15 December 2017 Dear Members of the Xavier College Community A Jesuit education is, has been, and always will be focused on whole person education: mind, spirit, and body. Jesuit education accomplishes this through cura personalis (care for the whole person across all of their dimensions) and through a holistic curriculum. Jesuit education aims to form life-long learners imbued with an Ignatian approach to living shaped by the knowledge, understanding and use of the interplay of experience, reflection and action. Jesuit education also aims to graduate students who possess the desire and the personal resources to be men and women for and with others. The graduating Class of 2017 have demonstrated the essence of what we aspire our graduates to be as compassionate, conscientious, competent and committed men. Therefore, it is with great privilege that I announce the academic achievements of the Class of 2017. Annually, more than 98% of our Year 12 students move to Higher Education and so we use the Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) rather than individual study scores as our means of ranking. The Dux of Xavier College is awarded to the student who achieves the highest ATAR, with the highest possible ATAR score of 99.95. This year we congratulate Daniel Crowley and Michael Culvenor who have both attained an ATAR of 99.9 and are named as Xavier College Duces for 2017. We congratulate Daniel and Michael on their extraordinary achievement and we wish them every success as they embark on the next stage of their lives. Nicholas Chan (99.85) is the recipient of the Ob Insigne Meritum Award, awarded in recognition of his similarly outstanding academic accomplishment in 2017. Xavier College is an academically inclusive school and we celebrate the abilities of all of our students across a range of subject areas. In addition to these top achievers, the Class of 2017 were well represented at high ranks on the ATAR scale: 9 students (3.83%) attained an ATAR of more than 99 (top 1% of the State) 41 students (17.45%) attained an ATAR of more than 95 (top 5% of the State) 75 students (31.91%) attained an ATAR of more than 90 (top 10% of the State) 130 students (55.32%) attained an ATAR of more than 80 (top 20% of the State). The median ATAR for 2017 is 82.25. This means that 50% of our students scored in the top 17.75% of the State. The median study score was 33 with 15% of study scores above 40. 2017 has seen an increase in the percentage of students who have achieved in the top 5% of the State with ATARS higher than 95, as well as students who achieved ATARS of more than 80. We also had an increase in students achieving study scores over 40. As an academically inclusive school, there is much to be proud of with this achievement. Perfect study scores of 50 were achieved in Australian History, English, Legal Studies, Mathematical Methods and Texts & Traditions.
