Benefiting the Neighborhood Youth Association’s Las Doradas Children’s Center
East of Lincoln Boulevard lies a Venice land of large lots and gardens, with homes built, rebuilt, salvaged, and designed by artists,
architects and Venice patriots. A place more private than its west-of-Lincoln kin, a little more secret—and, yet, as embodied in the work of one Gregory Ain, it is a setting, literally, for historic architecture.
This year, the Venice Garden & Home Tour is honored to share with you five homes located in the Ain designed Mar Vista Tract. The collection of fifty-two houses was built in the 1940s, and is now protected by historic preservation.
Ain’s mentors, Richard Neutra and Rudolph Schindler, were better known, but Ain brought the ideas of modernism to the replicated production homes of Mar Vista. Like many modernists of the time, Ain’s politics leaned left; he designed for the “common people.” But Ain’s architecture is far from common.
Laid out in the Ain homes before you, you’ll discover fluid spaces that connect the world inside with the environment beyond in a stunningly effective yet deceivingly simple way. To walk through the structures is to stand in the recent, still vibrant ancestors of the many homes designed--and making magazine covers--today.
Ain’s evocation of indoor-outdoor expanses and adaptable spaces coupled with his belief in the power of the communal are still key to Venice lives. For decades, those values have flourished.
More than anything, the Venice Garden & Home Tour shares that lifestyle. Once a year, Venetians and friends-from-points-beyond gather ideas to incorporate in their own homes. These visions are often delivered through improvisation, tenacity and simple materials—meaning, available for use by the “common people.”
While the homes you see today are set in Venice, their promise of possibilities is available to anyone who chooses to end the day inspired!

THE CAUSE When you enrich your life with an inspiring garden walk, you also enrich the lives of the low-income children of
Venice. Over the past nineteen years, the Venice Garden & Home Tour has raised over $1 million for Venice children, with funding supporting the Las Doradas Children’s Center and its programs. Operated by the nonprofit Neighborhood Youth Association (NYA), founded in 1906, the Las Doradas
Children’s Center of Venice is the focal point of NYA’s innovative educational enhancement program, Personal
Best. With an emphasis on education, social development and cultural enrichment, NYA provides group and individual instruction to help youth – ages three through high school – succeed in school and achieve their personal and vocational
goals. Donations are tax-deductible. NYA is a 501(C) (3) nonprofit social service agency.
