GLOBAL SASKATCHEWAN MOBILE TWINSApplied Electronics and Frontline delivered a pair of new ENG vans to Shaw Media/Global News Saskatchewan this August. Seen here prior to donning their Shaw Media livery, the vans will be in daily service supporting the Global News operations in Saskatoon (CFSK) and Regina (CFRE). The vehicles are based on the Ford E350 V8 chassis – the Frontline configuration is known as ENG-LT. Notably these vans are equipped with MEPS 6.3kw on-engine power systems, which replace gasoline generator sets, and save about 200kg in weight. The vans have 14.7m (48’) Will-Burt masts, with Lukon coating to ward off the Saskatchewan ice fog!

Applied Electronics completed the integration for both vans within two weeks of their arrival to Applied Electronics warehouse from Frontline’s conversion facility. Among the production goodies: Panasonic video switcher, Boland 20” and dual 8.4” monitors, Evertz video &

audio distribution and AVP patchfields, audio mixer and IFB control by Studio Technologies, Telex intercom and Lectrosonics wireless IFB systems.

Established in 1989, Accessible Media Inc. is a non-profit, multi-media organization that operates VoicePrint and The Accessible Channel – TACtv, making print and broadcast media accessible to more than 5 million Canadians with significant vision or hearing impairments. For two decades VoicePrint has been Canada’s leading provider of audio versions of published current news and information. VoicePrint is the world’s largest audio-reading service in terms of number of homes accessed. Launched in January 2009, The Accessible Channel broadcasts, 24/7, open-described and closed-captioned versions of popular, current TV shows and favourite movies to a broad audience.

AMI approached Applied Electronics to upgrade the infrastructure in their Hamilton Playout Facility. The challenge was to design a simple-to-use, semi-automated interface that allowed operators to select outgoing or return feeds, in stereo or in 5.1 surround sound, at the touch of a button. A secondary challenge was to keep AMI on the air while replacing their current infrastructure!

• Applied Electronics has a lot of dedicated employees. To keep that mojo going we drink A LOT of coffee. At our head office alone, we consume approximately 800 litres of coffee a year!

• Our shippers Kim, Wayne, Phil, Gerry, Isis and Lindsay are very busy throughout the year. They receive over 55,000 delivery pieces per year.

• AEL is always on the move! We have 23 service vehicles company wide, which travel a total 460,000 kms per year. With that many kilometers, our vehicles could drive from our Toronto office to our Burnaby office 138 times!

• Our Broadcast Systems Group and AV Division at Applied facilitates approximately 700 projects per year.

• 1 out of every 4 employees at Applied Electronics can either play a musical instrument, plays in a band currently, or can sing. We are a very talented bunch!!

• There is no town too small for our services. This year, our tech Morris Fenerty (AEL Edmonton) completed a job in the town of High Level, Alberta. The population of that town is 3887 people. This install was the smallest town that Applied Electronics completed a job this year.
