STEPPING BACK IN TIME

This month we met up with Sean McMenemy who runs Ark Wildlife, a Hitchin based mail order business. Straight away he explains

the business name “My company is uniquely, totally dedicated to garden wildlife in all its forms.” He continues to tell us, “Ark Wildlife has become a nationally recognised Bird Care brand and although we are best known for our ARK® Bird Care range, we actually have over 750 product lines for all forms of wildlife found in domestic gardens.”

This all sounds impressive for a business that’s been trading less than 10 years but Sean continued “From the outset, we sought to innovate and create new markets.” He explains, “We do a lot of product development and research, working closely with animal nutritionists, veterinary professionals, etc.” For example, he says “Because we have the expertise, we manufacture specialist feeds for Councils, English Heritage and The National Trust nationally due to the huge areas of countryside they manage and the

wild animals living on them.”

In the interview we asked Sean about his background and how he came to run a wildlife business but with an unexpected urgency he brought us back to the present, “I was fortunate enough to grow up in the countryside

with the freedom to roam and explore.” he said. “I learnt to love all wildlife from a young age, and while I don’t expect everyone to love spiders and beetles,” including his wife Karen, he tells us, “I’d like everyone to take a moment to remember that all life is inter-dependent and consider how even the smallest creature really is important!”

“In recent years,” says Sean, “this dependency has been dramatically highlighted by the shocking decline in our bee populations. Creatures we simply accept as being here, buzzing around garden flowers on sunny days, are now in fearful decline.” Sean tells us “2 of our 24 native bumblebee species have already been declared extinct and research estimates up to 50% of our honey bees have been lost to Colony Collapse Disorder.” Sean then reminds us why this is a problem that affects us all, “Bees are what’s known as a ‘key stone’ species, without them mankind could not exist!” To dramatically make his point Sean says, “The next time you visit the supermarket, imagine the fruit and vegetable sections empty. Extend this to all the drinks, canned goods and ready meals. In fact,” he says, “only about 30% of the food we see in shops would still be available if the bees were gone!”

Despite all the problems facing wildlife in the modern world Sean remains highly optimistic. He points to the many positive steps being taken by Government, farmers and even property developers to improve the environment and becomes even more excited with the possibilities to improve things even further.

Sean says “We have over 19 million gardens across

the UK, a total land mass larger than all the official nature reserves combined! When people say to me ‘but I’ve only got a small garden I can’t make a difference’, I say ‘Oh yes you can!’”. He continues, “We encourage our customers to think in terms of the area they live in, rather than the gardens they own. Thinking beyond the garden boundary opens up more opportunities for the home owner and for local wildlife.” Sean explains, “We all know that birds fly and often visit domestic gardens but much more of our wildlife uses the same route. By simply allowing a few wildflowers (wind blown seeds) to grow, flower and set seed, we’ll be providing food and habitats for flying beneficial insects (bumblebees included), while additionally providing free food for garden birds.”

Sean’s point becomes clear as he describes “Picture the UK’s gardens as a giant patchwork quilt, the fewer holes it has, the warmer and more inviting it becomes. This is why every garden that sets aside a small area for wildlife, no matter how small, adds to the richness of the whole.”

As we say our goodbyes to Sean, we leave with a new attitude, big bag of bird food, bird feeder and a bumblebee nester but as for the spiders well, I think we’ll leave those to Sean!

BUSINESS FOCUS

The White Horse is situated in the heart of the beautiful Hertfordshire countryside. The grade II listed building was converted from

three 16th century cottages and has its own priest hole hidden away behind the bar.

Something special has happened to the White Horse recently, it has been totally transformed with a fresh and exciting new interior and the outside area hasn’t been forgotten with a large new decked area and a space for barbeques

The large decked area complete with garden furniture also doubles up as a stage for bands! Children haven’t been forgotten as the new enclosed children’s area ensures your little ones can play safely and I am sure they will enjoy the coupe car, the little slide and trampoline, leaving you to have a relaxing drink in peace. With a large patio heater to keep you warm late into the evening this new area is very appealing and makes a welcome addition to the

outside space. There is wheelchair access on to the decking area which is great to see.

As part of the revamp of the pub, a new menu is being launched offering modern British food with a Mediterranean twist. This will be supplemented with a specials board which as always will have a selection of fresh fish dishes. Everything is prepared on the premises as far as possible from fresh ingredients which are sourced locally. All meats are British with steaks from Scotland.

Why not have your event at the White Horse, whether it is a wedding party, christening, funeral or any type of event with any type of food. You can have speciality paellas, curries, pie and mash, tapas or anything you fancy. The White horse offers outside catering for parties including outside bars.

Another part of the refurbishment was the cellar which has been modernised. You will now find three cask ales, Peroni and Fosters lagers on draft and Strongbow cider. There is a good wine list to choose from with New

World and European wines. Wines are available as mini bottles so that every glass is fresh.

You can now enjoy afternoon tea on Saturdays and Sundays with homemade cakes and scones.

Two events to put in your diary are a 1930’s night on 5th June. This is a fundraiser for the Sue Ryder Home and will feature the Twisted Vaudeville Review band and a Southern American themed buffet, come along in 1930’s American style.

On Sunday 18thJuly there is a family fun day at the White Horse with proceeds going to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity.

There will be live music, a bbq, a bouncy castle, face painting and lots of other activities for all the family including a raffle and tombola with great prizes. This event will run from 12pm to 8pm.

So pop along to The White Horse and see for yourself, Janet and family look forward to seeing you. Throughout June, you can get a 10% discount on your food bill by bringing along this copy of Village Life.

With summer on its way, if you are looking for the perfect pub

to enjoy a meal and some beers in the sun, then look no further than the Windmill. Set in the Hamlet of Charlton, The Windmill is a traditional country pub with a large patio and garden situated next to the river Hiz. There is a large car park which is handy as there is plenty of seating outside. This month, we met up with the new landlord – Nick Weldon. Nick took over the pub a couple of months ago and has given the pub a refurb. Nick said, “The pub is a great destination for walks; it is only a 15 min walk from

Hitchin along the river Hiz. In fact there are around 18 different walks possible and we are family and dog friendly. There is a farm next door with chickens, ducks, turkeys and pigs to see – perfect for keeping the kids entertained. You will also see ducks in the river just behind the pub”The Windmill offers traditional fresh home cooked food, fresh every day and locally sourced. The chips are hand cut, the ham is hand carved, the cod is fresh and battered by the chef – they even make their own home cooked curries. You will find a good selection of wines and real ales including Wells

Eagle IPA, Courage Directors and a Guest Cask Ale.In terms of entertainment they have Sky Sports and will be showing all the football and World cup. Various bands are lined up to play during the summer; however the real beauty of this pub is the large outside space. When you visit during June, mention Village Life Magazine to get a free glass of wine with your meal.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Hertfordshire is the home to several big business head offices — Tesco, Dixons Group, Ocado, T-mobile to name just a few.

It is unsurprising then that it has become a hot bed of talent. The most recent illustration of this is the launch of a new Digital Agency Zoocha Ltd. Zoocha was founded by 4 Tesco Alumni — their digital pedigree having developed in the pioneering years of Tesco.com and Tesco Direct.

“We have a real edge over other Digital Agencies — especially the Soho crowd” says Will Huggins, Zoocha’s Managing Director. “We understand the client perspective in a way that no agency can. Our background designing, building and running commercial web sites gives us a unique approach to our clients, ensuring we add maximum value at all times.”

The rest of the Zoocha team is made up of Hayley Smyth, Creative Director, formerly Tesco.com and Bounty UK head of design. Her previous successes include Tesco Direct, Tesco Wine Club and more recently, building online advertising campaigns for brand like Huggies and Pampers during her time at Bounty UK. As Technical Director, David Pratt joins from a similar career background, having been a senior developer at Tesco and Head of Web Development at Bounty. Mike Smith completes the quartet as Strategy Directory. His career got started in Tesco.com as a web developer, though since then Mike has developed a broad perspective on customer experience with Oracle.

“Though we are a national business” explains Mike Smith, “we will certainly focus on the local Hertfordshire economy with its range of small, medium and global businesses. We are ambitious and optimistic about the prospects for Zoocha and we have already received great feedback from clients”.

This Hertfordshire focus has already started to

gather momentum, with three local businesses already ‘on the books’.

“It has been an amazing start for us” explains Will who’s previous experience with Hemel Hempstead based DSG International, has helped them become one of Zoocha’s first ‘global’ clients.

“We offer the highest quality in everything we do, which makes us an attractive option for all businesses large and small. The diversity of the commercial landscape in Hertfordshire means we have an exciting opportunity round every corner”

“It is not without challenges though. We find that smaller businesses are still uncertain of investing behind the internet. It is our job to first build trust with prospective clients, helping them to set realistic targets for their website and allocating the appropriate level of investment. The internet should be the key to greater profit, not just another cost to manage.”

The team at Zoocha don’t seem to be concerned about setting up business in the wake of the worst global economic crisis in living memory.

“The current economic climate has certainly focussed our minds on keeping costs low” explains Mike. “That said, it is the perfect time for companies to use the internet as a mechanism for generating new business and finding new customers. We offer tailored solutions to fit each budget in order to help them realise these opportunities.”

Well, now the threat of frost has passed and the garden is

hopefully bursting with colour and life, its time to enjoy the fruits of your labours. Your garden should always be a place to enjoy and not endure. Whether you want to re-enact some great sporting event with the children, take time for quiet reflection or fire up the barbeque with friends, the versatility of your garden is there for you. After all, it is the room outside.

I’m afraid I have to remind you, though, that there are still a few jobs that if done, will keep your garden looking good, longer and keep everything under control.

Deadheading the first display of flowers when their time has passed and before they have gone to seed will encourage them to try a bit harder and hopefully flower again. Don’t just nip out the flowers, go back to the base of their stalks where they join the main plant, you don’t really want a bunch of dead stalks staring at you, do you?

If you have plants in pots or hanging baskets, don’t forget to keep them watered, especially if we have a dry spell, your earlier efforts to plant up your tubs and baskets will all be in vain if they dry out and die prematurely through lack of water. Those of you who have got your grow bag or two of tomato plants should keep them nice and moist, if the weather is warm they will be making good progress during the month, provided you don’t let them get too dry.

Those old enemies of us gardeners, weeds, will be attempting to make life harder for you from now on, they seem to be able to germinate and establish themselves overnight, so you need to remain on top of them, once you have removed them as much as possible from your borders there could possibly be the odd gap. I think it’s a good idea to consider getting back to the garden centre and invest in a few additional plants. Weeds at this time just love to infiltrate your soil and if it’s bare, it makes it so much easier for

them, so the fewer the gaps, the fewer the weeds.

Lawns will be growing away well by now and if the weather goes through a dry spell, consider raising the blades a bit on the lawn mower, your lawn will stay a lot greener, longer. You can be sure though, that wet or dry, as with your borders, weeds will be trying to make home in your lawn. Regular mowing will annoy them and put the less determined ones off but occasionally it’s a case of getting down on your hands and knees and physically digging out those dandelions and other awkward so and so’s. I suggested earlier in the year, that you could sharpen up the edges of your lawn; it may be time now depending on the amount of use that it has had to give those edges another go. It makes them easier to mow for a start and prevents the lawn from merging into the flower beds. As before use a half moon lawn edger or even a small spade, the impact is immediate.

Its now time, if you haven’t already done so, to tidy up the foliage from those daffodils, bluebells and snowdrops that got our gardens under way over the last few months. By now they will have recharged their energy and be ready to take a back seat till next spring.

Essentially though, as I started off by saying, your garden is whatever you want it to be, but as long as you enjoy looking at it, being in it or just having a doze out there, its doing its job.

Anyway, I think that’s enough to be getting on with, don’t you?

When many people think about Majorca, they think of Magaluf and its appeal to a young lively crowd with its buzzing nightlife and

high rise hotels, however you should not overlook this island as its various resorts offer so much more. You will fi nd beautiful scenery, lots of historic buildings, fantastic food and some of the Meds best beaches.

The island of Majorca off the east coast of Spain is the largest in the Balearic Islands, which collectively form one of the most popular holiday destinations in the world, and certainly in the Mediterranean. Majorca became a big tourist destination back in the 60’s. The capital, Palma, still retains its historical charm with a magnifi cent Gothic cathedral in its bustling centre.

If you visit Majorca for the sun and fun, it is worth taking a break from the beach resorts and heading off for a tour of the island by car, or even bicycle, to discover fi shing villages, historic monasteries, monuments, museums and spectacular landscapes. The undiscovered interior is largely the preserve of a

thriving agricultural community, dotted with windmills, olive and almond trees.

One of my favourite resorts is Cala d’Or which means “golden cove”, a beautiful quiet family friendly resort with a few small but perfectly formed sandy beaches. Cala d’Or is a desirable spot to have a holiday home or for a relaxing seaside holiday. The original village and harbour was situated in one of the small rocky coves with sandy beaches, called ‘calas’, which are found all along the east coast.

The resort has now spread out to include several of these coves, with many hotels, apartments and villas to suit all tastes and budgets. It is a very chic resort, recommended for families because most establishments cater extremely well for children and with our 10 month old son at the time we found this resort fantastic for him. There are numerous adjacent smaller resorts and quaint villages clustered around the calas all along the south-east coastline, connected by a good bus service or the small tourist

train. Well worth a visit are Cala Egos, Puerto Petro, Cala Mondrago, Cala Figuera, Cala Santanyi and Cala Llombarts.

The Cala d’Or marina is the heart of the east coast resort area, with many restaurants and bars I would defi nitely recommend stopping to have a drink and admire the amazing yachts in the marina. If shopping is your passion you won’t be disappointed as the main shopping street, Avinguda Tagomago is fi lled with chic boutiques, leather shops and galleries. Designer clothes and shoes, in particular, are available at reasonable prices. Souvenir shopping is fun with the wide variety of local crafts, traditional pottery and glass, and olive wood carvings available at several stores, and at the Sunday morning fl ea market in Felanitx.

If you want to leave the resort I would suggest a visit to Palma the capital as you will fi nd a city steeped in history, amazing buildings, great shopping and hundreds of restaurants and bars to choose from. Well worth a visit is the gothic cathedral, then after your visit you can take a horse drawn carriage around the local area where the guide will fi ll you in on all the

history surrounding the cathedral and local area. With fl ights from Luton and Stansted taking just

over 2 hours, Majorca is an ideal destination for a family holiday. Alternatively it is also near enough for a short weekend break in the sun. The transfer time to Cala d’Or was just under an hour, we hired a car to make it easy to get around and found it a very easy drive. There are regular buses to and from all the major resorts, with many of the resorts running tourist trains to take you to the local attractions and other beaches. The main season runs from May to October and the temperatures can reach into the high 30’s in the height of the summer. We travelled in June and found the weather to be just the right temperature in the mid twenty’s.

Majorca has many resorts from the young and lively to the quieter more sedate so why not have a break in the sun?

I wonder if you have trouble sleeping? If the answer is ‘yes’ it could relate to your comfort, or how much food, caffeine or soft drinks you

had before bed. Maybe you have been inactive all day and need to release some adrenalin. Maybe you have too much on your mind, such as emotional issues about work, finances, health or family worries. Then again, it may be that you are scared to sleep for some reason, or are in pain.

Getting a good nights sleep is paramount in allowing your brain to process your thoughts properly, and for your body to heal. It makes such a difference to your alertness and attitude the next day.

Here are some tips• Do you need a new pillow?• What about your mattress?• Have a nice warm soaking bath• Put some lavender oil on your pillow• Cut out coffee after 2pm• Try drinking valerian before bed• Have fresh air in the room• Talk out your thoughts before bed• Do some light exercise first, like up and down the

stairs a few times• Take the telly out of your bedroom, it keeps your

mind active

Some things you can do lying in bedChoose one of these, try it for a while, if it doesn’t work try another.• Concentrate on breathing deeply and calmly, get it

consistent for at least 20 breaths• With your eyes closed, count backwards from 300

and think of a pleasant place you have been, as if you were there at the time.

• Lots of silly thoughts in your mind? Imagine a box, put them in it, then shut the lid.

What else can help?If lack of sleep is persistent please see your doctor and have a check up. You can, of course, take sleeping tablets, but, what about dealing with this without drugs?

My speciality is relaxation. Relaxation is the key to good health. That is why I teach proper relaxation and people delightedly report back that they sleep so well as soon as they use these techniques. It only takes an hour to learn. Just one hour!

This month, as well as assisting numerous people to sleep, the following have been helped dramatically, just with these same, simple techniques. Travel phobia, deep seated bulimia, IBS, weight management, stopping smoking, hair pulling, confidence, acute migraines, procrastination, stress, focus for study and panic attacks. As well as this, relaxation has resulted in golf improvement, exceptional change in marathon performance, and a winner in a shooting competition.

Are you putting up with lack of sleep, irritability, or poor health? You deserve to be as well rested and as bright as everybody else! It is your choice. I am here to teach, support and help you. Let’s get it sorted!
