But however results pan out inthe huge variety of eventstaking place, today promisesto be the biggest and I amsure the best Varsity contestyet.˚

I congratulate the organisersand the participants — on andoff the field — for ensuring thatwe have an event that is agreat celebration for theuniversity communities ofHuddersfield and Bradford.

Today is a sports fanÕs dream.The University of Huddersfieldalone has upwards of 600students taking part in 14different sports divided into23 separate events.˚ There aremore sports than ever — withAmerican football and tennis,plus mixed hockey and mixedbadminton making theirdebuts.

Each and every one of thosehundreds of players — fromHuddersfield and Bradford —will feel passionately proud tobe representing theiruniversity.˚ They all want towin, but there wonÕt be anysore losers — unless they wereon the wrong end of a heavytackle!

There will be a little bit ofpoignancy.˚ Today will be thelast time that many of theparticipants — soon tograduate — represent theiruniversities and I know thatthey will be taking homememories of the great timesthey had as members of theiruni sports clubs.˚ Participationin the annual Varsitycompetition will be the mostvivid of those memories.
