Larry Lawal Echoing Green Semi- Finalist Arthur J. Tipton, Ph.D. is President and CEO of Southern Research Institute. He has worked in the pharmaceutical and biotech industry for 25 years, participating in the growth aspects of three startups. The firm he founded in 2005 as a Southern Research spinout was acquired by SurModics in 2007 and by Evonik in 2011. At Evonik, Tipton was Senior VP of the Birmingham Division and head of global drug delivery. Prior to that, he served as Durect’s COO and Senior VP of biodegradable systems, VP of Southern BioSystems, President of Birmingham Polymers, and Manager of Polymer Science at Atrix Laboratories. Tipton serves on the boards of the Controlled Release Society, Birmingham Venture Club, Economic Development Partnership of Alabama Foundation, and Biotech Association of Alabama. He is an advisor to the Biomedical Engineering Department and School of Business at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. A CRS, National Academy of Inventors and American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers fellow and recipient of CRS’s Distinguished Service Award, Tipton has 32 issued U.S. patents, 26 published U.S. patent applications, and numerous foreign equivalents. He earned a Ph.D. in Polymer Science and Engineering from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a B.S. in Chemistry from Spring Hill College.
