and measurement instruments, however from time to time is calledinto emergency (panic) situations. Forthis occasional but critical use,Videotek offers a means for a specificuser to pre-configure the instrumentwith ‘super-user’ access privileges. The instant recall mode can be setexactly as required by the super-user,without interfering with day to dayoperator’s preset parameters. Eightstandard presets are available for re-configuration of the VTM-300G usingsingle button press.

Versatile Display

The VTM-300G features allow theuser to modify various displayparameters while never losing criticalinformation. The VTM-300G includesa variety of screen views including adisplay flip feature that instantly andautomatically reconfigures thedisplay. The position of the displayelements are reversed vertically forcritical applications desiring thetechnical waveform and vectordisplays at the top of the screen.

Display Flip, Critical Waveform,Vector, and Alarm status displays arerepositioned to the top of the screen.

Other features offered by the VTM-300G are custom screens forGamut, Analog/Digital Relativetiming, Alarm Settings, Alarm

Status, and Captured Frame. Anytime you need a closer look at anindividual display, just press the“Display” button for a high-resolution 1024x768 on screenpresentation. A menu configures thecycle of the Display button. PressingDisplay can cycle through full framedisplays of Full Frame Picture,Waveform, Vector, Gamut, Audio,Analog/Digital Relative VideoTiming, Alarm Settings, andCaptured Frame.

Many Instruments in One

The VTM-300G, in essence, integrates a traditional waveformmonitor, vectorscope, audio displayand picture monitor into a singledevice. The 1-RU instrumentproduces a multi-display on astandard computer monitor.

Although Videotek has combined manyproducts into a small, lightweight unit,we have not left out any operationalfeatures. All standard controls found inwaveform monitor, vector scope, professional picture monitor, and audiodisplay products are also found inVideotek’s VTM-300G. We have alsoensured that controls used mostfrequently are available on the frontpanel and do not require multiplebutton presses for access.

Controls such as Waveform position(H & V), Vector Rotation, LineSelect, Waveform Filters, WaveformGain and Mag., etc. are standard, dedicated controls. To move thewaveform position, simply turn thefront panel control; the VTM-300Goperates exactly like any scope, notlike a computer-based clone!

Making conformance measurementsis the fundamental charge of test and

measurement instruments. All test andmeasurement instruments mustmeasure and monitor the quality ofthe signals that we use day to day.The fact that Videotek has integratedmultiple products into one familiarpackage adds many advantages.

The measurement of every pertinentparameter in a video line can beperformed quickly and accuratelywhen all the ‘integrated products’operate as a whole. The VTM-300G’sline select feature is much like manytraditional waveform monitors; that’swhere the similarity ends. In lineselect mode not only is the selectedline of video displayed on thewaveform monitor, it issimultaneously displayed on thevector scope and indicated in thepicture monitor as well.

To operate it, press the front panelline select button, turn the line selectcontrol to indicate a particular line ofvideo (numeric value of the selectedline automatically appears on screen)and the VTM-300G displays allmeasurements, quickly and concisely.Pressing on the line select controltoggles between Odd and Even Fields, very intuitive.

composite formats (composite analogvideo inputs display as compositeonly). Waveform zoom, vector zoom, audio zoom, and waveform sweep -1H, 2H 1V, & 2V, fixed and variablevertical gain are standard features. Inaddition to a display in its nativeYCBCR, the VTM-300G has thecapability to display serial digitalvideo as RGB and composite, thusallowing evaluation of the SDI signal,as it would be distributed in otherformats.

Display two video inputs, of the sameformat, using the VTM-300G’s A/BOverlay and Parade feature. Thepowerful front panel Edit buttonallows modifications to the waveformdisplay, two 1H or 1V waveforms ofthe same input can be displayed usingindividual filters (Flat, Lowpass, orChroma) or two inputs can bedisplayed in A/B fashion comparingone to another. The front panel lineselect can be used to display selectedlines of either A or B, as well.

The Waveform Zoom control isunique to Videotek’s VTM series, press it once to get variable verticalgain, again for a magnified view ofthe bottom portion of the waveform,

and again for the upper portion of thewaveform. When in the ‘variable’setting, turn the Waveform V controlto add any amount of gain from 0.5xto 10x in 0.1x steps. The last variablegain setting is stored in memory, byinput and ready for a future userequiring the same variable settingand is available by one press of theWaveform Zoom button.

The utmost in Waveform displayquality is presented by the VTM-300G’s waveform. It has thelook of a traditional ‘analogproduced’ CRT display whiledemonstrating accuracy of the digitalvideo processing that produced it.

VTM-300G Multi-Screen View. Notethe waveform display with amplitudeand time cursors enabled.

The waveform display includes timeand amplitude cursors. Cursors can bepositioned anywhere on the waveformdisplay. Each set of cursors has areference and delta indication. Thereference cursor is representedgraphically as a solid line, moving theposition of this cursor determines thepoint where the measurement begins.

The delta cursor is represented as adashed line, moving its positioninstructs the VTM-300G to measure

the difference between the referenceposition and delta position. The valuemeasured is displayed on screen. Thesign of the value is displayed as a‘- or +’ signature preceding themeasured value. Amplitude and timecursors can be used simultaneously orindependently. The VTM-300G takesadvantage of cursors when settingalarm parameters. During systemconfiguration, alarm thresholds are setusing similar waveform cursors anddata readout.

Vector Displays

Traditional component and compositevector displays are included, withselectable 75% and 100% targets. Each display automatically selects theappropriate graticule based on theselected input and its format.

Vector display with Reference andDelta cursors used to measure colorphase.

Vector cursors are handy in measuringcolor phase values. Two cursors areprovided, the solid cursor is thereference vector; the dashed cursor isthe delta vector. The vector displayhas a readout of the phase measuredby the difference in cursor position.Move the reference cursor to theappropriate position on the vectordisplay, and then adjust the delta

cursor to the required position. Thedifference (sign and phase value - indegrees) is read out on screen. Alsouse the cursor as a marker of colorreference. When a production requiresa specific matte color for abackground, place the cursor at thephase of the required color mattevector; next adjust the hue of thesource until it lands on the cursor. Thecolor can be repeatedly matchedprecisely with little or no effort. Justanother way the VTM-300G makeslife a little easier. All cursors can bestored in a preset and recalled with asingle button press.

Digitally produced RGB andEncoded Gamut displays are intuitiveand exclusive to Videotek.

Gamut Display

Videotek is the industry expert inmonitoring and processing serialdigital video signals for gamutcompliance. Videotek has hadpatented gamut conformance alarmsand displays in a variety of test andmeasurement instruments for morethan 11 years, and is the industryleader in serial digital legalizationproducts.

The VTM-300G series introduces theexclusive digitally produced gamutmonitor with measurement andautomatic alarms. The patented

Videotek digital gamut display formonitoring RGB and encoded gamutcompliance is available only in theVTM-300G and its high definitioncounter part in the VTM-450EHD/SD.

The same display format is used forboth RGB and Encoded formattedsignals and is the most intuitivedisplay available. The digital gamutdisplay plots two points for each colorthe maximum and minimumexcursion of that color space (derivedfrom the color and luminance values)as a polar coordinate. This polar plotis somewhat similar to traditionalvector display, the difference beingthat the vector only plots the chromaamplitude and phase information, while the digital gamut plots theupper and lower excursion of thegamut of each color. These displayslet the operator visualize whether thedisplayed serial digital is gamutcompliant in an easy to interpretfashion.

Anyone experienced with a vectorscope, is an instant expert on the useof the gamut display. The digitalgamut display includes graticulemarkings depicting the gamut rangeof color bars for the selected format. These markings present the operator avisual guide as to the excursion ofsignal vs. that of the color barsaturation and gamut for signal formatdisplayed.

The inner and outer rings of thedisplay indicate the gamut range forthe format of video selected. For postfacilities that may be working for avariety of clients with differing gamutrequirements, the VTM-300Gprovides adjustment to the minimum

and maximum allowable gamutexcursions. These settings can besaved as presets for instant re-configuration and recall. Adjustingthese ‘min/max’ values moves thegraticule rings on the displayappropriately; away from or towardthe center.

Another feature that is exclusive toVideotek is a visual warning of gamutviolation. When the gamut alarms areenabled, the graticule’s inner andouter rings turn color (red) warningthe operator that the signal displayedis out of the gamut range. There isnever any question as to gamutcompliance or of the offending out-of-gamut color.

The VTM-300G gamut display beingvery similar for RGB and encodedformats, means that there is no needfor an operator to learn how tointerpret multiple types of displays, all the information required tointerpret gamut is presented in asimilar manner.

The VTM-300G’s powerful displayincludes not only gamut, but also thewaveform, picture, and time code ofthe problematic video. There is nevera question as to the source of theproblem.

Analog / Digital RelativeTiming Display

With the addition of serial digitalvideo to an analog video facility, afew new system problems arise.Timing requirements for analogvideo are determined by systemhardware that is switching ormixing multiple sources. Mostmodern analog production switchersactually have a digital infrastructurethat allows a window of timing, for

example + or - 1/2 of a line.

Many products have been produced tomonitor and measure this difference, the most common being a

Analog / Digital relative timingdisplay. Directly measures the timingdifference between video sources andreference.

combination of a waveform monitorand vectorscope; both locked to anexternal reference. Analog compositesignals include H and V sync andcolor sub-carrier. Analog systemtiming is proper when all thesynchronizing signals arrive in timewith respect to each other, asmeasured at a specific point in thesystem.

Determining system-timingdifferences of serial digital signals isdone in a slightly different manner, asthere are no synchronization signals. The first task is to ensure that thevertical interval occurs at the samepoint, this can be done using awaveform monitor with A/B overlayin 1V or 2V. Time the source undertest so that the active video begins atthe same point. Now switch the scopeto 2 H and adjust the timing so thatthe EAV (or SAV) line up. Thecomplication of this procedure is thatthere isn’t a way to overlay the analogsignal onto the digital signal. The

current generation of waveformmonitors will only allow overlay ofsignal of similar formats.

The VTM-300G’s timing display wasdesigned as a solution to this problem. The VTM-300G has a graduated scaledenoting the timing differences ofselected signals with major marksrepresenting lines of video (upperscale), and a second scale in micro-seconds (lower scale). A data displayprovides a read-out of the numericvalue (from 37 nsec through all linesof video).

Any two sources can be mapped tothis display. Selections are Black-burst reference, analog video inputsand serial digital video inputs. Therelative timing display is capable ofmeasuring the differences betweeneither analog composite signals, theanalog reference vs. a analogcomposite source, any two serialdigital sources, either serial digitalsource vs. reference, and either analoginput vs. either digital input (analogas reference).

Analog / Digital relative timing scaledepicting two signals out of time.

The scale of the analog/digital relativetiming display has two pointers, onefor lines of difference, the second formicroseconds of difference. When thetwo sources are out of time, thepointers change color (yellow lessthan 1 µs; green exactly in time, and
