one.

The Culinary Arts and Hospitality II class is very excited to create a custom cookbook featuring favorite
recipes from our Voyager Academy Families! This will be the first edition of the Voyager Vikings
Cookbook. We want this to be a K-12 collaboration of staff and families! Information regarding an art
contest for the cover page will be sent out in the next week. These cookbooks will be professionally
published and are sure to be a treasured keepsake for us all. Money raised will be used to support the
Culinary Arts Department.
Please submit 3-5 of your favorite recipes so you can be represented in our cookbook! Many recipes from
all of our staff and families will ensure that our cookbook is a success. We cannot guarantee that all
recipes will make the final cut (i.e. if we receive 15 recipes for apple pie, we will not be able to print all of
them). We are using Morris Press Cookbook’s web site to easily submit recipes online (see below). If you
do not have Internet access, please submit hardcopies of your recipes to Kylie Koerner at VAHS, and we
will enter them for you.
We anticipate a great demand for our cookbooks, and we want to be certain to order enough. To reserve
your copies, email Kylie Koerner at [email protected], with the number of cookbooks you
will be purchasing. The slip below may also be given to Kylie Koerner. Cookbooks will be available at a
cost of $15 each.

Elementary Update:
Dear VAES Families,
This week is our Jump Rope for Heart event and the students are very excited. Our goal this year is
$7,500. As of today, we have raised $3,400. There is still time for you to donate to the American Heart
Association and support our Jump Rope for Heart event. In PE, the students are doing many
cardiovascular activities, including jumping rope. The students are having a lot of fun while getting their
hearts pumping!! I have included some terrific pictures below. Enjoy!!
I have noticed that some students have been bringing electronics to school. I know students enjoy using
these items when they have free choice time during snack, lunch, or recess. However, the teachers have
the authority to ask students and parents not to bring these items to school, if they see that it is disrupting
the learning in the classroom. Also, I would caution parents from sending in expensive devices with their
children. As you know, students misplace and lose things. I would hate for a child’s iPad, tablet, phone,
etc. to be lost or stolen.
Next week is Staff Appreciation Week. We are all very excited about the events that the PTO has
planned for us!! The VAES Staff appreciate all you do to support us throughout the year!!!! Thank you!!
Best,
Leslie Paynter
VAES Principal
Jump Rope for Heart Activities this week!!
Message from our PE teachers, Mrs. Derrick and Mrs. Flowe-Dawson:
We are hoping to reach our goal of $7500 to aid the American Heart Association with their research. If
we reach our goal, Mrs. Paynter will dress -up as Rory the Lion and greet you in car line. Let's make this
happen!!!! Students can make donations online or bring their donations in the envelope that was sent
home last week. The student in each grade level who raises the most money will get to be the Physical
Education teacher for their class for a day! They will plan their lesson with us, and then teach it to their
peers, while we are the Teacher Assistant. Yippee!!
For every $1,500 VAES raises, we will receive a $100 gift certificate to US Games. With these gift
certificates, we are able to buy equipment for your students to use and enjoy during Physical Education.
Thank you so much for your support,
Brenda Derrick and Marie Flowe-Dawson
VAES Teacher Appreciation Week Staff Luncheon:

Teachers would love to have lunch coverage so they can relax and enjoy the meal. Thanks in advance.

recipes. To follow the family theme of our book, we are holding a contest and requesting cover art
submissions from Voyager students, faculty, and their families. The winner of this contest will receive
one free cookbook, as well as have their art displayed, along with their name, on the cover of the

feature in the cover illustration. Please feel free to be as creative as possible, for we are open to all
suggestions and ideas. All submissions are due by Friday, February 17, 2017. Submissions can be sent

Inclement Weather:
Please remember that we will follow the DPS inclement weather advisories including delays, closings,
and early dismissals. So, if DPS is closed, we will be closed. If DPS has a two hour delay, we will have a
two hour delay. If DPS, has an early release due to inclement weather, we will dismiss early too. If you
see that DPS is closed, delayed, or releasing early and you have not seen something for Voyager, know
that we will be doing the same thing as DPS. We will post these on our website, send a school connects
message, and we will send a REMIND text, as soon as we can. Please do not call the school as soon as
you see the DPS post to ask if we are closing, etc. Please give us time to send the phone, email, and text
messages. Do call us if there will be a change in who will pick-up your child. On Friday, we were so
overwhelmed with the phone calls asking if we were dismissing early that it was difficult to assist the
families that needed to talk to inform of us a change in their child’s schedule and/or pick-up.

Middle School Update:
Hello Voyager Middle School Families,
It’s been a terrific week at Voyager Middle School! It’s hard to believe that we are at the mid-quarter
mark for the 3rd quarter. Progress reports will be sent home tomorrow with our 4th and 5th graders. Our
fifth graders will also take home a copy of their mid-year benchmark results. I am very proud of our
students and the effort they put into these benchmarks.
Our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders do not receive a paper copy of a progress report. You are able to view their
grades in PowerSchool. All grades should be entered by the end of the day tomorrow. These grades
reflect the first half of the third nine weeks. Our 6th-8th graders will also receive a copy of their
benchmark results. Please ask your child for their results.
Mr. Smith and I are meeting with each grade level to remind the students of the expectations that we have
of all of them. The expectations include: completing assignments on time, turning assignments in on
time, getting to class on time, being present and an active participant in class, following school rules,
using a hall pass when needing to go to another area of the building, keeping hands to self, and treating
others as they would want to be treated. Being unkind to others, calling names, making fun of others are
unacceptable and not tolerated if we know it is going on. Mr. Smith and I handle all situations that come
our way!
NEWSFLASH 1!!! Our basketball teams had a terrific season. Our girls showed such progress
over the course of the season. Their games were full of excitement. We did not reach the
tournament championship game but it wasn’t for lack of effort and energy. We are proud of their
accomplishments and sportsmanship!
NEWSFLASH 2!!! Our boys will play Kestral Heights for the tournament championship. We are
also very proud of the play of our boys. They’ve had a terrific season with many wins but more
importantly ----great sportsmanship. We wish them well in the game against Kestral.
NEWSFLASH 3!!! Don’t forget to order your yearbook. Here is the correct web site----
www.strawbridge.net. The code needed is 108404.
NEWSFLASH 4!!! On Tuesday, February 14, we invite our students to Dress for Success. This
means to dress in their very best attire! The National Junior Honor Society is also sponsoring a
diaper drive on February 14. Please send diapers so we can have lots to share with the Diaper
Bank who distributes to those in need.
NEWSFLASH 5!!! Our 8th graders are in the process of selecting courses for 9th grade. The high
school team is working with our students to ensure they register for what is needed. What an
exciting time for our 8th graders!!
IMPORTANT!!!! IMPORTANT!!!! IMPORTANT!!!!
