to change law ranking decrees.

The same day the victory came with the annulation of the decrees this community created the Agroparque los Soches. A community based rural tourism project which main objective is to create a sustainable model for this community to safeguard its rural way of life.

Everyday during your stay in Bogotá you will see these overwhelming “guardians” at the east of the city and you will wonder what´s the story behind them. The good news is that current public and private efforts are preventing the east mountain range to be devoured by both legal and illegal construction saving an unique ecosystem that withholds the greatest diversity of wildlife ( flora & fauna ) found in the city. It is particularly interesting

how urban and rural areas meet at this threshold that has been recovered from the verge of its termination at the end of the XX century.

Nowadays, this environmental haven is open to the public (with restrictions) and makes a heck of a walk to wonder in its linear shape path surrounded by some of the most pompous residential buildings. Currently a conservation mega project wants to blind this ecosystem by transforming the oriental mountain range within Bogotá in a huge park preventing once and for all the invasion of this green area.

Corabastos is the second biggest food plaza in South America. This true gastronomic haven is vivid and busy early in the morning where fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and other food deliquesces arrive from all over the country to supply the need of a bustling city of 8 million people requiring over 4,000 workers generating a flow of over 500,000 people during a normal day. The visit will highlight and embrace the work of thousands of individuals and families that day by day assist to the plaza as drivers, coteros (people unloading the food), logistics, buyers and sellers, complementary services (lottery games, cooked food and all sorts of products and services) plus the complex and many times rough situations facing this commercial activity.

Our host, Helena Salguero, the maker of the documentary “Sinfonía de Mercado” , Market`s Symphony, a masterpiece shot in Corabastos will introduce us to this world where she has spent quality time over the last 3 years under the interesting perspective of honoring the work of the people at the market with an audiovisual proposal winner of a grant of the local administration of Bogotá.

The “red district” of Bogotá, also called, the high impact zone is the only legal area in the city where prostitution is legal. Following the example of Amsterdam this is an attempt from the local administration to consolidate inclusive processes, have more control over the situation and establish a better grasp of prostitution, an activity that is present in most medium and large cities around the world.

It becomes necessary to walk this area to create your own opinion on how well or not things are going with this process.

Governments in Bogotá, as in the rest of Colombia, have been avoiding for a long time the formulation of concrete policies regarding waste uses and recycling. Meanwhile an informal sector coming from the poorest areas of the city has been living from collecting potentially useful materials from what general citizens had already considered garbage by throwing them away or setting them on the streets. Today there are more than twelve thousand people living from this activity and around sixty thousand (their families) depending on their work in Bogota.

We would like to introduce you the social and political processes of the (ARB) Cooperative Association of Bogota’s Recyclers. As accompanying one journey of waste collection, stockpiling and selling in the buy-back centers guided by local “recyclers” who are now working in defense of the recycling sector aware of the social and environmental services

given daily by them to the whole community. About 30% of the value will go towards a donation on uniforms and other immediate needs to the Cooperative.

One of the main objectives of organizing hand by hand with the ARB this tour is to develop alternative ways of income for the cooperative and gradually generate income with added value services than their main activity of collecting waste material.

Additional to the learning journey specified in the latest section we can organize a recycling live experience following a group of recyclers on their circuit in the north area of Bogotá ( behind Unicentro shopping mall ) at night. The days available for this experience are monday, wednesday and friday. The experience would not have any costs and it will be open for other foreigners and colombians interested.
