DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH

There are plenty of acts around today that have the Internet to thank for their success and Alex Care is one of them, but Alex isn’t a YouTube sensation or a product of MySpace he actually owes his mainstream success to an advert for Internet Explorer 9 for which his song ‘Too Close’ featured in. Last year ‘Too Close’ peaked at number 4 in the UK charts and earnt Alex his first chart success. Alex’s voice places him firmly within the rock genre but collaborations with other Reading & Leeds acts ‘Sub Focus’ and ‘Major Lazer’ could see his set on this years NME/Radio 1 stage exploring elements of dance and drum and bass. He may be new to Reading and Leeds but this is an act that you definately do not want to miss!

After a string of failed albums and numerous line-up changes, this indie four-piece rock band from Las Vegas have now hit the big time. With millions of hits clocked up on YouTube, a successful album and a nomination for ‘Best Rock Video’ at MTV’s video music awards, they have nothing but a bright future to look forward to. Their music has a raw, emotional and gritty feel, likened to the music of rock band Muse; with whom they pulled out of touring with because of other arrangements. The band whose hits include ‘It’s Time’ and “Radioactive’ will play the Radio 1/NME stage at this years Reading & Leeds festivals. Guitarist Wayne Sermon says that “UK festivals are legendary in America”, so let’s prove him right!

DIAMONDS IN THE ROUGH THE HIDDEN GEMS IN OUR L INE-UP

Led by frontman Dan Smith; Bastille has been compared by NME to firm Reading & Leeds favourite ‘Two Door Cinema Club’. Hype began surrounding the four piece band after they were signed by EMI music in 2011, their success really became apparent when their fourth single ‘Pompeii’ stormed the UK charts in February 2012 at number 2, this subsequently placed their debut album ‘Bad Blood’ at the top of the UK chart a week later to which they reacted ‘chart success feels like a joke’. Not complete strangers to the Reading & Leeds festivals; Bastille performed last year on the Festival Republic stage and will be back this year to play to an even bigger crowd on our Radio 1/NME stage.

With a backlog of material spanning nearly a decade it’s easy to see why some herald Sub Focus (Nick Douwma) as one of the masters of Drum and Bass. His self-titled debut album was released in 2009 and tracks such as ‘Time Warp’ and ‘Could this Be Real’ became a huge sucess within the UK dance scene. Sub Focus is a Reading & Leeds favourite and has rocked the crowd here before in previous years, this year we see the return of Sub Focus and we have our fingers crossed that he’ll preview some of the unreleased material from his new album. Another ‘One To Watch’ artist ‘Alex Care’ features on Sub Focus’s new single “Endorphins’, could there be a surprise appearance on stage?

BRING THE HORIZONBack with new album 'Sempiternal'

and playing Reading and Leeds!

ME

We’re excited to say that British metalcore boys, Bring Me the Horizon are back, and not only with a groundbreaking new album but to play Reading and Leeds festivals this summer! Bring me The Horizon have built up a loyal following over the years and in light of their recent release their fan base has exploded more than ever. ‘Sempiternal’ is the fourth studio album from the once little Sheffield band, with diverse influences including electronic music and pop as well as some melodic vibes also, they’ve certainly come a long way since their debut ‘Count your blessings’. Lead singer Oliver Sykes, also the founder of the ever popular clothing company ‘Drop Dead’, changes up his sound on the album. Known for his recognisable screamo voice, Sykes proves that he actually can sing, something people have doubted.

Singles ‘’Shadow Moses’’ and ‘’Sleepwalking’’ are sure to cause an uproar of excitement in a festival crowd, we can almost hear the screams of ‘This is Sempiternal!’ ringing in the air now. From the hardcore fans, to the new fans, to those who are sitting on the fence, we’re sure that everyone will be convinced, this band are known for putting on an energy fuelled show, they’ve played Reading and Leeds before and smashed it and this time round it’s going to

be even better!

FALL

OUT

BOY

Back with new album 'SAVE ROCK AND ROLL’! After a four year hiatus, Fall Out Boy are making a comeback and Reading and Leeds festivals are set to be their big return to the UK. They were very much missed, with a pop punk sound and a cinematic style, the band from Illinois have created some of the catchiest songs in the alternative scene. The band have five albums under their belt and the latest addition is very different from their once labelled

‘emo’ albums in early years. The last album they realeased before their hiatus ‘Folie A Deux’ was met with mixed reviews, critics labelled it conventional and not daring enough, but ‘Save rock and roll’ defintely makes up for it! Although it’s not exactly the old Fall Out Boy that fans wanted back, its exciting, it’s passionate and features a range of guest vocals from Courtney Love to Elton John. The album has

an essence of ‘rock musical’ with plenty of big ballads and fist-pumping tunes that will encourage festival sing a longs, and of course the band will create an essence of nostalgia with old hits. We expect a big crowd and huge reaction to their long awaited comeback!

COMEBACKS

Page 12: VIBES Magazine

This defaced dance duo have taken the charts by storm since their arrival onto the UK dance scene back in 2012, not short of industry contacts they have toured the country with the likes of SBTRKT and Hot Chip and have paired up on tracks with other artists such as Eliza Doolittle (You & Me), AlunaGeorge (White Noise) and more notably Sam Smith (Latch), for which their track stayed within the UK top 40 for 15 weeks.

The brother’s from Surrey have a garage/electric sound to their music and often remix other artists tracks, the most popular

being that of ‘Running’ by Jessie Ware, an artist with whom they share the same label. The duo has had constant support from BBC Radio1, which has meant many of their songs have dominated radio airtime over the last few months.

The guys have real genuine and raw talent; a feat that is rare these days amongst a genre that has started to become swamped with manufactured material, theywill be releasing their debut album ‘Settle’ in June, which makes the likelihood of them playing new tracks for you guys inevitable.

ONES TO WATCH

JAKE BUGG

Jake Bugg’s age certainly doesn’t reflect the experience he has had on stage and at 19 years old he is on his way to bigger and better places. Jake’s big break came after he performed on the BBC introducing stage at Glastonbury 2011, from which he bagged himself a record contract with Mercury.

In 2012 Jake’s self-titled debut album went straight to number 1 and was certified Platinum, despite his continued success Jake still remains modest and having received award nominations from the BRITS, NME and Ivor Novello he is still the down to earth boy from Nottingham with the quirky voice.

Jake’s ambition to pursue a music career came after hearing Don Mclean’s ‘Vincent (Starry, Starry Night)’ on an episode of The Simpsons and at 16 he chose to quit college to write and perform songs influenced by artists such as Johnny Cash, Jimi Hendrix and The Beatles.

Jake is a wonder to watch and it’s extraordinary to hear such an eclectic voice coming from someone so young, he is a welcome addition to our line-up and you’d be stupid to miss his performance on our Radio 1/ NME stage.

and one of the most successful rappers of all time, Eminem, real name Marshall Mather’s, was fired into the spotlight in 1999 after his album The Slim Shady LP went multiplatinum and

won two Grammy’s. This was just the beginning and now Eminem has a total of seven studio albums and thirteen Grammy’s under his belt and it seems that he has no intention of slowing down anytime soon. Eminem appeared at T in the park in 2010

and then went on to headline V festival in 2011. This year however he couldn’t resist returning to us and performing for all you new faces who missed his set back in 2001, except now as headliner he will be joining the long list of musical legends

that have graced our main stage in the past. We are certain his exclusive UK festival appearance at Reading and Leeds 2013 will be truly unique experience and one to remember. Eminem has a catalogue of music spanning over two

decades and we at the Reading and Leeds HQ are buzzing in anticipation to watch him perform such hits as, ‘Lose Yourself’, ‘Stan’ and ‘Without Me’. In 2012 Shady Records announced that Eminem was working on his eighth studio album and

that it is due to be released sometime this year, this makes the possibility of Eminem performing new content for you highly likely; definitely one to watch out for. So Crack a Bottle, Just Lose It and Sing For Your Moment at Reading and Leeds.

T aking one of the coveted headline slots are Scottish boys Biffy Clyro. In

2010 the rock band gave an impressive performance third down from the headline slot proving them worthy to jump up a few places.

hitting the big time

Biffy Clyro have a total of 6 studio albums, their last 3 albums ‘Puzzle’, ‘Only Revolutions’ and ‘Opposites’ have increased their popularity greatly and they now have an extremely large following. Songs that you won’t want to miss live are ‘Mountains’ ‘That Golden Rule’ and ‘Many of Horror’, each one of them huge festival sing-a -longs that have all reached the UK top 10 singles chart, so even if you think you don’t know the words, you probably will! With ‘Opposites’ having only been released in January of this year there are plenty of new belters which have yet to be showcased to a festival crowd, the set list is sure to be a varied mix. The band have been nominated for and won a variety of awards in the past including

‘Best song’ and ‘Best live band’ and being nominated for ’Best British band’ at the Brit awards in 2011 shows just how much their fame has exploded. There will be people who doubt whether Biffy really should be headlining but if you’ve seen them live you’ll know that they definitely deserve it, with awesome guitar riffs, plenty of well known songs and incredible amounts of energy they put on a fantastic show.

SIMON NEIL: “Reading always felt like such an exotic festival. Even though it’s been around since the ‘70s, it just really seemed to come alive in the ‘90s. I think that’s when it became the cultural moment that it is now, and the fixture that it is in the calendar. It’s just fucking bizarre that we’re headlining. I still can’t get my head round it.”

SThis is their 26th year of being a band and Green Day are back to headline one of the most popular and longest running music festivals in existence. The punk rock trio have still got it, with 11 studio albums including ‘Uno’, ‘Dos’ and ‘Tre’, released as a three part sequence in 2012. This album brought them back to their roots, sounding reminiscent of the old Green Day. Consisting of lead singer and guitar player Billie Joe Armstrong, backing singer and bassist Mike Dirnt and drummer Tre Cool, Green Day are one of the most popular and biggest selling rock bands in the world and they have most certainly worked

hard to get where they are today. ‘Kerplunk!’ the bands second studio album was the one that got them noticed, the success of it got them signed to major label ‘Reprise Records’, and the rest is history! Of course this is not the first time that R&L favourites Green Day have graced the stage as headliners, 2004 saw them take the slot right before the release of their number one, groundbreaking rock opera album, ‘American Idiot’. The album has won a variety of awards, including a Grammy and has even been made into a Broadway musical. In September 2012 the band announced that Billie Joe was in rehab, seeking help for

his substance abuse problem, he admitted that his on-going battle with alcoholism and prescription pill use had returned after a year of being sober. TV appearances and concert dates for 2012 and the start of 2013 were cancelled, and fans became worried for the lead singer as the band had just made their big comeback. In late December the band decided that they were ready to tour again, in 2013 Billie Joe announced that he was getting better every day, thanking fans for all of their support. Green Day are back, stronger than ever and ready to headline Reading and Leeds! One muddy morning in

2012, Reading festival saw Green Day do a surprise set in the NME tent, giving a few lucky ones a sneak peek of what’s in store. The band out played their set which only shows that they have so much more to give and with well known classics from older albums such as ‘Dookie’ and ‘Warning’ they are definitely going to please the crowd. Green Day are a band known for bringing fans on stage and interacting with the crowd as much as possible, so be prepared for a two hour set with an electric atmosphere.

“Volunteering at Reading festival was a rewarding experience. I had been to the

festival a couple of times and had an amazing time but working there added an interesting twist to

the weekend. I chose to work there to see another side of the festival that I had never really thought about

before, I met loads of people and found it to be a very different and eye opening experience. The best part had to be the appreciation that total strangers give you when you help them with whatever they need. I worked in the disabled area doing night shifts, so as you can imagine, I always had to prepare for any challenge. However this is why it turned out to be such a good experience

because I got to see all the bands I want in the day and helpm people who need it most at

night.” - Ben Whelan
