The Grand Domestic Revolution:

• an alternative to the limiting qualities of traditional housing

• eschews disaffection of Postfordism in favour of support through communication, counseling, and assistance

• freedom to both interact with a community of peers and enjoy repose in personal space

• high quality of life with freedom from restrictions

• maintains workers’ connections to community and a skilled background to build potential for a better future

How can the production of housing open up new potential, rather than locking them up in Victorian

homes or shutting them down in the mean conformity of today’s condominium housing?

Sunridge rbc: a net-zero bank for the future

Page 9: Victoria Ngai - Selected Works

The design of the Sunridge RBC bank aggressively pursues net zero energy and efficient water usage. Existing site and environmental conditions as well as sustainable technologies form a network of systems working together to passively provide for building functions. In addition, careful attention to comfort, aesthetics, and program, including a lively Discovery Zone, enriches the banking experience. The Sunridge RBC is much more than a bank – it is a platform to bring sustainable building practices to the forefront.

22 GLEBE: A DOMESTIC EXPERIMENT

• Radically alter the program of an existing space in a home, using only domestic materials, tools and techniques.

• Create a more affordable, generous, sustainable, welcoming, and communicative space.

• Design an event to engage guests and exercise the possibilities of the new space.

Plan (Before Intervention)

Page 13: Victoria Ngai - Selected Works

• A canopy of fragile leaves strung to form a substantial, sheltering canopy that alters the experience and perception of the space.

• An exercise in the rituals of food preparation and eating: participants each chop a fraction of the communal meal to be assembled.

• Unity of participants mirrors assembly of leaves into an architectural element.• Temporality, suspension, surfaces & dimensions, coalescence.
