J.L.VERGNONLe Mesnil-sur-Oger – Grand Cru

Cote des Blancs - 5 hectares

Alain Vergnon is the owner of this prestigious property who in 2002 installed oenologue Christophe Constant to oversee a complete revival of this famous property. Christophe worked for a number of years at Pol Roger and has always been interested in working on the growers side of the fence. Christophe comes from a family that owns no vineyards, so he has approached his passion from the consulting side of the business. He is good friends with Pascal Agrapart and Anselme Selosse and is often seen tasting and discussing wines at the new Selosse hotel / restaurant in Avize, 'Hotel Restaurant Les Avizes'.

Vineyards are spread across Chardonnay in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger and Avize. Christophe likes to harvest his grapes quite late to obtain optimum terroir flavour. This also allows him to avoid chaptalization and to avoid the malolactic fermentation – hence capturing the maximum flavour with perfect acid balance.

General concensus now puts the prestigious property in the top growers in the village. With demand increasing our allocations are tiny, so it would be wise to order early. Vineyards are expensive so buying more hectares is prohibitive. The other approach is to become a NM (Negociant Manipulant) and buy grapes, but from whom? Many growers (who could be family and friends) have traditionally sold some of their grapes to the big houses. As these contracts expire, we see them selling their grapes to local growers – like Vergnon. Over the next year Christophe will be doubling his overall vineyard capacity to 10 hectares as an NM – so in a few years time we will be able to obtain larger allocations across the superb range.

J.L.Vergnon Cuvee Conversation Grand Cru

100% Grand Cru Chardonnay from Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger and Avize. Blend of 2009 and older reserve wines – dosage 5g/litre. Classic vinification in tank. Fine persistent mousse, hints of quince and citrus on the nose. Palate is fresh and chalky, hints of almond, pineapple and brioche with great length. A really great introduction to the pure style of Vergnon – purity, finesse, perfect balance and great intensity. Maybe the best version of this ever – superb value for a Grand Cru from this village.

(Landed $62.10)

J.L.Vergnon Cuvee Expression 2006 Grand Cru Extra Brut This is a new cuveé from Christophe and replaces the 'Resonance' which has sold out and always sells out quickly. Old vines here from a different blend of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger and Oger. With 2006 we see citrus and chalk with a racy saline backbone. Precise and pure, long and palate staining – this is what great 'blanc de blancs' Champagne is all about! Dosage 3g/litre and no malo-lactic. Disgorged by hand.

(Landed $82.80)

Demand from restaurants is on the rise and we now see Vergnon Champagnes on many of the best restaurants in Paris, L'Arpege, Pierre Gagnaire, L'Astrance, Willi's Wine Bar and twenty others!

TYSON STELZER: ‘Daring’ is the only word to describe Christophe Constant, the talented chef de cave of the little estate of J.L. Vergnon in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. In a village renowned for Chardonnay of greater longevity than any other in Champagne, no other grower producer dares avoid malolactic fermentation. Further, dosages are very low, never more than seven grams per litre. His top cuvée, appropriately named ‘Confidence,’ is vinified entirely in oak, a whopping fifty percent of which is brand new. With such an ambitious recipe, the proof of his skill is a well-crafted range of long-lived wines that capture the vibrant, clean expression of the finest grand crus of the Côte des Blancs.

Foreword by Ross Duke

Firstly, sorry that we have not sent out another catalogue to you all much sooner. We have had some shipping delays as well as experiencing problems in Champagne with disgorging and preparation of orders. Add to this the terrible weather in France through March, April and June, which resulted in very cold conditions and enormous rain. This weather had not been experienced since 1966 and in some cases 1910! Consequently the vines are about a month behind normal and there is continuing worry about the ripening pattern at present.

If that was not bad enough we, in Australia, have seen a significant drop in the value of the Australian dollar, which has increased arrival prices beyond 15%. However, we have received assistance from many growers to provide us pre-payment discounts which we have passed on to you our valued customers.

This offer concentrates on new vintages of your favourite Rhone Valley producers, as well as additional stocks of the very popular wines in our first catalogue featuring the Rhone. Victor has been very busy in Champagne this year. We feature a range of vintage wines and new Cuveés from your favourite Champagne de Vigneron. This culminates an exciting range of Champagne’s for you to consider. The overall range is just so varied that we are sure you will enjoy any selection. Do not miss the J.L.Vergnon Champagnes on the back page – sensational wines.

Finally we have included some little gems from that lovely village of Chablis. Here we have Collet with two Premiers Cru and Millet running from Petit Chablis (top up) to Village then Premier Cru. All of these wines are just wonderful examples of these unique Chardonnay wines that can only be made in Chablis within the ancient soil of Kimmerigian Clay.

Apologies again for the slight delay but we will surely make up for it with the selection we propose with this varied catalogue.

Cheers from me and Bev, Sarah, Eve, Vic and David.

RHONE VALLEY

DOMAINE BOSQUET DES PAPES,

CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPEThis 30 hectare estate is one of the few Vignerons left in Chateauneuf that follow long and established, traditional wine making methods. None of this new oak, high alcohol red wines that Robert Parker influenced a decade ago – Yuk! Here the Boiron family pick earlier to ensure lower levels of alcohol and fermented in the traditional manner. They then age and mature their wines in 300 litre casks for 12 to 18 months. No high toast either so the outcome is very natural and fresh thus capable of maturing between six and ten years.

The Bosquet des Papes estate has remained in the Boiron family since 1860 and is located on the Chateauneuf-du-Pape terroir. From father to son five generations of the family have lovingly consolidated the Bosquet des Papes vines and their wines.

Chateauneuf du Pape 2011 Cuvee Traditionelle(75% Grenache Noir, 11 Mourvedre (Mataro),

11% Syrah & a 3% mix of Vaccarese, Counoise and Cinsault.)

‘Nice deep ruby colour and soft fruity nose. The palate is so soft, round with mild tannins and great length. The infusion of red berry fruits is obvious but no hot taste at all just lovely length and complexity.’

$52.00/bt pre-arrival Code: 3797

(Landed $59.80)Wine Advocate 90-92 PointsThe 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Tradition is a blend of 75% Grenache and the rest mostly Syrah and Mourvedre with small amounts of Counoise, Vaccarese and Cinsault, all aged in foudres. It possesses a wonderful earthy/garrigue character in addition to abundant kirsch, lavender and black raspberry fruit. This full-bodied 011 should drink beautifully for a decade.

Chateauneuf du Pape 2012 Blanc (45% Clairette, 35% Grenache Blanc & 20% Bouboulenc)

‘I normally find white Chateauneuf du Pape to be boring and one dimensional so you can imagine my surprise to find one, at last, that is worthy of buying and presenting in Australia? A light green tinge in the colour is a promising start followed by a light smoky nose. The palate is lovely and fresh with a light grapefruit edge and balancing acidity. What a delicious and highly surprising white wine!’

Chateauneuf du Pape 2011 ‘Chante le Merle ‘Vieilles Vignes’(80% Grenache Noir, 10% Syrah & 10% Mourvedre (Mataro)

‘Just bottled which is surprising given it’s open flavour. Deep ruby colour with immediate fruit impact. Yes, a bold attack with tannin and fruit which is so, so long. What a wine!!!’

$76.00/bt pre-arrival Code: 3799

(Landed $87.40)Wine Advocate 92-94 PointsComposed of 85% Grenache and the rest equal parts Syrah and Mourvedre, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes emanates from four separate old vine parcels located in Pignan, Mont Redon, Les Grands Galiguieres and La Gardine. A candidate for the wine of the vintage, the 2011 exhibits a shockingly rich dense purple color as well as sensational notes of blackberries, licorice, cassis, nori (the seafood wrapper used in sushi restaurants), pepper and roasted meats. It is a full-throttle, massive Chateauneuf du Pape with silky tannins, decent acidity and a long finish. This is a killer wine! It should age effortlessly for 10-15 years.

DOMAINE PORTE ROUGE, CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPEPorte Rouge is a small estate whose 2.5 hectares of vines flourish under the bright sun with their roots anchored in beautiful river stones. Syrah and Grenache grapes grow on 6 different lots with each variety offering its specific characteristics. Porte Rouge produces a small number of bottles between 8,000 and 10,000 bottles , depending on the harvest. The wine cellar is located in the village. This ancient structure was directly carved into the rock and provides ideal ageing conditions.

Porte Rouge 2010 Chateauneuf Du Pape

‘This is a very traditional Chateauneuf du Pape using only 2 of the 13 permitted grape varieties for this wine – 90% Grenache Noir and 10% Syrah (Shiraz) with no white grapes entering the blend as they tend to oxidise easily. The wine is aged in old oak barrels for one year then settled and bottled. There is none of the high alcohol or strong use of new oak but a beautiful purity with no hot overtones. Excellent quality from nose to palate!’

DOMAINE BOISSON, CAIRANNEThe actual wine cellar at Domaine Boisson was built in 1957 although the estate has been in the family since the mid nineteenth century. In those days they grew a variety of crops, cereals, fruit and olive trees, some vines and a vegetable garden. It was only after the great freeze of 1956, which killed wholes groves of olive trees, that the cultivation of vines was developed. Soon after, the introduction of tractors enabled the family to enlarge the estate. Finally in 1986 the first Domaine Boisson wine was bottled on the estate. Today the Domaine Boisson is a 34 hectare estate, on the communes of Lagarde Pareol 2 ha and Cairanne 32 ha. For the last ten years the owners, Regis Boisson and his son Bruno, have focused on modernising their cultivation methods in order to produce premium quality grapes. We think they have succeeded extremely well and think their

wines to be outstanding.

Cotes du Rhone Villages 2012 ‘Cairanne’ Rouge

‘70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre. Nice deep colour and a nose full of jasmine and iris – just so floral! This wine did not see any oak at all but is elegant and spicy with mild acidity and high concentration of fruit.’

DOMAINE NOTRE DAME DES PALLIERES, GIGONDAS

Located in the southern Rhone valley, close to Avignon, the Ventoux, and more important; against the slopes of the ‘Dentelles de Montmirail’ a mountain range with origins from 200 million years ago. When next in France this is a must visit location indeed!

Notre-Dame de Pallieres goes back to a distant time, situated in the border path connecting two abbeys- St Andre of the Ramieres and Prebayon. This road appears on the papers in 963 when the abbey of Montmajour of Arles sells St Andre, to the nuns of Preybayon. In more recent times, in 1615 records show that the chapel was the tenement of our lady of the Pallieres.

This very old family estate of 15 hectares is located in the village of Gigondas. They also have 16 hectares in nearby Sablet, 13 hectares in Rasteau, 3 hectares in Seguret and 13 hectares in Lirac.

Well what a tasting at Pallieres. It was very hard to choose as all wines were of such a high standard. The three that we offer you on this occasion are just stunning. I could not imagine anyone not liking all three of them!!

Gigondas 2010 ‘Bois des Mourres’ Rouge‘ Deep ruby colour with great clarity. A very stylish, elegant and silky textured palate full of red berry fruits. Stylish with enormous length with 5-10% of ageing in old oak barrels to round out the finish. Just so stylish and round.’

DOMAINE MONTMARTEL, TULETTE

COTES DU RHONE

For five generations the Marres family have cultivated their 90 hectare vineyard in the tiny villages of Visan, Valreas, Tulette and St Maurice in Frances southern Cotes du Rhone region. The Montmartel quality demands low yields at 35 hectolitres per hectare and carefully selected parcels of land plus picking of the grapes at full maturity. The vineyards are also located high up in the hills where the best terroir lies to raise top quality Syrah(40%), Grenache (50%) and 10% Carignan grapes plus a tiny amount of Viognier and Marsanne. These varieties produce fruity, easy-to-drink wines that are complex and full bodied. They

are certified as organic with no chemical pesticides and insecticides used in the vines just organic fertilisers. The micro-biologic organisms in their soils are favoured to increase the terroir aspect in their wines. Their red wines are complex, with terroir expression, good concentration, round with silky tannins and fruit flavours of cherry, liquorice, blackcurrant with great finesse and a long finish. The white is also quite complex with a long finish with flavours of acacia, white flowers, peach, pear and great balance.

Cotes du Rhone Blanc 2012‘An equal blend of Viognier, Grenache Blanc and Clairette. A very fresh and vibrant white that is clean and lightly spiced with lovely balancing acidity and ever so well balanced. Goodness the whites have improved enormously down in the Rhone. None of the low acid, flabby wines of yesterday just pure and precise. Bravo!’

Cotes du Rhone Rouge 2010 Villages ‘Visan’ ‘Black/red colour of great intensity (clay soil). One would expect strong, dry tannins but surprise, quite the opposite as this is silky and round. Plenty of ripe plum and blackcurrant fruit with soft round fruit tannin and ever so long in overall flavour. Again, no hot taste, high alcohol or weedy fruit. A blend of 50% Grenache and 50% Syrah (Shiraz).’

DOMAINE PRADELLE , CROZES HERMITAGE

Family owned estate with it’s roots dating back to 1854. The vineyards are located on both the left and right bank in the northern Rhone in the villages of Chanos-Curson, Mercurol et Beaumont-Monteux. In total the winery has 35 hectares of which 30 hectares in the Cru of Crozes-Hermitage and 5 hectares in Saint Joseph. The red wines are 100% Syrah (Shiraz). Their white Croze is 95% Marsanne and 5% Roussane.

The soil types are very complex with a high proportion of minerals from the granitic Massif Central, but also the round pebbles from the ice age morenes, as well as an alluvial soil from the Rhone river. Some of their vineyards are on terraces as well. All wines are vinified in concrete tanks, followed by oak barrel maturation of the reds BUT no new oak!!

Crozes Hermitage 2011 Rouge‘Dark Ruby in colour with a delightfully spicy red-fruit nose. The spiciness follows onto the palate where tannins are found to be soft with a beautiful long and clean finish. The alcohol is low at 13% so no hot taste at all. Beautiful to drink right now but no problems with ageing over the next 10 years. A classic Shiraz!’

DOMAINE CHRISTOPHE SEMASKA, CôTE RôTIE*NEW GROWER*

Christophe Semaska always had a passion for wine-making although he was not born into a family of wine lovers. His Father was an acrobat for many years and his Mother is from St Cyr. Christophe was busily crunching numbers as an accountant for a couple of years until he decided to follow his dream by becoming a dedicated young wine maker. Christophe’s sloping vineyard consists of 4.5 hectares which is all part of the Côte Brune. The soil, a combination of mica-schiste and muddy areas, with rich glacial boulders to highlight this magnificent landscape. Christophe has his own vines but also leases additional land at Chateau de Montlys (only Chateau of Côte Rôtie) over the last 36 years.

Chateau de Montlys 2011 Cote RotieThis is really good stuff! Power, complexity and extremely long mouth feel. Christophe Semaska has his own vineyards but also leases additional vines at Chateau de Montlys (only Chateau of Cote Rotie) over the last 36 years. This outstanding wine is 100% Syrah (Shiraz) from the Cote Brune and 70% of the grapes are de-stemmed and the resulting wine is aged for 18 months in oak barrels of which 50% are new oak. Consequently their Cote Rotie is very powerful, concentrated and deep and dark in colour. The palate is equally powerful with spices, tannins, pepper, liquorice as well as being succulent and lingering. They scream out for patient bottle ageing up to 20 years+. Chateau de Montlys stands as one of the most outstanding Cote Rotie I have encountered!

DOMAINE COLLET, CHABLIS

A lovely visit this year at Domaine Jean Collet where I tasted with Romain Collet. And what a tasting it was, as all wines expressed traditional Chablis structure with highly crisp acidity, flintiness and expressive minerality.

The parcels of vineyards that Domaine Collet posses are located on the best slopes of the right and left banks of the River Serein. This gives the wines their generosity and charm. The meticulous care with which the harvest is carried out, the culture of the vine and the vinification ensures that the classifications of their vines is regular and of high quality.

We are delighted to offer you Collet's 2010 Montee de Tonnere made from 33 year old vines which was fermented and matured in Burgundian oak pieces (228 litres) with the oak emanating from the Allier region and given medium toasting. The yield was 55 hectolitres/Hectare with a density in the vineyard of 5,700 vine stocks per hectare.

On the other hand the Vaillons ‘Secher’ is made from 20 year old vines with a yield of 55 hectolitres/hectare but a vine density of 6,000 vines per hectare. The finished wine was an assembly of 30% raised in oak barrels and 70% stainless steel tanks for 17 months and bottled without filtering. This is to preserve a more natural flavour with maximum mineral expression. Me thinks it worked beautifully.

Montee de Tonnerre 2010 1er Cru

‘Engaging green edged colour is a great start. The nose is minerally and earthy. This follows faithfully onto the palate and stamps itself as an authentic and fabulous Chablis. The flavour is minerally and flinty with grapefruit and lemon notes and the palate is very, very long. You will all love this outstanding Premier Cru.’

Vaillons 2010 ‘Secher’ 1er Cru

‘What a cracker! This lovely wine oozes Chablis from start to finish. The ‘Secher’ is a specific site in the fabulous Premier Cru vineyard of ‘Vaillons’. It drinks beautifully right now but do not fear if you wish to age it for 5 years or more. I happen to love the crisp acidity and minerality of Chablis as a young wine. To each her/his own?? DOMAINE MILLET, CHABLIS

We had a lovely visit with Baudouin Millet in his impeccable Domaine high up in the hills of Chablis, in the direction of Tonnere. I was tempted to say to Baudouin that if he gave up wine-making he could easily become a jockey, as he is just so small in stature! Naturally, I kept my mouth shut and used it just to taste his beautiful and authentic Chablis.

The quality of Millets wines are just perfect and ever so reasonable in price given the high quality. We were lucky to snap up some more 2011 Chablis as well as purchasing their Vaucoupin Premier Cru. We expect that all of our stock will be snapped up quickly if previous offers are repeated.

We are pleased to advise that we have secured a small,

additional supply of this very popular Chablis!

Our original notes were…

Petit Chablis 2011‘Nice green tinge with a little yellow. The nose here is a bit muted at present but that will fill out. A very crisp attack with some honey and grapefruit to the middle palate. Excellent length and the minerality is obvious. Millet is considered the finest producer of Petit Chablis even by their competitors, as Jean-Francoise Bordet declared. I have tasted many in the past that rivalled rocket fuel. Not this boy, as the balance and style is superb. Now what about the price for real Chablis?’

$21.50/bt pre-arrival Code: 9282 (Landed $24.70)

Chablis 2011 Villages‘That important green tinge to the colour is always important as it reflects the presence of acidity. That earthy, stony and minerally nose is ever present, as is the crisp dry and stony finish. This is excellent from start to finish. THIS IS THE REAL DEAL. No need to worry if you cellar it for 5-8 years, but I prefer my Chablis relatively young as I love that stony/minerally finish. Oops a gold medal winner at the Macon wine fair to boot!’

$26.80/bt pre-arrival Code: 9283

(Landed $30.85)

Chablis 2011 ‘Vaucoupin’ 1er Cru‘Green/gold colour with a prominent earthy/mineral nose which follows faithfully onto the palate. There is also a richness of honey and grapefruit - very crisp acidity and lovely balance. Top quality Chablis!’

CHAMPAGNE GASTON CHIQUETDizy – 1er Cru

Marne Valley - 22 hectaresMichael Edwards in the ‘Finest

Wines of Champagne’ says

‘These Champagnes pre-eminently

give the drinker a real sense of

place, of the special plots of earth

from which they come … the

antithesis of a big house’s blend of

many parts.’

The original Nicolas Chiquet planted his first vines in 1746. Since then eight generations have carried on the family tradition. Gaston Chiquet launched his own brand in 1935. They now own 22 hectares covering Dizy, Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay and Hautvillers. The proportions cultivated are Chardonnay 40%, Pinot Meunier 40% and Pinot Noir 20%. Dizy has a 1er Cru classification with a rating of 95% and has much in common with its neighbouring village Aÿ. The Chiquets are cousins of the Jacquesson Chiquets just around the corner. The wines show good weight and intensity, and they are proud to use their high quality Pinot Meunier. Having 1er Cru vineyards helps, since it basically means you have access to Pinot Meunier which cannot be grown in Grand Cru designated vineyards! Pinot Meunier is a much maligned variety. Nicolas is also a member of the ‘Club Tresors’ and produces a ‘Special Club’

cuvée which is currently the 2005 Vintage – in this offer. The ‘Club Tresors’ draws inspiration on three guiding principles – authenticity, rigor and originality. The style here is for precise Champagnes that are accurate of their terroir and grape variety. The wine making does not mask or hide what nature provides. The entire range is outstanding – even the humble Brut Tradition is an excellent wine – we have a number of restaurants pouring this by the glass when we have any stocks.

Nicolas is fastidious about preserving the freshness and acidity in Champagne throughout the vinification, bottling and storage process. He has conducted many years of testing bottle closures – cork and Diam – and come to the conclusion that only dense Diam offers him the reliability, neutrality and preservation which are imperative for the Gaston Chiquet label.

70% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir with a dosage of 8g/litre from the villages of Hautvillers, Dizy and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ. Special Club wines are always a delight – and the Chiquet is one of the best. Chardonnay dominance gives this wine lovely elegance and weight – all in perfect balance – drinking beautifully now and for a few years. A great adjunct to chicken, fish or even as an aperitif. The creamy roundness of the 2005 vintage makes this a perfect food wine.

CHAMPAGNE LE BRUN SERVENAY Avize – Grand Cru

Cote des Blancs – 7.5 hectares

The 'Le Brun Servenay' label was first created in 1955 comprising of vineyards from Avize, Cramant, Oger, Mancy and Grauves. The Grand Crus providing the great Chardonnay and the other villages providing small amounts of Pinot Meunier and Pinot Noir. Patrick officially took over the vinification back in 1992. The style here is taught, mineral, fresh and persistent. There is no oak utilised in any of the regular wines – with Patrick picking grapes for acidity and freshness. To maintain that vital freshness, the malo-lactic fermentation is always avoided.

Patrick is an innovator and a thinker and was the President of the Syndicat General des Vignerons de la Champagne – the governing body for the growers - from 2004 to 2009.

Le Brun Servenay 2004 V.V. Blanc de Blancs

This cuvee is always about floral, citrus, hints of pear and smoky overtones. The three old vines parcels spread across Azive and Cramant add considerable richness and weight – all held in check by a dosage of 8g/litre and no malo-lactic fermentation. The quality of 2004 is evident. 2004 is clearly a vintage of real quality – and quite an abundant one in terms of total production. 2004 shows maybe a little more finesse and elegance than the 2002 version of this. A wine to drink now and to cellar for a few years. Class crisp and elegant blanc de blancs.

Le Brun Servenay NV Rosé

Rosés from the Cote des Blancs can often be a little light and just ‘simply coloured Chardonnay’, but here we have a wine with some substance and real texture. 86% Grand Cru Chardonnay (same blend as the Brut Selection) from Avize and surrounding villages with the red wine component of 14% being oak vinified Pinot Noir/Pinot Meunier. Again no malolactic fermentation and a dosage of 8g/litre. Toasty and spicy from the Avize fruit and a hint of smoke from the oak matured red wine. A classic and a bargain. Getting popular and sells out quickly – so be quick.

94/100 Antonio Galloni. Dried apricots, pears, honey, mint and Chamomile are some of many nuances that flesh out in Le Brun Servenay’s 2004 Brut Millesime Vieilles Vignes Exhilarante. I especially like the way the 2004 fleshes out in all directions, with seemingly endless layers of sweet perfumed fruit and fabulous balance. Deep, rich and creamy, the 2004 is notable for its fabulous balance and utterly compelling personality. There is plenty of structure and power in the glass, suggesting the 2004 is best enjoyed at the dinner table.

ERIC RODEZAmbonnay– Grand Cru

Montagne de Reims - 6 hectares

Eric Rodez is the eighth generation of family growing grapes in the prestigious pinot noir producing Grand Cru village of Ambonnay. He is a true artisan of his trade who is focused on the art of terroir, old vines, oak integration and control of malo-lactic fermentation. Eric speaks of the five dimensions of Champagne that shape its style and character. Cépage, location, vineyard aspect, vinification and fermentation. All the above combined, totally determine the style and quality of the final result. He has lots of old vines all with premium exposure at mid-slope. Subtle use of small Burgundian oak and control of

malolactic fermentation allows Eric to create a brilliant range of terroir driven Champagnes. The 6 ha property is divided into 35 plots of only Grand Cru vines split roughly 55/45 Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Eric worked in Burgundy, Beaujolais and the Rhone for three years during his youth, and also worked for a year at Krug. Eric's mayor duties keep him busy – but it appears that the cat is out of the bag – Jancis Robinson and other MW's have discovered Eric Rodez! Now we see his wines in the UK and US.

‘I don’t take pleasure in making champagne, I take pleasure in making an extra-ordinary wine from

Champagne’Burgundy taught him much about oak fermentation and maturation and his work with Henri Krug re-enforced his ideas even further. Now 80% of Eric’s wines are matured in some sort of oak for various periods. Dosages are light – between 4-6g/litre - and he uses RCGM not sugar. No fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides are used. And yes, like all villages in France, some one as to be the mayor of Ambonnay!

Since 1989 Eric has systematically taken major steps to improve the health and quality of his vineyard. No longer does he use weed killers or chemical fertilizers. The long-term sustainability of the health of the soil is paramount. Eric has decided to move to full bio-dynamic viticulture. The other good news at Champagne Rodez is that Eric's son Michael is quickly gaining experience and knowledge to take over the property in the future.

Even our friend Francis Boulard got a chance to visit Eric Rodez with a group of amateur aficionados - 'Yes Victor, great wine at Eric Rodez cellar... not well-known in the French wine guides and magazines... that's the reason, it was our first visit there, this year, for our knowledge'.

Peter Liem - Champagneguide Éric Rodez’s champagnes feel crafted in the best sense of the word: they display a vinous intensity that obviously comes from quality work in the vineyards, yet they also demonstrate a sophisticated complexity and refinement that indicates a sure hand in the cellar.

Eric Rodez 'Cuvée des Crayeres' Grand Cru

A blend of 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot Noir, from 50% 2009 and many older reserve wines. 25% is matured in small oak and 80% undergoes malo-lactic fermentation. A feature of Eric's wines is the intense, minute persistent mousse. Always gently foaming with a tiny bead. Chalk and white flowers on the nose, lovely citrus and red fruits on the long palate. Powerful and complex but still light on its feet – this is a wonderful introduction to the Rodez style. Dosage is a low 5g/litre.

100% Pinot Noir, from five different vintages, 50% of which is from 2007 and then older reserve wines. 70% of the final blend has been matured in small barriques with no malolactic fermentation. Very different to the Cuveé Crayeres. Citrus, toast, red fruits and spices are in abundance here – along with hints of candied fruits. Long and unctuous – a very special and rare Blanc de Noir – a triumph of wine making, and a bench mark of Ambonnay terroir. One of the outstanding features of Eric's wines is the meticulous care he takes in looking after his reserve wines – and also the depth of age of his reserve wines. Dosage is now down to 4g/litre. Stunning. This wine trumped all the big name Prestige Champagnes in Le Point

HENRIET-BAZIN Villers-Marmery

Montagne de Reims 7.5 hectaresMarie-Noelle and father Daniel cultivate 7.5 ha of vines in Villers-Marmery 1er Cru (Chardonnay) and Verzenay, Verzy Grand Cru (Pinot Noir). The original Henriet family specialised in Champagne production whereas the Bazins were grape growers – and now four generations later, father and daughter are producing some sensational Champagne from Grand Cru and 1er Cru vineyards in some of the best locations in the Montagne de Reims. 80,000 bottles are produced annually with 40% going to the Swiss, Italy, England and U.S.. Business has been good for them and they have had to expand and move to a new cuverie and tasting area just around the corner. They had to use some of their vineyards as land for the new property. This grower is gaining some popularity with the fine wine fraternity for producing pure, unadulterated wines that express their terroir and origins. The entire range is a stand out and many Australian tourists visit here for a wonderful 'Champagne lesson' from Nicolas – Marie-Noelle's husband. Marie-Noelle is particularly passionate about the intricate art of matching food with Champagne. Nicolas runs a superb vineyard tourism business – Oenovasion. His knowledge and history of the Champagne region is outstanding.

Henriet-Bazin Brut Blanc de Noirs Grand Cru Extra Brut.We have been pleading with Marie-Noelle for a number of years to develop a lower dosage, more mineral cuveé – and finally it has arrived – but by quite an arduous journey. Whereas some vigneron's would simply take an existing cuveé and bottle it at a lower dosage, Marie-Noelle tasted her entire cuveé portfolio at different dosage levels. The result is a 100% Verzenay Pinot Noir entirely from the great 2008 vintage dosaged at 5g/litre. Now we see more minerals, tighter structure, vivacity and subtle acidity. The red fruits are less dominant and we see more chalk and hints of citrus. This is a 'one off' special cuveé. For the next incarnation of this wine – they will repeat the entire process again. It may be a Blanc de Blancs next time or? Authentic, rare and stunning. We sold out of this last year but have secured the last remaining cases. Be quick.

JACQUES LASSAIGNEMontgueux – 1e Cru

Aube – 4.7 hectaresMontgueux is a remarkable wine region – totally unique in its structural make-up. Classified as being in the ‘Cote des Bars’ region which can be often further colloquially known as the ‘Aube’ – but in fact it has little in common with that Pinot

Noir producing area. Montgueux is a tiny hill of pure chalk 100kms south of Epernay-12 kms north west of Troyes. The oenologist Daniel Thibaut from Charles Heidsieck described Montgueux as ‘the Montrachet of the Champagne country’ with 186 hectares of vines planted to 85% Chardonnay with a perfect south easterly aspect. Top soils with a depth of 1 metre and chalk to a depth of 60 metres. The chalk here has numerous outcrops of silex – adding to the spicy mineral complexities of the wines. The soils here are 13 million years old–very much older than the Grand Cru Cote des Blancs. All of these elements combined allow for perfect ripening with appropriate levels of moisture in the chalky soils. More than 50% of the grapes are sold to the likes of Charles Heidsieck, Piper Heidsieck, Louis Roederer, Nicolas Feuillate and other large growers. The big houses are happy to pay high prices for Montgueux grapes. Certainly one of the biggest secrets in all of Champagne.

Jacques Lassaigne Blanc de Blancs Les Vignes de Montgueux

This is an assemblage of 9 different old vine Chardonnay parcels from Montgueux. 50% 2010 and older reserve wines. All of Emmanuel's wines are now 'Extra Brut' with no dosage. He has achieved perfect maturity and ripeness across his vineyard parcels and no longer needs any dosage – all of his wines go thru the malo-lactic fermentation and hence have a natural level of roundness. The Montgueux style is tropical and mineral, with salinity, chalk and acidity all in perfect balance. The mousse is pin-point and the palate is long, persistent and precise. Always have a second bottle of this wine on stand-by, the first bottle disappears so quickly that often one can get into an argument about who drank the most!

His wines are to be found in all the best wine shops, wine bars and restaurants throughout Europe – and especially Paris. Demand for his Champagnes is very high and prices for his labour intensive production is starting to reflect the effort and quality.

MARC HEBRARTMareuil-sur-Ay – 1er Cru

Marne Valley – 15.5 hectares

Jean-Paul Hebrart runs this property and is one of the super growers in this very much under-rated village. Mareuil-sur-Ay is rated at 99% right next door to Ay. There are many experts who believe it deserves true 100% Grand Cru status. It is home to Billecart-Salmon and the also the famous Philipponnat "Clos des Goisses” vineyard at the extreme eastern end. The style here is similar to Ay but with maybe a

little more minerality and finesse. Jean-Paul has some great Chardonnay in Chouilly and Oiry with a very high average vine

age. Quality is at a very high level, to the extent that Jean-Paul used to supply grapes to Bollinger. Annual production from 15.5 ha of vines is 105,000 bottles.

Jean-Paul is married to Isabelle Diebolt – daughter of Jacques Diebolt - one of the truly great growers in Cramant. The vineyards are spread across Ay, Mareuil-sur-Ay, Avenay Val d'Or, Bisseuil and also some prestigious Grand Cru Chardonnay vineyards in Chouilly and Oiry on the other side of the Marne. Dosages are low and the terroir is allowed to shine. He is also a member of the ‘Club de Tresors’ and produces a sensational ‘Special Club’ Cuvée.

Jean-Paul has also bought a small vineyard parcel in the Grand Cru Avize.

TERRY THEISE: The single best young wine I tasted in Champagne this year, and as good as it gets. Disgorged November 2012, the blend is the same as the above ̀07-vintage, but this is of another order, and shows 2008 at its most sublime. Lunar, mystic aromas, it’s why the vintage is so exquisite and potentially great. And no mistake - this is great wine that has everything, plus the dancing animation of all its hundred elements; Champagne at its most bewitching, all leading to a truly astonishing and endless finish that defines complexity and beauty.

SELEQUEPierry- 1er Cru

Sud Epernay – 12 hectares

Seleque is a relatively new discovery in our Champagne portfolio – but a very significant one indeed. This is a relatively new family business, with Henri Seleque planting vineyards in 1965, and bottling his own wine in 1969. The two sons, Richard and John started working in the business in 1974 – and finally bottling their own wines in 1981. Now we have Richard's eldest daughter Nathalie, and John's son Jean-Marc working in the business. Jean-Marc is overseeing the

viticultural side of the business, and at only 24 years of age, he is showing himself to be mature, focussed and passionate. Vineyard and environmental sustainability is paramount. Their 12 hectares of vineyards are spread across 40 parcels over eight different villages – three being the great 1er Crus of Pierry, Vertus and Dizy. The varietal mix is 60% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Meunier and 10% Pinot Noir – with vineyard age varying from 18 up to

60 years. It is a nice mix to have, the Chardonnay gives finesse and elegance, the Meunier provides roundness and complexity, and the Pinot offers crisp red fruit characters. Jean-Marc has worked in Bordeaux, California and at Domain Chandon in the Yarra Valley in 2008 with some fond memories and amazing stories of his time there. He is in the process of converting 7ha of vineyards to bio-dynamic viticulture. Most wines go through malo-lactic fermentation, and most of the reserve wines are stored in small oak barrels. Also there are some new cuveés on the horizon – with the new fully oak matured cuveé Partition just being released.

One feature of the Seleque wines was the noticeable quality of all the blends containing 2008 material. The growers are generally very quiet about speculating on vintage quality – but it was certainly evident to us that anything based on 2008 was sensational. The word is out that 2008 is certainly a supreme vintage and is comparable to 1996 – and probably superior to 2002. The acidity and structure is in perfect balance and the wines will repay cellaring. Irrespective of the quality of current vintages – we are in a fortunate period of Champagne viticulture – there have been no mediocre vintages in the last decade – leading to excellent quality non-vintage cuveés.

Seleque Cuvee Reserve Extra Brut

60% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Meunier and 10% Pinot Noir – from a base of 2008 and 40% reserve wines – with 20% seeing some oak maturation – all from the 1er Crus of Pierry, Dizy and Vertus. With four years on lees we see subtle mineral and toasty elements, hints of floral and citrus. Complex and long with a perfectly judged dosage keeping the palate crisp and clean. Outstanding wine making gives this perfect balance and amazing length. Dosage is a low 5g/L. Magic and a bargain.

Jacques Dupont in his annual Champagne review December 2012 in 'Le Point' magazine rates this at 18/20 – easily trumping all the competition – including Krug, Dom Perignon and Salon.

'Complex nose evokes undergrowth, the smell of cut oak, citrus on the palate a subtle mixture between freshness and maturity. A refined wine, elegant and deep, with a mineral finish over chalk. 18/20'

Seleque Serenade Rose de Saignée 2008

85% Pinot Noir and 15% Chardonnay all from 2008 has produced an amazing rose. The Pinot has been 'triaged' (selected) two times, once by the pickers – choosing only the best bunches, and a second selection in the cuverie. It is important when making a Saignée rose to only press pristine quality grapes. There is colour and flavour extraction from the skins and damaged skins will lead to impure flavours. The subtle maceration phase lasted for 72 hours. Citrus and spice is evident thanks to the Chardonnay component being aged in 300 litre oak barrels. Dosage 6g/litre. Smoky red fruit of the Pinot component is beautifully balanced by the citrus zest of the oak matured Chardonnay. Sour cherries in abundance, hints of strawberry and exotic fruits. This is essentially a 'vintage' rose – which is rare to find in Champagne. Quite an extra-ordinary cuveé, and it sold out quickly last year, but we managed to reserve and hold on to a few more cases. Stunning quality.

Seleque Partition 2008 Extra BrutThis is the first of Jean-Marc's new cuveés and is a based on a seven barrel selection mimicking a musical score (partition in French). Five barrels of Chardonnay, one barrel of Pinot Meunier and one barrel of Pinot Noir have been selected from the best vineyards and best pressing. The Chardonnay component is immediately evident revealing mineral and citrus nuances, with the red fruits adding power and a smoky backbone. The oak is subtle and invisible – as good oaking handling should be. Amazing purity, finesse and length – all the hallmarks of the great 2008 vintage are stamped over this truly stunning wine. With 48 months on lees this is drinking superbly now – but it can certainly handle further cellar maturation. Very limited. Dosage is perfectly judged at 4g/litre. FRANCIS BOULARDCauroy-les-Hermonville - 1er Cru

Montagne de Reims - 3 hectaresAs from 2010, one third of Champagne Raymond Boulard has become Champagne Francis Boulard. The three children of Raymond Boulard have chosen to pursue their own professional careers. His daughter Delphine, who has worked alongside him since 2003, and is completely at ease in the vineyards, as well as in the winery, will assist Francis in this venture. The House's deep convictions are unchanged: The direction of the “new house” will be resolutely turned towards bio-dynamics and organics. This direction has already been in place for several years, and a great part of the vineyards have already been certified as being “organic agriculture” (certification Ecocert.)

Over the last few years we have seen that Francis has been ill at ease with the decisions of his brother and sister. Francis wanted to move towards total organic viticulture with less intervention, oak maturation, lowering yields and smaller parcel vinification. These ideas did not fit in with the family – so finally the split had to come – and Francis will be the better for it. Unfortunately he only has one third of his vines to work with – so quantities will be reduced. Maybe Francis will be able to lease vineyards – buying vineyards is prohibitively expensive. His wines are becoming iconic and scarce – so get in quick while availability is reasonable.

Francis also has his wines on some great restaurant lists – many in Paris and lots of Michelin starred restaurants all over the world. Initially many cuvees were available in both Brut Nature and 'regular dosage', but clients (including us) have always preferred one over the other with consistent results – and Francis has responded with only doing a single cuvee.

Francis Boulard Les Murgiers Cuvée Réserve - Blanc de Noirs70% Pinot Meunier, 30% Pinot Noir, with reserve wines aged in oak barrels. 2010 and older reserve wines from 2009 and 2008 – all great years in the Champagne region. This is a new cuvée for Francis and it certainly shows his attention to detail. Now vinified entirely in a blend of small and large oak barrels. Super fine mousse, lovely aromas of white fruits with red fruits and spice on the palate. Dosage is just on Extra-brut at 5 g/litre. Great purity and length with the subtle oak integration adding nice complexity. This cuvee gets better and better each year. The super fine mousse and finesse are hallmarks of this exceptional wine.

91+/100 GalloniNV The NV(2010) Extra Brut Grand Cru Les Murgieres is mind-blowingly beautiful even though it has only recently been disgorged. Green pears, white apples flower and crushed rocks are some of the many notes that flow from the glass. Even though the Murgiers is made entirely from red grapes, there is a level of focus and finesse that is very much reminiscent of Chardonnay at this stage, most likely the result of the recent disgorgement and a cool vintage that yielded tense, taut wines. I imagine the 2010 will start to be fully expressive in another 6-12 months. The current release is 70% Pinot Meunier and 30% Pinot Noir, 2010 vintage. Dosage was 3 grams per litre. This bottle was disgorged on October 23, 2012.

Francis Boulard 2006 Millesime Extra-Brut

50% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Meunier. Average vine age is 30 years old and this shows on a complex and intense palate. This cuveé is now fully vinified and matured in oak barrels. Powerful and unctuous, complex smoke and spice aromas, palate full of white fruits and brioche. Mousse is tiny and persistent. The quality of the Chardonnay speaks strongly here – chalk and spice, minerals and citrus – lovely length and perfect balance. Whereas the 2005 of this was all about red fruits and weight, the 2006 shows more minerals and floral aspects. Dosage is now down to 3g/litre. We sold out of this last year but managed to grab a few last remaining cases. Thank you Francis! Stunning wine.

Freshly cut flowers, almonds, pears, apricots all jump form the glass in this full-bodied, powerful Champagne. The 2006 boasts serious depth. Even with its considerable texture, there is absolutely no excess heaviness. Instead, the 2006 has a lightness and grace that is mind-bending. I loved it. This is a fabulous showing from Boulard. The 2006 is 50% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir and 20% Pinot Noir vinified in oak. Dosage was 3 grams per litre. This bottle was disgorged on July 24, 2012.

$54.00/bt pre-arrival Code: 2316

$72.00 /bt pre-arrival Code: 3817
