Some of our clients:DUBLIN AIRPORT (IRELAND)Not only is Dublin Airport Ireland’s busiest airport it is also amongst the ten busiest airports in Europe. Dublin Airport manages an average of 60,000 passengers per day, rising to 80,000 during the peak season.

Due to the size of the buildings Ventilux were asked to install our Netcom5XP addressable testing system.

Netcom 5XP (Page 70) can monitor over 25,000 luminaires from one central location (PC or Laptop). This installation resulted in considerable savings for Dublin Airport as it substantially reduced the labour costs associated with Emergency Lighting Testing.

AVIVA STADIUM (IRELAND)The Aviva Stadium is a sports stadium located in Dublin, Ireland, with a capacity for over 50,000 spectators. It is commonly known asLansdowne Road.

The original multi discipline ground was in existence at the Lansdowne Road site since 1872. In its old incarnation, prior to closure inDecember 2006, it was the oldest rugby union ground worldwide & the oldest sports stadium in Europe.

Due to the size of the site and also the numbers of spectators the venue would welcome on match day or for a concert, Ventilux StaticInverters were installed to reduce the power consumption costs associated with self contained fittings.

LIVERPOOL ONE DEVELOPMENT (ENGLAND)Liverpool One was a major new development in the heart of Liverpool city centre. It comprised of 30 major new buildings including 2department stores, banks, hotels, restaurants and luxury residential accommodation in 42 acres between Liverpool City Centre andthe Albert Dock.

In what is believed to be the largest emergency lighting installation in Europe with centralised monitoring and testing facilities, Ventiluxsupplied emergency luminaires, central battery systems and a central test and monitoring system.

COCA-COLA ENTERPRISES (ENGLAND)In Kent, England Coca-Cola Enterprises produce small plastic bottles, recyclable glass and cans across a variety of products includingSchweppes Cordial, Roses, 5 Alive, Ki-Ora and the Coke Contour bottle. Built in 1961, the plant now produces over 800 million drinksevery year.

As part of a major cost saving project, Ventilux managed the installation of a Static Inverter System to power over 500 LED luminaires including signage and open area luminaires.

Coca Cola chose over 500 ‘Halo LED’ luminaires to dramatically reduce the power consumption on site. The ‘HALO LED’ also gave ourclient 10 times the lamp life of their previous installation, resulting in huge immediate and long term cost savings.

INTERCONTINENTAL HOTEL DOHA (QATAR)The Intercontinental Hotel in Doha Qatar is a beautifully designed building incorporating nine floors, five of which house the 400 rooms.One of the floors has a choice of 3 restaurants and a buffet restaurant. The basement hosts a 150sqm Gymnasium, sauna, jacuzzi, andsteam room. Outside there is a swimming pool and a pool bar.

Ventilux Limited supplied our GLADE and FOCAL products on this project as the Hotel wanted a discrete yet stylish Emergency Lightinginstallation.

ABU DHABI NATIONAL OIL COMPANY (ABU DHABI)A.D.N.O.C. is the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. The project consisted of supplying between 25 and 75 Petrol Stations throughoutAbu Dhabi over 3 years. All fittings were supplied the same throughout the installations to maintain a corporate image. Ventilux decided with the customer that the Weatherlux and the Stylux fittings were the most suitable. The Stylux Range was chosen forits durability and aesthetic appearance, whilst the Weatherlux was chosen for its vandal resistance and IP rating.

Cost Saving FeaturesLED- LIGHT EMITTING DIODE

The operational life of the Ventilux LED'sused in our products is 50,000 hours.This equates to approximately five anda half years continuous operation. Thisis in stark contrast to the expected life ofa conventional 8 watt fluorescent lamp,which is approximately 5,000 hours.

With fluorescent lamps, the true cost ofthe lamp is the cost of replacement lampplus the labour expense and timeneeded to replace them - which can beconsiderable.

These costs are significant factors withever increasing operational costs, espe-cially where there are a large number ofinstalled luminaires.

Another key strength of the Ventilux LED range is the reduced power consumption of the LED emergency module. The LED modulecharges the Ni-Mh battery typically at 15- 25% power consumption compared to a conventional Ni-Cd charger.

300 SERIESA conventional 8 watt escape route luminaire will give approximately 80-90 lumens (light output) in Emergencycondition.

With Cree LED's, Ventilux can offer up to an impressive 300 lumens in Emergency! Therefore in certain appli-cations instead of installing 4 bulkheads for example, you would only need 1 of our 300 Series luminaires!

This provides our customers with fantastic initial and long term cost savings. As you can imagine, installing less fittings, replacingless batteries and extending lamp life will lead to significant savings.Just look for the 300 Series logo in our product guide for this cost saving feature.

KEEP IT GREENIn addition to the cost savings the Ventilux LED product range offers, the product range also offers the client anenvironmentally friendly emergency lighting solution.

Nickel-metal hydride (Ni-Mh) batteries are commonly considered to have lower environmental impact than con-ventional nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd) batteries, due to the absence of toxic cadmium, LED's have a further environ-mental advantage in that they contain no environmentally hazardous mercury, unlike fluorescent lamps.

VENTILUX AUTO-TEST MODULEThe Ventilux Auto-Test feature is a stand-alone integral testing solution for small tomedium size installations.

The Auto-Test module is able to perform a test sequence and report the health of thebattery, lamp or charger via a Tri-Colour LED.

Pre-programmed to the testing requirements of EN50172 the Auto-Test module offers acost competitive solution and peace of mind where automated testing is concerned.

VENTILUX MICROWAVE SENSORThe Ventilux Microwave Sensor is ideally suited to commercial applications such as shops and offices, in areas where lighting can be left on. It is alsosuitable for store room, toilet applications or any other room where lighting may accidentally be left turned on.

The Ventilux Microwave Sensor uses ultra-high frequency radio waves known as microwaves, and the principle of the Doppler Effect to detect motion. The MicrowaveSensor will stay on as long as it detects movement within its range of sensitivity.

HOW DOES IT WORK?The Microwave Sensor sends out radio waves that bounce off nearbysurfaces and return to the sensor. Motion in the area changes the speedof the waves returning to the sensor. The sensor detects the change andinterprets it as occupancy. This causes the sensor to turn ON the lumi-naire.

High frequency radio waves can penetrate certain materials, therefore the microwave sensor can be installed behind a luminaire diffuser and therefore offer a big advantage over conventional PIR switcheswhich require a line of sight to function correctly.

WILL I SAVE MONEY?The energy savings will be extremely high with a very short payback with this small compact and easyto install module. With a range of up to 10 meters, multi units can be used in offices and corridors to reduce long term operational costs. Just imagine the high costs of leaving luminaires on 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Why not integrate a Ventilux Movement Sensor and start saving money today!

OPTIC LED SURFACE MOUNTEDThe Optic Surface Mounted LED is specifically designed to complement the Optic LED range and offers a cohesiveescape route and open plan emergency lighting solution for applications where recessing into the ceiling is not anoption. Customers have found stair cores, in particular, an area where recessing is just not possible.

The OPTIC LED SURFACE MOUNTED version is a cost effective and environmentally friendly solution to this problem.(Page 17)

SCOUT LEDPurpose designed for interior use, the Scout LED luminaire houses a unique’ swivel and rotate system, which allowsindependent positioning of the projectors, giving the installer more flexibility on installation.

The 6 WATT CREE LED'S once again offer reduced power consumption compared to the standard 20 or 55wattTungsten Halogen lamp. (Page 54)

EYECON LEDThe Eyecon LED is a discrete and unobtrusive LED Escape Route and Open Plan Emergency Lighting solution. TheEyecon LED offers an even lower power consumption than a 3 Watt, consuming just 1 Watt.

SIRIUS LEDBy functioning as both a mains and emergency LED driver, the Sirius LED luminaire provides an environmentally friendly, long life and economically viable alternative to a traditional fluorescent 16, 28 and 38watt luminaire.

WHAT IS NETCOM5 XP?Netcom5 XP is a new approach to automatic testing of emergency lightinginstallations. Compatible with both self-contained and central battery systems, it has become one of the market leaders in the field of automatedtesting of emergency lighting installations.

The testing system functions on an ethernet backbone and can be easily integrated into an existing Local Area Network (LAN).

HOW DOES NETCOM5 XP WORK?Each intelligent luminaire has at its core a stand-alone intelligent testing module (referred to as the “node”), whichtests the functionality of the luminaire before reporting back to a central control panel via a localised control module.

The node communicates with the control module via a proprietary CAN (Controller Area Network) protocol and thecontrol module communicates to the control panel via industry standard ETHERNET.

WHAT IS A NODE?The node is a stand-alone module which can be integrated into any emergency luminaire. Each intelligent luminaire has a network LED (yellow) to indicate network status and a charging LED (green) toindicate mains present and that the battery is chargingcorrectly.

The testing system functions independently and is electrically isolated from the emergency lighting installation, so there is no need for the control panelto be on-line continuously or supported by a UPS.

HOW MANY NODES CAN I HAVE ON A SYSTEM?The modular structure of the N5XP system allows thesystem to be scaled to suit any installation from 100 upto 25,300 luminaires. The modular structure also allows for simplistic later expansion of the system.

The use of the ETHERNET backbone allows fittings to be over 2000 metres away from the control panel using fibreoptic cabling and also allows for remote monitoring.

CAN I GROUP MY TESTING?The system allows for 30 independent test groups to be allocated irrespective of the physical location or the electrical circuit allocation, offering flexibility to the end user.

Placement of LuminairesDesigners’ Information

PLACEMENT OF LUMINAIRESIS3217 and BS5266 provide detailed guidance on where luminaires shall be installed and what minimum levels of illuminanceshall be achieved on the escape routes and in open plan areas. It also specifies what the minimum period of emergency durationshall be after failure of the normal mains lighting.

DETERMINE THE POSITIONING OF EMERGENCY LIGHTING LUMINAIRESThe first priority is to determine luminaires to illuminate the “Points of Emphasis”

FIRE SAFETY SIGNSFire Safety Signs should comply with the requirements of the Signs Directive, unless beingused to extend an existing installation when they may be the same format as those previously installed if complying to BS5499 Pt1(UK). The viewing distance of any exit signshould be 200 times the height of the panel if internally illuminated or 100 times the heightof the panel is externally illuminated. The sign should also be positioned between 2.5 to3.0 metres from the floor to optimise viewing.

AREAS OF PARTICULAR RISKAlthough they cannot form part of the defined escape route, the following areas are also deemed necessary to have emergencylighting because of the particular risk they present.

DETERMINING LEVELS OF ILLUMINANCEa) Emergency Escape Routes. For escape routes up to 2m in width, the horizontal illuminance on the floor along the centre lineof an escape route shall not be less than 1 lux and the central band consisting of not less than half the width of the route shall beilluminated to a minimum of 50% of that value.b) Open (Anti-Panic) Areas, For open areas having a floor area greater 60m2 (known as Open Plan or Anti-Panic areas) whereno fixed escape route is defined, the requirement is for a minimum of 0.5 lux anywhere on the floor, excluding 0.5m borderaround the room.c) High Risk Task Areas, High Risk Task Areas require at least 10% of the normal mains lighting level or a minimum of 15 lux, tobe provided within 0.5 seconds of failure of the supply.

LUMINAIRE SPACING DATAVerified performance data, including the maximum spacing of luminaires at particular ceiling heights is provided for all Ventiluxluminaires. The data is presented in the form of spacing tables similar to the example shown below. In addition this data is availablein DIALUX format - please contact the sales office for further details.

Luminaires on escape routes should be sited so as not to exceed the maximum spacing distances determined from the table forthe particular ceiling height. Light output from signs shall not be considered unless verified photometric data is available. Duringrisk assessment of luminaire positioning, it should be noted that luminaire performance will be adversely affected by the buildup of dirt and inadequate maintenance. Existing luminaries should be checked to ensure lamps and lighting controllers are clean,undamaged and that the lamp is not blackened.

INTRODUCTION TO RISK ASSESSMENTAn Emergency Lighting Risk assessment is deemed necessary in premises where people are employed to satisfy the requirementsof the Fire Precautions Regulations. The basic risk to be assessed is that in the event of a fire there is adequate means of escape.During a fire condition, the mains lighting is likely to fail, so emergency lighting should be provided to facilitate escape.

Emergency Lighting is one of the life safety systems required to be provided, where necessary, in all places of work. The requirementfor emergency lighting, its type and location are defined through the risk assessment.

THE NEED FOR EMERGENCY LIGHTING RISK ASSESSMENTFor premises in which 6 or more persons are employed. there is a legal requirement to document and retain significant findings ofthe risk assessment and measures proposed to deal with them. If less than 5 persons are employed, there is still a requirement tocarry out a risk assessment, although it may not need to be formally recorded.

EMERGENCY LIGHTING RISK ASSESSMENTIn order to determine whether an emergency lighting installation meets the requirements of all current legislation an assessment ismade of the compliance of the installation with current standards and codes of practice. Installations of emergency lighting and signsare deemed to comply with the requirements of the Fire Precautions Regulations if installed in accordance with the governing or national standards controlling emergency lighting, for example IS3217 in Ireland and BS5266 in the UK.

REDUCING THE RISK USING ENGINEERING SOLUTIONSMany situations in premises increase the risk of fire and threaten the escape route for people in these situations. There may besimple ways to reduce that risk, for example:

A If the incoming mains electrical supply is not in an area of low risk, then staff may be exposed to risk from lighting failure and emergency lighting should be provided to reduce that risk.

B If the lighting final circuits do not correspond with the fire compartmentation, then the non-maintained emergency lighting may not operate when required, and maintained emergency lighting should be used to reduce that risk.

C If elderly, disabled or partially sighted people are likely to be in the building, they may obstruct the escape routes and higher emergency illuminance of at least 1 Lux* should be provided so that they can see more easily and so that others can help them escape.

D If there are potential obstructions on the escape route, then BS5266 and IS3217 advise that they should be lit in colour against a contrasting background. This contrast may not be appropriate, therefore higher emergency illuminance of at least 1 Lux* can be installed to reduce the risk due to obstructions.

E If there is likely to be a presence of high physical risk, then a further increase in emergency illuminance and a rapid response time will reduce that risk.

F If there is the possibility of arson, then intruder and fire detection and alarm systems in addition to appropriate emergency lighting will reduce that risk.

G If the length of the escape route is excessive, then the emergency lighting and signage should be assessed. Higherilluminance or repeat signage may reduce the escape time.

H If people such as the public or temporary workers unfamiliar with the layout of the building are likely to be present then high illuminance or more signs may be required.

I If the escape route passes through open areas, emergency lighting and signage should be installed.

J If an area is larger than 60m, emergency lighting and signage should be installed.

K If 5 or more people are employed in the premises, emergency lighting should be provided by an installation of fixed luminaires which are automatically switched on upon failure of normal lighting.
