1. PurposeThe Blue Medora VMware vRealize Operations (vROps) Management Pack for MongoDB User Guide describes the primary features of the Management Pack for MongoDB, including dashboards, views, reports, metrics, and alerts that allow users to optimize the monitoring of MongoDB resources from within vRealize Operations.

2. Introduction to the Management PackThe Management Pack for MongoDB is an embedded adapter for vRealize Operations (vROps) that monitors MongoDB databases remotely. The Management Pack retrieves data regarding MongoDB resources by connecting to a specified mongos or mongod instance.

This section includes the following topics:• How the Management Pack Collects Data• Data the Management Pack Collects

2.1 How the Management Pack Collects DataDuring each data collection cycle, the Management Pack opens a MongoDB Client connection to the configured mongos/mongod and queries it to retrieve metrics regarding database resources.

The collection interval for the adapter instance resource determines how often the Management Pack collects data. The default collection interval is five minutes.

The Management Pack supports Autodiscovery and manual discovery of resources. When you enable Autodiscovery for an adapter instance, the Management Pack creates resources in vRealize Operations and collects data after the main collection query runs. If a new resource belongs to a resource kind that does not exist in vROps, the Management Pack creates the resource kind.

2.2 Data the Management Pack CollectsThe Management Pack can collect performance data, relationships (associations), and events for the following MongoDB resources:1. MongoDB database 2. Cluster3. Mongod4. Mongos5. Config Server6. Shard7. Replica Set

2.3 Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec)The Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec) feature within vROps allows you to easily navigate your environment. The hierarchical structure implicitly shows relationships among resource kinds and enables quick drill-downs to root-cause issues.

3. DashboardsDashboards are the primary user interface that allow users to monitor MongoDB resources from within vRealize Operations.

The following dashboards are available in the Management Pack:

3.1 MongoDB OverviewThe MongoDB Overview dashboard provides at-a-glance heatmaps depicting the overall health of your MongoDB resources (mongos instances, mongods, shards, databases, etc.). Figure 2: MongoDB Overview Dashboard


3.2 MongoDB Health InvestigationThe MongoDB Health Investigation dashboard displays the current active alerts in your MongoDB environment. When an alert is selected, health information and key performance indicators (KPIs) related to the affected resource are shown, along with a Topology (relationships) view of the resource and health information for its parent and child resources.

3.3 MongoDB EnvironmentThe MongoDB Environment dashboard depicts your MongoDB environment from your top-level resources, down through the hierarchy. Selecting any resource from the Environment Selector will populate health, KPIs, and properties information for that resource.

3.4 MongoDB IOPSThe MongoDB IOPS dashboard allows you to select a node to view IOPS metrics for that mongos/mongod resource. You can also select a related virtual machine or datastore view IOPS metrics for those resources.

3.5 MongoDB Mongos InstancesThe MongoDB Mongos Instances dashboard allows you to select a database and Mongos instance to drill-down into opcounters, asserts, memory, connections, network, and page faults information for that Mongos instance.

3.6 MongoDB DatabasesThe MongoDB Databases dashboard allows you to select a Mongos instance and database to view health, KPIs, topology (relationships), and top alerts for the database.

3.7 MongoDB Replica SetsThe MongoDB Replica Sets dashboard allows you to select a replica set to view opcounters, network, memory, topology (relationships), cache, and connections information for the selected resource.

3.8 MongoDB MongodsThe MongoDB Mongods dashboard allows you to select a mongod resource to view opcounters, memory, topology (relationships), cache, connections, and network information for the selected resource.

4. ViewsThe vROps Management Pack for MongoDB creates views that allow the user to view statistics of metrics for various MongoDB resources. The views help give a broad picture of the entire system, as opposed to a more in depth view.

To access the Management Pack views, go to Environment > All Objects > MongoDB and double-click on the desired Object (resource). Select the Details tab, then Views. The available views for that resource are listed and can be selected.The views available in the Management Pack are:

5. ReportsThe vROps Management Pack for MongoDB contains out-of-the-box reports, as listed below. Most reports contain one or more of the views listed in section “4. Views”. These reports can be exported and easily shared with key stakeholders in either .pdf or .csv formats.

To access the Management Pack reports, go to Environment > All Objects > MongoDB and double-click on the desired Object (resource). Select the Reports tab, then Report Templates.

To run the selected report, click the Run Template icon ( ), then click Generated Reports, to select the report in your preferred format.


6. AlertsThe Management Pack for MongoDB pulls health status and events from MongoDB resources and displays them in vRealize Operations as alerts. Refer to section “10. Appendix II: Alerts, Symptoms, & Recommendations” for the full list of alerts, symptoms, and recommendations.

7. Analysis BadgesUsing the predictive analytics capabilities of the vROps Analysis Badges through capacity definitions, the Management Pack for MongoDB populates Connections Capacity for the mongos and mongod resource kinds. Refer to section. “11. Appendix III: Capacity Definitions”.

8. Troubleshooting the Management PackKnown troubleshooting information can help you diagnose and correct common problems with the Management Pack for MongoDB.

8.1 Troubleshooting an Adapter InstancePerform these general troubleshooting steps to diagnose and correct problems with an adapter instance:

• Edit the adapter instance and click Test Connection to verify the connection to vROps. Refer to section “8.2 Testing Connection Failures”.

• View the collection status and collection state for the adapter instance resource on the Environment Overview page in vROps.

• Check the adapter and collector logs for errors. Refer to section “8.3 Viewing System Log Files”, for details.

8.2 Testing Connection FailuresWhen clicking Test Connection in the Manage Solution window when adding an adapter instance, the following connection errors are possible.

8.2.1 Authentication FailedError: “Authentication failed. Please check your credentials and/or SSL certificate.”Action: Ensure that your MongoDB user name and password is correct the SSL certificate is valid if ‘Validate Certificate Against Truststore’ Advanced Settings configuration field is set to True.

8.2.2 SSL Authentication RequiredError: “SSL Authentication Required.”Action: Ensure that SSL is enabled (set to True) in the appropriate Advanced Settings configuration field.

8.2.3 PKIX Path Building FailedError: “PKIX path building failed. Unable to find valid certification path to requested target.”Action: Ensure that the SSL certificate is in the correct truststore.

8.2.4 Change Authentication Type to ‘Default’Error: “Change Authentication Type to ‘Default’. Unsupported mechanism PLAIN”Action: Change Authentication Type to ‘Default’ when adding your credential.

8.2.5 MongoClient does not have any server addressesError: “MongoClient does not have any server addresses.”Action: Ensure that connections can be made to the hostnames listed in the Host configuration field.

8.2.6 Not authorized on admin to execute commandError: “Not authorized on admin to execute command <command> with username=”<username>” to on <host>/admin>.”Action: Make sure the user being used for this host has permissions to run the specified command.


8.2.7 Unable to find databases with server addressError: “Unable to find databases with server address list <hosts>.”Action: Make sure the specified host has databases.

8.2.8 Could not create any MongoClientsError: “Could not create any MongoClients connecting to mongods.”Action: Make sure the mongods are up.

8.3 Viewing System Log FilesYou can view adapter errors in the adapter and collector log files. You can view the adapter and collector log files in the vROps user interface or in an external log viewer.

The adapter log files are in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/log/adapters/mongodb_adapter3/ folder. The collector log files are in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/log/ folder.The logging level is set to ERROR by default. To troubleshoot issues, set the logging level to INFO. To view detailed messages, including micro steps, queries, and returned results, set the logging level to DEBUG.You can set the base log level for the collector via Administrator > Support > Logs > Select COLLECTOR folder > Select Edit Properties icon > Edit Root logger level.

NOTE: If you set the logging level to DEBUG, log files can become large very quickly. Set the logging level to DEBUG only for short periods of time.

A replica set should always have an odd number of members so there is never a tie when voting for the primary host. Either add another replicated host, or add an arbiter to the replica set.

Three data-bearing nodes are required for replica-set wide data durability.

Mongod Shares a Host This alert indicates that an Immediate alert was raised in MongoDB.

Running multiple mongod instances on a single host increases the likelihood of having inaccessible data by reducing horizontal scaling.

Mongod Is Recovering From Delay


This instance is in RECOVERING mode.

Mongod Has a Delay Behind the Primary


This node has very high replication delays. Delayed nodes can cause out-of-date data to be presented.

Mongos Ratio of Page-Faults to Operations Greater than or Equal to 1


There are a large number of page faults. Consider increasing memory provisioning.

Mongos is Reaching a Congested Level of Connections


Number of connections has greatly increased compared to normal. Large numbers of connections use large amounts of memory, so be sure to provision adequate memory on the host.

Config Server Has no Configured Replica Set


A production config server should always be configured as a replica set; when configured as a single host, if that host goes down, the entire cluster becomes inaccessible.

Shard Has No Configured Replica Set


If a shard is not configured with a replica set, then if the host it is configured with goes down, none of the data on that host will be available. Configuring the shard as a replica set provides better fallback, allowing for a system with higher-availability.
