TL2 Improve the quality of teaching

Our first round of lesson observations is showing a marked increase in the number of good and outstanding lessons within the school. In particular we can see clear strategies coming through to develop your child’s literacy. Next half term we will be focusing on creating opportunities to improve their reading in all subjects.

BA 1 Exceed national attendance

The attendance currently is running at above national average although we are concerned with year 11. Please continue to make sure students are coming to school.

BA2 Ensure all vulnerable groups are making expected progress

Over the last 2 school weeks all subjects have been carrying out assessments and feeding back to students on how they can progress. Please talk to your child about their progress and what they need to do to improve.

L1 Sharpen the leadership

On Friday the leadership team will be carrying out inset off site. This will be a two day event to explore how the team can function to its maximum potential. During our absence our partnership school, Leventhorpe are stepping in to help run the school and the following staff will be at Turnford for the day:

Jon Locke Headteacher

Dale Reeves Deputy Head Pastoral

We thank them for helping us and giving us this opportunity to spend quality time as a team. We have obviously told the students that as usual their best behaviour and attitude is expected to leave our visitors with an excellent view of Turnford.

Well done to the significant number of students who signed up for the Student Council and the Restorative Justice Council. These two councils will help shape the decisions taken at Turnford.

L2 Ensure consistency

Please support the new enrichment uniform by ensuring that your child comes in the enrichment sweat top, white PE shirt and black or blue tracksuit bottoms every week. This week there was a fantastic positive atmosphere on Wednesday afternoons as students engaged and enjoyed the activities set out.

Payment for the new Enrichment top is £15 and cash or cheques should be handed into the student office this month. Or our preferred option is for you to pay through parent pay.

Please be aware we will be consulting you over the enrichment process at the end of November and new choices will be out for students to select from the start of December.

A1 All subjects are in line with national averages.

If your child needs extra support please be aware:

ACE is open at break and lunchtimes.

Homework club in the LRC is available to students – after school till 4.00 most days as well as lunchtime 1.20-1.50 – Monday, Tuesday & Fridays. Mrs Saunders our LRC Manager is available to help students who need it.

Key revision sessions running this term – information to follow.

A2 Develop a whole school approach to literacy, numeracy and ICT.

In order to support your child, please make sure that whenever your child writes or types they are following the basic principles of punctuation, full stops and capitals and paragraphs. Don’t let them get away with poor punctuation as it seeps into their formal writing.

Word of the week this week has been – hyperbole – a deliberate exaggeration used for effect.

Parents and Pupils Team Building Event

On the 6th November the Positive Change Programme (PCP) staff ran a pilot event for current and past PCP parents and their children. The idea had been suggested by one of the parents during our summer term parent meeting (this is now held on a half termly basis with current and ex PCP parents). We took seven pupils to Harlow Outdoor Education Centre where unbeknown to the pupils their parents were waiting to meet them. The aim of the day was to take both parents and pupils out of their comfort zone, to learn about each other and to learn together by trying something new.

The day gave parents and pupils a chance to see each other in an environment that was different. It was really great to watch the group bond as the day went on and to see both parents and pupils starting to work well as a team, listening to one another and working together to achieve a common goal.

The feedback from the day showed that both the parents and pupils enjoyed the day and learnt a lot about one another. We will definitely be running similar days in the future.

Yesterday 8 girls from Yr7-10 competed in the annual district table tennis tournament. The girls competed in the under 13 and under 16 age category against several other schools in the area. Both teams performed exceptionally well with some outstanding performances in the Under 16 team.

This was the Under 13 team’s first ever table tennis tournament and they played well in some very close games with results often coming down to a win/loss of 1 or 2 points. The girls managed a fantastic 4th place.

The Under 16 team played exceptionally well and were the eventual winners of the tournament in a very close final against Presdales winning by just one point.  This means that they will progress to the County finals representing bothTurnford and the A10 partnership.

Below are the two teams and photos.
