VietnamVietnam may still be mysterious and unknown to many, but today, more and more travellers are discovering a fascinating country that is at a crossroads of traditions and modernity – where the major cities are dynamic but not polluted, the people are unfailingly friendly and the rural areas still dominated by farmers working in the lush paddy fields.

Vietnam has something to offer all types of travellers, with a population which hovers at nearly 83 million its major cities are bustling and fast paced. The country is still able to hold its unique old world charm with its intriguing culture and history, shaped by its philosophies, religions and beliefs.

Travelling away from the major cities to its stunning coastal getaways Vietnam has some of the most divine beaches on offer. Heading inland stand majestic, soaring mountains, some of which are cloaked by dense misty forests. If the landscape is not what you are after, Vietnam has some of the best shopping in Asia, with its many food stalls, it holds a special varied range of traditional dishes, there are said to be nearly 500. Its rare individual charm is yours to discover.

CambodiaCambodia is a country blessed by a rich history and much cultural heritage. Far from its turbulent past, Cambodia is a safe and intriguing destination offering the visitor an unforgettable experience as they come to discover it’s once hidden treasures. Neighbouring Thailand to the West and Vietnam to the East there is much to see including the vast wetland of Tonle Sap lake, an abundance of ancient temples and impressive natural scenery, such as the empty beaches, mighty rivers and the remote forests. This jewel in the crown of Southeast Asia will surely make a fascinating and enchanting destination.

Laos The landlocked nation of Laos is considered by many to be the last frontier in Southeast Asia. After years of isolation, Laos is slowly opening to the outside world, but it retains its own quiet rhythm and charm. Laos awes travellers with the beauty of its countryside, the sound of monks chanting and ancient temples hidden amongst lush jungle. Laos is a place of fascination and adventure amid a diverse and hospitable land of people.

MyanmarMyanmar sits at the crossroads of Asia’s great civilizations of India and China, and looks out onto the vast Indian Ocean next to Thailand. To this day Myanmar remains one of the most mysterious and undiscovered destinations in the world. A land of breathtaking beauty and charm yet only recently emerging into the modern world, visitors to Myanmar will be captivated most of all by the country’s most gracious and hospitable people.

The Best Time to TravelVietnam consists of three distinct climatic zones and the North to South geography dictates that the weather from one region to the next will differ at any given time. Tropical monsoons occur from October to April in the centre and from May to September in the north and south. It is almost totally dry throughout the rest of the year. However it can get exceptionally hot all year round, but the north has a cooler time between October and April. Temperatures around the country can reach up to 40°C in the height of the hot and rainy season (May to September), but the northern highlands and Hanoi can often seem much cooler in the winter.

There is no one ideal time to visit Vietnam as a whole but at any time of year there will be sun somewhere. The high season is from September to March but inclement weather can disrupt travel in the centre of the country during this period, particularly from September to December. For the beaches in the centre of Vietnam, Danang, Hoi An and Nha Trang, it is best to go between May and August. The autumn months, from September to November, are considered the best time to visit Halong Bay, when there is a better chance of clear skies, which provide you with an opportunity of seeing Halong Bay at its best.

Cambodia has two distinct seasons. The rainy season runs from May to October when it can rain for short spells in the afternoon and generally be accompanied with high humidity. The dry season is from November to March, with temperatures sometimes getting up to 40°C around April.

Laos experiences their monsoon between April and October, which brings very heavy rains – especially in the South. Rain can be quite sporadic and rarely affects travel however in the more remote regions some roads do become impassable, particularly when the rains are at their heaviest between the months of July to October. From November to March the weather is cool and dry, less humidity and the temperatures bearable, while March to June sees the temperatures start to soar to the high 30’s.

Myanmar has three climatic seasons throughout the year. The monsoon starts at the end of May bringing heavy rains; the dry season starts in November with lower temperatures and then the heat returns in February until May reaching the highest temperatures of the year of up to over 40°C. The rain is generally heaviest around Rangoon. To enjoy a pleasant stay in Burma the best time to go is between November and February, after the monsoon season but before the heat waves. After February, if you crave cooler temperatures, you could visit the mountains or the coast.

For the most part we use 3 star accommodation where possible, but in some areas we utilize the best available accommodation which may be a private homestay, train sleeper or boat. Accommodation will have private facilities, is well located and we will obviously advise you otherwise should this not apply. Many of the hotels have excellent dining rooms and public areas with swimming pools. It is possible to upgrade accommodation to 4 or 5 star where available. Throughout you will have the services of experienced local guides. Transportation varies from airplanes, coaches, trains, cars, bicycles and mini buses, to speed boats and local boats.

Getting ThereVietnam, Laos and Cambodia are well served by Vietnam Air and Singapore Airlines from Australia. Airfares change rapidly and there are often great deals with short ticketing deadlines, therefore we have not included airfares in our packages. Have your travel agent contact Adventure Destinations for a quotation on the many special airfares available.

Health RequirementsIt is mandatory that you contact your health advisor regarding health requirements that may be applicable in the countries you are visiting.

Local DressDress standards are conservative throughout this region so please be aware of this while packing. Loose, lightweight, long clothing is both respectful and cool in the predominately hot Asian climate. In the winter months the extra length will keep you warm! Generally speaking, neat and tidy clothing is appreciated. Shorts should be knee length and singlets/tank tops are not recommended.
