Congratulations to Anna Mangini from Codicote who won our August competition to win a meal for two at the Lytton Arms in Old Knebworth.

Anna took a friend to enjoy the prize and told us, “We had a lovely evening and felt like food judges or some secret tasters. My friend was in heaven. Both of us do not eat meat, but whereas I eat most fi sh she is almost vegan. I also have an allergy to chilli

and curry, so the two of us have often a lot of diffi culty in fi nding one dish to choose from a menu that is suitable to our diets. Imagine our delight, when we saw a menu full of choices also suitable for vegetarians! And not the usual ‘veggy lasagna’.

Having had our really tasty starters, my friend had a Mushroom & vegetable steamed pudding that was tasty and presented with nicely cooked fresh vegetables and my pan fried seabass with saute’ potatoes and capers and butter sauce was served with vegetables and done to perfection, delicious and tasty. Absolutely gorgeous!

We both had a dessert of chocolate brownies with toffee ice-cream and chocolate sauce and that fi nished up a really lovely and fulfi lling meal.

Service was attentive and timely and we had the chance to meet one of the chefs. The other chef we were told has been a vegetarian her whole life, and she comes up with the vegetarian dishes that so titillated our appetite. Thank you Village Life and The Lytton Arms for the opportunity to sample the really wholesome and tasty food. I’ll be there again soon!”

The Lytton Arms are now taking bookings for Christmas, Call James on 01438 812312.

KATS AUTUMN PRODUCTION whose Life is it Anyway? By Brian Clark

Never ones to resist a challenge, KATS (Knebworth Amateur Theatrical Society) Autumn production is based around a

bedridden heroine who can move nothing but her head.

Following an accident, Claire Harrison lies paralysed in hospital, where the medical staff are committed to keeping her alive. But she claims she has the right to die. So what does the law say?

Lynsey Gammage takes on the rôle of Claire, who takes her case to the High Court – in the person of Mrs Justice Millhouse (Frances Farrugia), who comes to Claire’s bedside to make her ruling. Director Mary Hearmon takes on the challenge of bringing a modern hospital to Knebworth Village Hall, ably assisted by brilliant set designer Graham Dormer.

A further challenge for KATS to rise and meet is an interrupted production run. The Hall is being used as a polling station on Thursday, so production dates are Wednesday 14, Friday 16 and Saturday 17 November. To tempt you out on a Wednesday night, all ticket prices for the Wednesday night performance only will include a free piece of cake in the interval; plus, for the Wednesday night performance only there is a special offer for pre-booked and pre-paid tickets – buy two for £10.Tickets £6.50, concessions £5.50 Box offi ce Jo Simson 01438 814166, 07952 199183 or Village News on Station Road. Stress, anxiety, or worry? 3 steps to coping...

A good 80% of the hundreds of people I see annually would have anxiety related symptoms: from bed wetters as young as

5 to older people worrying. Yet, I only see the tip of a huge iceberg.

So much day-to-day stuff upsets people: lack of confidence, being watched; presentations, work situations, redundancy and money issues; panic and phobias; coping with kids and relationships; school issues, exams and driving tests; toilet issues, medical treatment, pain; getting pregnant, weight gain; even deep trauma from years ago; and many more.

If you suffer worry or anxiety issues they can be changed. Remember that the more you repeat them the stronger they get. The stronger they get, the more ingrained they become and you may give up trying and start thinking that this is just the way you are. But it isn’t! You can change, you can get out of that spiraling loop. There is absolutely no point going through your life repeating the same negative behavior time after time. Get help from someone that knows what to do. Get help and deal with it! You will feel so different after.Calmness is what we aim for and here are a few steps to help you now.1. BREATHE. This is easy. You are continually breathing, so just take a deeper breath, hold it for a second and then let it go slowly. Anxiety involves shallow breathing, the lungs don’t get the oxygen they need, so more quick breaths are needed. Stopping for a deeper breath strengthens you, the oxygen goes deep inside, you focus on your breathing and it breaks the fear cycle. Practice breathing properly.2. THINK. If you are concerned about anything THINK before you engage your mouth. What comes out in a heated moment is something you can never take back. Many people have said or done something they regret. (If something like this has happened to you already then

something can be done. It is no use carrying the scar around to remind you forever.)3. ACT. After breathing to calm yourself down, and thinking about what you are about to say, then ACT in a responsible way. See the situation for what it is and take control of yourself. Cut the worry, cut the small talk, let go of the negative thoughts, and respond in the right way for the situation. It may just need a smile, it may be you walk away from it and let others manage, or it may be you carry on with something else. Whatever you choose will be better than what you previously did. If you would like a free consultation do ring me. 07962 811907.

business focus

Nestled in the Hertfordshire countryside on the outskirts of Stevenage, Harwood Park Crematorium and Memorial Gardens

is a place of peace and tranquillity. It is owned and managed by Austin’s, Hertfordshire’s leading independent funeral directors, and has been serving the local community for 15 years. In this relatively short period of time it has become the preferred choice for many bereaved families and now carries out over 2,200 cremations a year.

The crematorium was a labour of love for the late John Austin who was the ninth generation of his family to run the 300-year-old company. For over 30 years he campaigned for a local crematorium but having failed to convince the cash-strapped authorities of the need for such a facility he finally decided to build and run it himself.

Having fought so long and hard, John was determined to provide the community with a first class service and facilities. He had visited crematoria all over the country and was exasperated at what he perceived to be a lack of thought and consideration for the needs of the bereaved and their loved ones. He decided that at Harwood Park the needs of the mourners would be paramount. This meant not only providing a personal, caring and compassionate service but also getting the practical things right including ensuring mourners did not leave a service to be confronted by the next group of mourners; providing state of the art music technology; making sure the administrative offices were away from the chapel and placing the catafalque (on which the coffin rests) off-centre so mourners are not forced to look at it but can instead look out a strategically placed window over rolling countryside.

“Dad was passionate about getting Harwood Park right,” explains his daughter Claire who is now managing director of Austin’s. “And his efforts have been appreciated by so many people over the years. The gardens are beautiful and our dedicated gardeners make sure that they always look stunning and welcoming.”

Mourners are offered a variety of ways to commemorate their loved ones including memorial seats, dedicated trees and shrubs, a rose garden with plaques and stone memorials.

In addition to Harwood Park, Austin’s has eight funeral arranging offices throughout Hertfordshire. It has recently won a number of prestigious international and local business awards including business of the year at the Hertfordshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry awards and medium business of the year at the Hertfordshire Business Awards.

business

I t’s tough out there right now. A difficult economy and rapidly changing world mean it’s not just business as usual. To survive and thrive requires new ideas

and new strategies – a different way of thinking about how to grow your business.

In business it’s easy to become fully occupied just keeping the wheels turning. You are so busy handling customers, managing staff, chasing suppliers, juggling finances and keeping on top of all those other issues that you face day to day, that you soon find you no longer have time to think about the bigger picture.

At times like these you need an accountant to stand shoulder to shoulder with you, anticipating the problems and proactively offering their knowledge and expertise to help you find the way forward with positive, powerful leadership.

Sadly, not all accountants demonstrate these qualitiesThey disappear from one year-end to the next; they are slightly aloof, generally unhelpful and unresponsive – and if you want to chat something over with a partner, you can forget it. If your accountants fall into this category, perhaps it’s time to think about a change, to a new kind of accountants who will take the time to understand your business and are ready to meet the challenges of the new economy with you.

Accountants who provide:– proactive help and advice– support whenever you need it– effective strategies that help your business grow– immediate partner access when you want it– fixed prices, so there are no shocks when the

bill arrives– outstanding tax-saving strategies for you, your

family and your business

Helping you prosperMost accountancy firms can reduce your tax bill. Far fewer have what it takes to minimise the tax you pay at the same time as helping maximise your profits. We offer all the technical expertise you’d expect from Chartered Accountants, plus the savvy commercial sense, insight and connections of experienced business advisors.

Free Business ReviewFor a start, we’ll undertake a review of your current position. For instance, we will look for ways to reduce corporate and personal taxes, ways to enhance your cash flow, and whether you are getting a good deal from your bank. In the majority of instances, we will come up with ideas to save you tax and improve your profits.

Dealing with Hard water in the Home

The water that comes out of your tap is not totally pure. Water is a good solvent and it can absorb chemicals quite easily. When water

absorbs magnesium and calcium, especially in areas such as Hertfordshire where limestone is present, it is said to be ‘hard’. There are differing degrees of ‘hardness’ depending on where you live in the county. An average hard water home builds up 1/16th (1.5mm) of an inch of scale per year.

There is no evidence that hard water is any risk to your health, but there are a number of disadvantages of having hard water in your home. The only way to ensure you get soft water and the many benefits it brings you and your home is to install a Water Softener, which is installed by plumbing it ‘in line’ usually where the water enters the property. The Softener release either magnetic, electromagnetic or radio wave pulses into the water to remove calcium and magnesium (hardness) from the water.

what are the benefi ts of soft water? The simple answer is that soft water saves you money. There are also other benefits associated with soft water.

Appliances – Limescale deposits build up on immersion heaters, in kettles, washing machines, irons, dishwashers and inside pipes and hot water cylinders. Not only will a water softener start to remove the limescale that is in your pipes and on your heating elements, but it will also prevent any further deposits in the future. Because elements that are already ‘furred’ up have to heat the limescale before they can heat the water, a scale free system will use less energy, saving on heating bills by as much as 70%. Just 3mm of scale increases your hot water bills by over 25%.

Your appliances will also enjoy a longer life expectancy once a water softener is installed.

Shampoos – Hard water soaks up shampoos and bubble bath. Soft water also has a ‘silky’ feel to it and helps considerably those people who may suffer from eczema, psoriasis and dry skin. A bath stays clean with soft water and showerheads flow better as there is no scale blocking the outlet holes.

Detergents – With soft water in your home, you will need less soap powder in your washing machine and less detergent in your dishwasher. You also won’t have to add separate salt to your dishwasher’s water softening unit.

Cleaning – Because soft water leaves fewer residues than hard water, you’ll need less of your cleaning product and it will take you less time and effort. A study found that softened water cut the average time required for cleaning baths, sinks, taps, shower screens etc by nearly 40% as against a hard water home. Soft water also means it is easier to keep toilets clean and any crockery from a dishwasher dries both spot and stain free.

Cooking and drinking – People cooking with soft water claim that it enhances the taste and colour of food.

If you would like to fi nd out more information on how you could benefi t from a Water Softener, contact Acoline Softeners on 01462 811487. Acoline Softeners are a local company who have been selling water softeners and drinking water products for over 30 years. They have a vast wealth of knowledge and experience on all matters to do with the softening and purifying of domestic water and are one of the leading suppliers in the UK.

They will present a 3D solution designed to attract customers through the door while maximising return on investment by making the best use of the space available. If the proposed design is liked, all the drawings and technical details are available for purchase. Should the client decide to appoint Driedee to deliver the project, all design fees will be waived and the shop fitting work is guaranteed for 5 years against wear and tear.

Steve and Miles were at college together in St Albans as apprentices; after vast amount of experience on site Miles joined a tool manufacturer working his way up to Technical Manager. Steve worked for a Joinery and Shop fitting company for 10 years before deciding to setup his own

business in 2000. One of his first projects was to design and install a shop in Sweden which was completed within budget and ahead of time; this then lead to a successful 10 year contract throughout Europe. As part of this large project, Steve met the CEO of a successful shopfitting company in Belgium called Driedee Interieur (meaning “3D Interior” in Flemish). He loved how they operated

especially their ethics of training young people and joined forces to establish Driedee in the U.K.

Miles had been involved with a tooling system for wooden windows and doors to have the same weatherproofing and longevity of UPVC, but with the sustainability of natural timber without the environmental impact of uPVC. Although busy with work, he never had the opportunity to do anything with the idea until 2010 when he was made redundant. At the same time, the recession was affecting Steve’s business so he was looking for other opportunities. It was during a timely meeting in 2010, where Steve and Miles discussed the idea of combining their skills of manufacturing and shopfitting. Driedee U.K. would offer all the traditional skills of the English market with the resources and back up of a large Belgium business offering retail design, bar design, manufacturing and installation complimenting the joinery manufacturing.

Steve and Miles believe that the training they received as apprentices gave them a perfect grounding to be successful and they wanted to give something back, so they hired an apprentice who has been with them for almost a year now. Joe is being trained in all parts of the business from wood machinery, assembly, finishing and using software for design and setting out. They are passing on the skills they have learned and he is already a valuable asset to their business.

Steve told us, “We have found a demand for people to go back to the traditional look in their houses, they are often surprised at how much quieter and draft free their new windows are. We offer all styles of windows and doors which will compliment the look of your house and potentially add value, and they are not as expensive as you may think.

It’s been a steep learning curve and we have invested a lot of time and money perfecting the way we finish our products. Initially we struggled to find good quality timber, adhesives and paint which were up to the job; however following extensive research we have some fantastic suppliers and the Scandinavian paint we use means the wood can bear the harsh British weather.”

Steve and Miles meet clients to go through a checklist of what they require, advising them on timber and paint selection, glass finish and ironmongery. They are happy to provide references or take you to see examples of their work. Whether you are looking for a single window or replacing all of your windows and doors, they will provide advice and a no obligation quote. For a small fee they will

also come round annually and maintain the windows and doors, cleaning them and fixing small scratches or dents to keep them in good condition. For further information on Driedee’s doors and windows or if you are thinking of buying a retail shop and would like to understand how to maximise your investment, contact Steve on 01707 376667, 07917 166 727, [email protected] or visit www.driedee.com

Founders of the The Golf Trust, Cae Menai-Davis of The Shire London Golf Club, and Frank Harrington of Comgolf hosted an exciting day of

golf and coaching to celebrate the launch of the Trust. Oblivious to the rain and cold, enthusiastic visitors and participants included members of the Special Olympics, the Disabled Golf Association and pupils from various Hertfordshire schools.

“It has been a privilege to witness the enthusiasm and enjoyment of all the participants, but especially those with disabilities, who through playing golf, have found an activity they can participate and progress in at their own pace.” Said Cae, co-founder of the Golf Trust. “Im very excited at the potential of the charity to improve the lives of so many and look forward to being a part of its growth and success”, he said. The Golf Trust in partnership with the Shire Golf Club, encourages schools to consider using their PE time to introduce pupils to the sport, and they are welcome at the Shire Golf Club.

Barry Reed who has spent the last nine years in a wheelchair after a serious accident praised the launch of the Trust. “I thought I would never again be able to enjoy sport or find an activity I could manage independently, until I heard about the Golf Trust. Thanks to their ongoing support and the help of a coach (who has become a firm friend) I am now able to get out and enjoy life again”.

The Golf Trust is a newly registered Charity aimed at highlighting the inclusive nature of golf and bringing together all members of the community to experience the benefits of golf. The Shire London is the UKs only Seve Ballesteros design course, and seeks to work with partners who share their aims to raise the profile and benefits of golf, with a special focus on encouraging those with disabilities.

For further information, visit www.facebook.com/thegolftrust or call Mr Cae Menai-Davies on 07736 246 294.

New golf charity helps disabled A charity aimed at helping disabled children and adults learn and enjoy the sport of golf, was launched last month at a prestigious event held at the Shire London Golf Club in Barnet.

Local Teacher publishes children’s novel

At the newly built Greenacres Military Base, Professor

Windar’s amazing team of cyborgs are unveiled. Their purpose: to support the UK’s fight against global terrorism. But when his deadliest

prototype malfunctions, the inhabitants of Greenacres find themselves entangled in a fight for survival like no other. Claws clasp, feathers fry, and microchips meddle as a new breed of hero is born. Can the future of humanity and animalkind be saved by Spikez?

Earlier this year we featured an article on Richard Mayer, a local secondary school teacher who has written his debut children’s novel. In Spikez, Richard has fused animals with technology which he describes as “Animal Farm meets The Matrix”.

After nearly four years in development, Spikez has finally been brought to life. During this time, a prototype

was distributed across schools in Hertfordshire during school visits and workshops. The response was really positive and helped Richard produce the final version of the book, he has been busy doing school events every week since.

Hugh Warwick, an ecologist & author said, “I believe that the best way to get people hooked on the natural world is to tell them great stories – and this is such a story.”

Richard will be signing copies of Spikez at Waterstones, St Albans, on the 10th November and the book is available through Amazon. We have a signed copy of Spikez to give away to a Village Life reader, to a win a copy of the book, simply tell us what Animal is Spikez based on? Please email your answer, name and address to [email protected] further information, visit www.spikez.co.uk or follow @Spikez_novel on twitter
