VICE-COUNTY DISTRIBUTION OF IRISH

LICHENS

M.R.D. Seaward

ABSTRACT

A new census catalogue of Irish lichens, based on vice-county distribution, enumerates 1050 lichen taxa (including four subspecies, thirteen varieties and two forms) and 25 taxa of lichenicolous fungi and non-lichenised fungi. A significant proportion of the vice-county distributional data assembled is derived from earlier records, the present status of which has not been determined. An appendix lists 31 taxa omitted from the census catalogue; although many of these are based on published records which have proved erroneous, a few, if confirmed, will be additional to the Irish lichen flora.

M.R.D. Seaward, INTRODUCTION Department of Environmental Science,

Considerable lichenological activity in Ireland University of Bradford, 1 1

Bradford BD7 1DPR over recent years has resulted in the need to UK. produce an entirely new census catalogue only ten

years after publication of the previous one (Seaward 1984). Field meetings held by the British Lichen Society in Sligo and Connemara (Alexander et al. 1989) and in Mayo, Donegal, Antrim and Down, extensive fieldwork by B.J. Coppins, A.M. O'Dare,

H. Fox, P.M. McCarthy, A. Fryday, R.W. Alexan der, R. Woods and the author, detailed site surveys in connection with air quality studies by D.H.S.

Richardson and colleagues of Trinity College, Dublin, and herbarium studies at Belfast (BFT), Dublin (DBN), Galway (GALW) and the Natural History Museum, London (BM), mainly by B.J. Coppins, H. Fox and the author, have very con siderably extended our ecological and biogeog raphical knowledge of these fascinating organisms. In addition, the recent publication of The lichenflora of Great Britain and Ireland (Purvis et al. 1992) has necessitated significant changes in nomenclature;

furthermore, the status of many taxa based on old records has been questioned.

Almost all published material containing Irish lichen records has been critically analysed in the production of this census catalogue: those published works cited in the comprehensive bibliographies covering the period 1568 to 1989 by Mitchell (1971), Hawksworth and Seaward (1977), and

McCarthy and Mitchell (1992) have been ex amined; numerous published works (e.g. Clerc and

Diederich 1991; Coppins et al. 1992; Egea and

Received 26 January Torrente 1993; Henssen and Jorgensen 1990; 1994. Read 9 May Knoph 1990; Laundon 1992a; 1992b; Orange 1994. Published 4 1991; 1993; Santesson 1992; S6rusiaux 1993) and

October 1994. unpublished reports since 1989 have also been

consulted. First published records of Irish lichens up to 1990 are provided by Mitchell (1993).

As a consequence of all the above activities, 147 taxa have been added to the Irish lichen flora and 56 taxa removed since 1984 on the basis of re-examination of herbarium material, doubt cast on records not substantiated by herbarium material, or taxonomic changes which have subsumed taxa; no new additions to the previous census catalogue (Seaward 1984) have been added through revisions

by Purvis et al. (1992), although a few taxa have been elevated or reduced in taxonomic rank.

The following catalogue, based on vice-county distnrbution (Fig. 1; see also Praeger 1901; Webb 1980), contains a significant proportion of data denrved from earlier records (mainly nineteenth century), the present status of which has not been determined a few species are almost certainly extinct. The number of taxa recorded from each vice-county is summansed in Table 1. On the basis of taxa recorded per unit area (which, of course, excludes climatic and other ecological considera tions), the best recorded vice-counties are Dublin,

Carlow and West Galway, and the most under recorded are Monaghan, Roscommon and Tyrone (cf Seaward 1984, 3). However, a more realistic

picture of the status of lichen recording can be gauged from the ratio of the number of taxa recorded/log area (Fig. 2), which reveals that West

Galway, South Kerry and Down are best recorded, and that Monaghan, Cavan and Meath are most in need of attention.

As of March 1994, the Irish lichen flora can be summansed as follows: 1050 lichen taxa (1029 species, four subspecies, thirteen varieties and three

forms) have been recorded from Ireland over the

past 300 years, of which less than 10% of the taxa are based on old records; some of these taxa can be

presumed extinct since they have not been seen for over a century.

The figure of 1050 is reasonably representative of lichen biodiversity in Ireland when compared with the 1566 taxa known to occur in both Bnrtain and Ireland (Purvis et al. 1993). However, an analysis of post-1960 lichen recording in Ireland on a 10km x 10km grid basis reveals that while 64.8% of the 1008 squares have received attention, only 145 squares (14.4%) have more than 100 records, indicating that Ireland offers considerable scope for lichenological fieldwork.

The current state of post-1960 lichen recording in Ireland can be gauged from Fig. 3, which illustrates in three categories those 10km x 10km

grid squares from which (a) more than 100, (b) 99 to 6, and (c) less than 6 taxa have been recorded since 1960. The data upon which this map has been based are held in the British Lichen Society's Distribution Maps Scheme Computer Database housed at the University of Bradford.

CENSUS CATALOGUE

Nomenclature mainly follows Purvis et al. 1993; numbers in squared parentheses after vice-county numbers refer to the notes following the census catalogue. The 25 taxa indicated by an asterisk (*) are lichenicolous fungi and non-lichenised fungi

which are traditionally treated by lichenologists and usually overlooked by mycologists; they have been included in the calculations used to summarise the level of vice-county recording (Table 1) but omit ted from the calculations used above to summarise the Irish lichen flora.

recorded per 10km x 10km grid square in Ireland up to

March 1994. This map, generated directly firom the British

Lichen Society's computer database at the University of

(of 1008 possible) grid squares. Of these, 145 have over

100 records, 181 have 50-100 records and 326 have less

than 50 records. Overall, 64.8% of Ireland has received
