1. PurposeThe Blue Medora VMware vRealize Operations (vROps) Management Pack for F5 BIG-IP User Guide describes the primary features of the Management Pack for F5 BIG-IP, including dashboards, reports, alerts, and metrics that allow users to optimize the monitoring and management of F5 BIG-IP resources from within vRealize Operations.

2. Introduction to the Management PackThe Management Pack for F5 BIG-IP is an embedded adapter for vRealize Operations (vROps) that monitors F5 BIG-IP systems remotely. It connects through the F5 BIG-IP iControl REST API to retrieve data regarding BIG-IP systems and their performance.This section includes the following topics:

2.1 How the Management Pack Collects DataDuring each data collection cycle, the Management Pack opens an F5 BIG-IP iControl REST API connection to F5 BIG-IP and queries it to retrieve metrics for F5 BIG-IP resources.

The collection interval for the adapter instance resource determines how often the Management Pack collects data. The default collection interval is five minutes.

The Management Pack supports Auto Discovery and manual discovery of resources. When you enable Auto Discovery for F5 BIG-IP adapter instance, the Management Pack creates resources in vRealize Operations and collects data after the main collection query runs. If a new resource belongs to a resource kind that does not exist in vROps, the Management Pack creates the resource kind.

2.2 Data the Management Pack CollectsThe Management Pack can collect performance data, relationships (associations), and events for the following F5 BIG-IP resources:1. F5 BIG-IP Adapter Instance2. F5 BIG-IP Device Group (requires F5 BIG-IP Admin access)

2.3 Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec)The Inventory Tree (Traversal Spec) feature in vROps allows you to easily navigate your F5 environment. The hierarchical structure implicitly shows relationships among resources and enables quick drill-downs to root-cause issues.

2.4 External Relationships to other Management PacksIn addition to external relationships to the VMware virtual layer, this Management Pack includes external relationships for Blue Medora True Visibility Suite customers who are also using Blue Medora’s vROps Management Packs for Nutanix (v6.0.10600013) or KVM (v6.0.10100004). The following external relationships between F5 BIG-IP and other resources can be discovered: • F5 Node --> Nutanix VM • F5 Node --> KVM VM • F5 Device --> Nutanix VM • F5 Device --> KVM VM

3. DashboardsDashboards are the primary user interface that allow users to monitor F5 BIG-IP resources from within vRealize Operations.

3.1 F5 BIG-IP Health OverviewThe Health Overview dashboard displays heatmaps depicting the overall health of F5 BIG-IP resources being monitored (systems, virtual servers, applications, pools, nodes, etc.). Figure 2: F5 BIG-IP Health Overview Dashboard


3.2 F5 BIG-IP World OverviewThe World Overview dashboard displays scoreboards and health-related heatmaps for your entire F5 BIG-IP environment, including major components, pool components, and LTM components.

3.3 F5 BIG-IP Health InvestigationThe Health Investigation dashboard displays health status badges for the resources in your F5 BIG-IP environment. To drill down further and investigate the health details for a particular resource, click on its badge from the BIG-IP Environment widget to populate its top alerts, status, performance sparklines, and key performance metric graphs.

3.4 F5 BIG-IP SystemThe System dashboard displays top alerts, health information, a performance scoreboard, and a property list for your selected F5 BIG-IP system.

3.5 F5 BIG-IP ApplicationThe Application dashboard displays health information, properties, and Server Side and Client Side Network key performance metrics (KPIs) for the selected application and related virtual server, pool, and pool members.

3.6 F5 BIG-IP Node VM MashupThe Node VM Mashup dashboard allows you to select a pool, pool member, and their associated nodes and virtual machines to view health, performance, and key performance metrics (KPIs) side-by-side.

3.7 F5 BIG-IP Application to NutanixThe Application to Nutanix dashboard displays health-related heatmaps and KPIs starting with your F5 applications and continuing down the stack, all the way to the associated Nutanix VM. Select a resource from the heatmap widgets to populate KPIs for each resource.

3.8 Nutanix VM to F5 BIG-IP ApplicationThe Nutanix VM to F5 BIG-IP Application dashboard allows you to select a Nutanix VM and its associated F5 resources to view KPIs up and down the stack.

4. ViewsThe vROps Management Pack for F5 BIG-IP contains custom views, which allow the user to view statistics of metrics for F5 BIG-IP resources. Views provide a “big picture” look at resources, as opposed to a more in depth view.

To access the Management Pack views, go to Environment > All Objects > F5 BIG-IP and double-click on the desired Object (resource kind). Select the Details tab, then Views. Select the desired view from the list to populate the statistics below.

5. ReportsThe vROps Management Pack for F5 BIG-IP contains the following custom reports. Each report can be exported and easily shared with key stakeholders in either .pdf or .csv formats.

To access the Management Pack reports, go to Environment > All Objects > F5 BIG-IP and double-click on the desired Object (resource kind). Select the Reports tab, then Report Templates.

6. AlertsThe vROps Management Pack for F5 BIG-IP pulls health status and events from F5 BIG-IP resources and displays them in vRealize Operations as alerts. The critical levels of each alert are closely mapped from F5 BIG-IP to vROps. Refer to “10. Appendix II: Alerts” for the full list of alerts, symptoms, and recommendations provided by this Management Pack.

7. Analysis BadgesUsing the predictive analytics capabilities of the vROps Analysis Badges through capacity definitions, theManagement Pack populates capacity and utilization breakdowns for F5 BIG-IP systems. Refer to section “11. Appendix III: Capacity Definitions” for the full list of capacity definitions.

8. Troubleshooting the Management PackKnown troubleshooting information can help you diagnose and correct common problems with the Management Pack for F5 BIG-IP.

8.1 Troubleshooting an Adapter InstancePerform these general troubleshooting steps to diagnose and correct problems with an adapter instance:

• Edit the adapter instance and click Test Connection to verify the connection to vROps. Refer to section “8.2 Testing Connection Failures”.

• View the collection status and collection state for the adapter instance resource on the Environment Overview page in vROps.

• Check the adapter and collector logs for errors. Refer to section “8.3 Viewing System Log Files”, for details.

8.2 Testing Connection FailuresWhen you click Test Connection in the Manage Solution window while configuring an adapter instance, the following connection errors are possible.

8.2.1 Unable to Authenticate with User Name and PasswordEnsure the correct F5 BIG-IP User Name and Password was entered.

8.2.2 Unable to Reach Host and PortEnsure the correct port number and F5 BIG-IP Management IP or DNS name was entered for your F5 BIG-IP System.

8.2.3 User Credentials Do Not Have Enough PermissionsYou must have a minimum of an Auditor user role with iControl REST API access assigned to your F5 BIG-IP credentials.

8.2.4 Detected a physical device, but ‘Virtual’ is selected as license typeEnsure the correct license type is selected in the Manage Solution window when configuring your adapter instance.


8.3 Viewing System Log FilesYou can view F5 BIG-IP adapter errors in the adapter and collector log files. You can view the adapter and collector log files in the vROps user interface or in an external log viewer.

The adapter log files are in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/log/adapters/BigIpAdapter/ folder. The collector log files are in the $VCOPS_BASE/user/log/ folder.

The logging level is set to ERROR by default. To troubleshoot issues, set the logging level to INFO. To view detailed messages, including micro steps, queries, and returned results, set the logging level to DEBUG.

You can set the base log level for the collector via Administrator -> Support -> Logs -> Select COLLECTOR folder -> Select Edit Properties icon -> Edit Root logger level.

NOTE: If you set the logging level to DEBUG, log files can become large very quickly. Set the logging level to DEBUG only for short periods of time.
