Pre-Calculus (Honors) Syllabus Materials: 3 ring binder Calculator (TI – 84) Loose leaf paper Pencils CLASS POLICIES: Attendance: Welcome to Pre-Calculus! I am delighted you have decided to pursue such a rigorous course and look forward to helping you achieve success. To thrive in a mathematics course, it is important for you to attend class regularly. Many students have great difficulty trying to learn math work on their own after an absence. Classwork tends to build upon prior learning. If a student misses just one day, they have difficulty following new assignments. When you are absent, check the website and calendar for your assignments. Failure to make up work (within the designated time restraints) will result in a grade deduction for that assignment. These deadlines are: 9/15, 10/23, 12/4, 1/4. An absence of one class period will not excuse a student from turning in previously assigned work on the day they return to class. Grading: Tests/Projects 60% Quarter 1 40% Quizzes 30% Quarter 2 40% Daily HW/CW 10% Exam 20% Students will take the NC Final Exam for Pre-Calculus (NCFE) at the completion of the course. Homework: Homework will be checked daily for completion and you will earn one homework grade per unit. Be sure to keep up with your homework calendar for the unit as this will inform you off all assignments. It will also serve as a record of your work to be turned at the culmination of the unit. You will receive full credit for an assignment if all problems are written, numbered, attempted, and all necessary work is shown. Half of the points are taken off if only half of your work is completed. If you do not have your homework, no points are awarded. If you are absent, it is your responsibility to show me the assignment. Quizzes: Quizzes are to be expected every week and may or may not be announced. If you are absent on the day of a quiz, your unit test grade will replace that quiz grade. Additionally, if your unit test grade is higher than your quiz grade, I will replace your quiz grade with your test grade once per quarter. Tests: Tests will always be announced. If you are absent the day before a test, you must still take the test with your class. If you are absent the day of a test, you have ONE WEEK to make up the test with NO DEDUCTIONS. If you wait until the quarter deadlines to makeup a test, then you will have a deduction up to 30 Mrs. Mullen Room 1906 Phone: (919) 554-6303 Email:[email protected] www.jmullenrhs.pbworks.com

CLASS POLICIES:Attendance: Welcome to Pre-Calculus!

Grading: Tests/Projects 60% Quarter 1 40% Quizzes 30% Quarter 2 40% Daily HW/CW 10% Exam 20%

Students will take the NC Final Exam for Pre-Calculus (NCFE) at the completion of the course.

If you wait until the quarter deadlines to makeup a test, then you will have a deduction up to 30 points taken off of your test grade and may not have sufficient time to complete test corrections. There are no exceptions to this rule.

Give Me Back My Points: After a unit test has been graded, any student earning below a 90 will have the opportunity to recover points on their test grade. Students will be given a dedicated period of time to review and rework questions they missed on the test with teacher and peer assistance. Upon completion of test corrections, students will be eligible to complete a shorter “Give me back my points” assessment comprised of similar questions from the test.

Daily Quizzes: Most class periods will begin with a short review quiz. We will review these each day to ensure that you are understanding and reviewing previous concepts. After five Daily Quizzes, I will drop your lowest grade and you will earn a quiz grade.

Tutoring: Tutoring is recommended for students with averages below 70%. If you have any additional questions or feel that you are getting behind, I will be available after school on Mondays from 2:30-3:30pm. Please make sure that you have transportation if you are staying after school. Remember- it is your grade and only you can pull it up or bring it down!

Teacher Website/ Remind: There are several ways to keep in contact with me. I will use the class website (www.jmullenrhs.pbworks.com) to post the syllabus, homework assignments, and other helpful information. You will also find instructions for subscribing to Remind. I encourage you to use your wcpss student email to email me with any questions you may have. I make it my goal to return all emails within 24 hours.

Calculator Use: The RHS Math Department recommends that each student obtain a TI-84 graphing calculator for personal use. Because we value academic rigor and excellence, in addition to this there will be calculators available for use during class time only. We strongly encourage your student to have their own calculator for homework and preparation for upcoming assessments. Any student wishing to use a classroom calculator MUST sign and return the RHS Calculator Contract. They will be assigned a specific calculator for the duration of the course and will be responsible for that calculator during class time. Use of a calculator can be revoked if it is being misused or damaged.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device ) : BYOD means students bring their own devices to school for educational purposes. In the classroom, students will use devices responsibly, and only with the permission and direction of the teacher or other staff member. The increased use of technology in RHS classrooms will “power up” student success today, and for the future. Just like tardy table, violations accumulate by each individual class over the course of each quarter. Violations restart each quarter.

First violation: Verbal warning. Second violation: Final verbal warning.Third violation: Student will be verbally directed to select one of two options:

A. Student will shut down the device and place it in a secure location in the classroom as designated by instructor.B. Student will shut down the device and place it in their own personal belongings for the remainder of the class.

Fourth and subsequent violations: Student will be escorted to ISS for the remainder of the period. Device is confiscated by administrator. Loss of

BYOD privilege may be revoked by administrator.
